Motorcycles pads 'dragging' on rotor, not a problem (well, probably not)

The question of "I hear the pads skimming/dragging on my rotors even when I'm coasting or pushing my bike. What's wrong?!" Keeps appearing in various fora.
Given that everything is working correctly the pads will always be skimming the rotor. There is no mechanical mechanism that pull the pads away in most cases. The pistons do pull in a tiny bit when pressure is removed as the seals, that were deformed when under pressure, return to normal.
Some high end calipers do have magnets in the pistons to try to keep the pads in contact with the pistons. If the pads stay on the pistons, the can benefit a hair from that seal deformation pulling the pistons back into the caliper body.
Do make sure you brakes are well maintained:
- Dirty pistons can stick and cause excessive rubbing and heat
- Likewise dirty guide pins or springs can cause a pad to catch and hang, rubbing too much and possibly overheating the brakes. Hanging pads can also wear unevenly.
- There is a minimum of lever free-play needed - don't mistake it for "slack". There is a required amount of free-play needed for correct operation
- Flush your brakes annually or more often if you ride hard and/or live in a very humid region
- Inspect lines, especially rubber ones regularly. Rubber ones degrade with age and exposure. They will start to crack and bulge (under pressure). This can reduce brake power early on, and eventually lead to leaks or outright failure
- Make sure your front wheel and calipers are installed properly. There really is a right and wrong to these items. Check out Dave Moss for the down and dirty on these items.
Here's a recently published synopsis of brake care that I mention: • How to Service Your Br...

    thanks for this video. im 26 years old, and have worked in professional automotive repair since i was 18. even with my very lengthy experience with disc/drum brakes and anything else you could think of, this noise would still bother me when i would roll my new bike into the garage. of course, owning it for 4 months and just been too damn lazy to investigate. Looked thru the calipers, are the pads low or grinding? Nope its good. Haha....probably should have taken a minute to look closer. seeing your bike also do it and the quick explanation is appreciated.

    I pulled the pistons out cleaned, lubed with brake fluid and put back in, sliding pins cleaned and greased. I’ve gone from dirt bike trim to supermoto trim using larger 320mm brake disc and using a brake caliper adapter to suit the larger disc. Riding around I can hear it at low speed and after riding for 10 minutes and checking the temp of the disc it’s not hot so that’s a good thing.

    First of all thank you very much!!! Very helpful to know the pads will touch a bit, had me going crazy. I cleaned the calipers and all and still only get a 1/2 rotation when I spin the front wheel. And looking at your video I can clearly see the air valve at 9pm, you pushed the wheel and it stopped at 3pm, so half of rotation. That's exactly what I get. Good to know that is OK. Yes with calipers removed the front wheel spins for days.

    A sign that your brakes are bled well..... if concerned about the "drag" issue, on bikes that have a wheel speed sensor, usually if the gap between it and the sensor plate is outta spec it's a sign your bearings are side-loaded from being not fully seated during installation. This can cause braking issues. Food for thought.

    WARNING!! I almost died tonight. I installed Probrake Tec2 levers on my new ZH2. They did not drill the hydraulic plunger holes on the steel cylinders deep enought, so when I installed the brake lever, it had too much "Preload" or "Prebrake" pressure and my pads were constantly rubbing. I forgot to spin the wheel to make sure it was rolling smoothly (like this video). I went out for a test ride and noticed the bike wouldn't accelerate as fast as usual. I was on the highway at 85mph and the front brakes instantly locked up and came to a screeching halt in the middle of the highway while traffic was swerving around me. I was almost struck about 20 times at 80mph. I could not move the bike off the freeway until the brakes cooled (10 minutes stuck in the middle of 90mph traffic). BE VERY CAREFUL that you are only getting very SLIGHT rubbing when you spin your wheel, especially when you install new brake levers. If you have to push your brake levers on too hard, they are probably rubbing your pads, and they will overheat and lock up. Locking up your front brake at 85mph on the highway, will likely cause you to wreck or be struck and killed.

  • @DCMonster

    @DCMonster

    So this is bit different that what I'm talking about in my vid - but an important thing to cover, since I've seen it happen many times, and was guilty of it. Any brake lever will have an engineered amount of freeplay that it *must* have. This will be listed in places like a factory service manual, but are usually a couple mm of travel at the lever end. This freeplay is critical, as it ensures that the fluid return to the reservoir is not occluded or fully blocked. If you have too little freeplay (what you're calling too much preload) there's no place for the fluid to escape to, when hit heats and expands. That expansion pushed out the pistons, which makes more heat... repeat until you have that lock up you mention. So - it is quite possible to have everything be fine in the calipers etc, but if you mis-install a lever, or "Take out the slack" of the lever, below a critical threshold you can generate that lock up scenario

The rubbing is way better than before but I still have this drag. The wheel doesn’t spin freely at all. According to this video that’s normal. When I’m riding I hear the rubbing. It’s not right. I took the calipers off and inspected the pad seatings and took the pins out and cleaned and lubed them. Still rubbing. Next I’m going to clean the pistons and if that doesn’t work I’m going to a shop and seeing what they say. I have a Honda vtx1800. My father has same and his never did this. It’s beyond aggravating.

    Actually, the two main reasons for brake drag is either your caliper isn't aligned properly or your rotor is slightly bent or possibly both. You might want to look into it before just dismissing it. It's worth a look, no?

  • @DCMonster

    @DCMonster

    10 ай бұрын

    While I appreciate your concern, neither are the case here. I'd honed these rotors recently and check for true on a sheet of glass. A bend or warp makes a periodic noise and on this bike I'd have seen hot spots. As far as the calipers, they are properly installed for radial mounts. Bolts on finger tight, brakes pumped up and then held to the bar, then torqued to spec. Now, folks need to make sure things are in good repair, as I've commented before. But assuming things are good, you're going to still see some pad drag

  • @franksaxton3583
    @franksaxton3583 Жыл бұрын

    I respectfully have to disagree with your conclusion. Pad to rotor drag and a scuffing noise when rotating the wheel may be "normal" but it is not a good situation. Pistons should retract enough to allow a visible gap between the pads and the rotor. If not, you will be wearing material off of the brake pads while just riding down the road. You'll notice a considerable amount of brake dust on the wheel and you'll find yourself replacing brake pads much more often. I'm a Harley guy and the MoCo is noted for doing everything on the cheap. The high end brake system on your motorcycle should be a good performer. If you have a Harley maybe not so much. Floating piston designs require regular cleanings and inspections of the mounting pins. Ditto for the pistons which should be cleaned thoroughly on every brake pd change. Also clean the pad guide pins and rails. Keep all of that well lubricated with silicone high temp grease designed for brakes. And obviously check and clean the rotors now and then. If you remove the caliper and there is still drag and a scuffing noise when rotating the wheel you most likely have a wheel bearing problem.

    Surely this will reduce the performance, increase gas consumption and slow down a low powered bike, in effect you have a binding brake.

  • @DCMonster

    No, you just have a one object, the pad, making light contact with another, the rotor. When there's zero pressure in the hydraulic system there's no direct force acting on the caliper pistons, and then pad in turn. So they just happen to skim the rotor since there's no mechanism to positively pull the pads away from the rotor. By contrasts, with drum and shoes - there is a mechanism, generally springs, to pull the shoes away from the drum in the absence of a user input. With a properly maintained rotor and caliper set up, you'd have more force acting on the rotor from a pad if you were to lay it all out perpendicular to the ground and set the pad on the rotor. At least then there's the force of gravity acting on the pad against the rotor. While that skimming may have a measurable force to it, it is tiny and of little consequence in the real world. A binding brake is a very different issue

    Then something’s wrong. Some light drag is normal. Light enough that you won’t notice when rolling the bike by hand. If you feel resistance when pushing the bike from the brakes, like they are lightly applied, something needs to be addressed immediately. Lots of drag like that can cause your brakes to generate a lot of heat which could lead to failure or locking up

If the wheel on a motorcycle would spin freely, you would get better mileage, better performance, and so on... so what´s the deal with this mechanism on a motorcycle? Thanks!

  • @DCMonster

    It's not, so you need to investigate some more. I had a noise on a bike that happened 1x per wheel rotation, in a very specific section of the rotation. In that case, it was just some surface rust on case iron rotors that formed where the pads sat when parked. Once I figured out the source, 30 seconds with a scotch bright pad resolved that, no biggy But an irregular noise is worth investigation

    I do? Thanks.. there's way worse folks t5in the world to sound like than Superman/The Witcher. Regarding your brakes - there is a proper way to install a front wheel, and a lot of folks do get some part of it wrong. Dave Moss has a couple videos that detail installing a front wheel properly. If you have radial brakes there's an extra step or two to ensure minimum pad drag. And as always - do ensure your brakes are clean and function properly. Overly dirty brakes can bind in spots resulting in excessive pad drag.

  • @DCMonster

    @DCMonster

    2 ай бұрын

    Yeah. That’s how brakes work. You’re using friction to convert the kinetic energy of the bike to heat. Energy doesn’t just vanish. Rotor, when the bikes ridden hard can get very hot. Like hot enough to burn bare skin. That’s why fresh, high quality brake fluid is important for track or race applications, as some of that heat will transfer to the caliper and then fluid. Now, brakes that are poorly maintained and dragging can generate a lot of heat, even in the most mundane riding conditions/ use. So that’s why proper care, maintenance and/or installation of brake components is important

    Thank you for this video mine sounds like this after replacing the brake caliper pistons, piston seals, dust seals, and clips/ springs. I bought new brake pads and discs and installed new braided hose lines. I filled with brake fluid and bled them until there was no air bubbles. It makes this noise when I spin the wheel. When I'm pushing the bike around there is a similar noise. Is this normal?

    I often wondered if it was normal. To me, it's about time someone invented a better braking system. The pads should clear the rotors. The are wearing out all the while you are driving.

  • @KTJ_46
    @KTJ_46 Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the reassurance. A question though, as new brake pads wear out with use and they become thinner, will the noise decrease, since the gap between the rotors and pads has increased or there is a mechanism to keep it the same at all times?

  • @DCMonster

    @DCMonster

    Жыл бұрын

    The noise should stay the same. As the pads wear down, the pistons will extend more, and the level in your fluid reservoir will lower. That additional fluid moving from the reservoir to the fluid column that action on the pistons is the mechanism that keeps it the same

    i can hear my front and i think only left brake is squealing when i push my bike around when the bike is off (because i cant hear it when its on) and i doubt its okay because when ive been out riding i notice my left disc is warmer. my brake lever also engages pretty damn late and engages at full strength when the lever touches my handlebar when i have the lever at its shortest setting. do you have any idea? cus im looking around and am unable to find any issue like mine. my reservoir is not above max so i doubt its too much fluid in the system.

  • @DCMonster

    @DCMonster

    Based on what you said - I'd suggest you inspect and clean your calipers 1st. And inspect the pads for uneven wear as part of that. If you have dirty pistons, they won't move evenly during operation. In a worst case, the gunk can cause a piston to stick as I mention and that can lead to *excessive* rubbing which could be that source of heat. Next - it sounds like you need to flush the brake fluid. This is a basic maintenance item that should be perfomed annually or more often "my brake lever also engages pretty damn late and engages at full strength when the lever touches my handlebar when i have the lever at its shortest setting. " Not quite sure what you meant there. Brakes in good order should apply progressively. Asin a littler lever pull = little brake force. Medium pull = medium force. If there's nothing nothing nothing, then really hard brakes... that's a bad and dangerous set up. And one last thing to be familiar with properly installing a front wheel and calipers. Dave Moss has detailed videos on both areas

    My bike keeps failing it's MOT for "Noisy front bearings" I've replaced the bearings and there's zero noise with the caliper off. I'm pretty sure the mechanic is failing me because he thinks the skimming brakes are the bearings.

    What would it mean if only certain part of the rotor makes the skimming noise? I noticed while spinning my rear tire, where the exact same skimming noise is happening but only certain part of the rotor. Rotor looks fine and brake pad is only 2 month old.

    If it one spot/area that makes a noise, and it's that same exact spot on each rotation - that's likely a bit of a warp in the rotor.

  • @DCMonster

    Caliper? If the disc is rubbing on the caliper you have some big issues you need to address and it’s not the same as pad rub. Properly assembled, the rotor will only contact the pads and not the caliper body. So one could pull the pads, but leave the calipers mounted and there would be no contact If you’re correct that the rotor is rubbing on the caliper, you have some fixing to do
