Motorcycle Windshield vs NO Windshield

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The difference between a motorcycle with a windshield vs a motorcycle without a windshield. I know when I was in the market to buy a new motorcycle that this information wasn't really available so I planned on making this video for a while.

@@GearsGadgets okay I just went and watched the whole thing & yeah I 100% agree with you. I was saying if you were to have a different take then what you did, only then would you most likely be a psychopath lol. But yeah we pretty much had the same exact reaction when hitting that interstate, for me it wasnt that the wind was too strong, it was more of me being tempted to let go just go like I'm Jax Teller just so I could get warm again by lol. But I had no idea how much it actually affected the ride until I took mine off the other day because I love the way it looks without the windshield but boy that interstate is a different animal without ol Windy on there to protect us. I see no negative side to the windshield & I'm in Arkansas so when it's hot it don't matter that windshield ain't going to do much to change the temperature, that humidity ain't no joke

I rode for years without a windshield until I finally tried one...just the reduction in road debris had me sold...& the wind redirection is awesome too...the more relaxed you can be, the better the ride will be...but you also need the right windshield for you & the bike you're riding too, one size windshield doesn't fit all...

For me, it's aesthetics. Cruisers looks so much better without the windshield. I keep mine on in the winter, but take it off in summer.

I agree with your assessment. I took mine off my Honda VTX 1800 for a day and promptly reinstalled it. North of 80 mph riding requires more hand grip and ab tension. It handles better but doesn't go well with the upright seating position. I found myself moving my feet to the back pegs to properly hold on at faster speeds. 😆

Great vid man, I recently switched from a cruiser to a sports bike and I love using the bike with the wind screen removed but highway long distances suck. I installed it back on but I angle it way back to reduce the wind buffeting. Even a small one seems like it will work.

Appreciate the video, rode with the guys yesterday on my Street Scrambler, they all have bigger bikes with windscreens, I got hammered when we were on the highway, I mean to the point where it was a little scary, getting a second bike in August, it'll defenitely have better wind protection for the days I know I'm going on long rides.

Sweet video bro. I agree 100%. I’ve rode my Vstar 650 without its windshield a few times and as you said, at lower speeds it’s nice to have that “full effect” of the wind against you but most of my driving is a 35-40 minute commute to work going 70mph and that force can become tiresome to work against at times. I’ve had those “real bikers” tell me how much cooler the bike looks without it and I’d agree but how much fun does riding become if your working at it more than necessary. Isn’t that why we all buy bikes? For the enjoyment and fun of riding. Again great content 👍🏻. Stay safe bro 🤙🏻😎

The standard windscreen on my Suzuki 200cc was a wind-cannon torture device; it took all the wind at 60mph and funneled it, like a firehose, right to my face. I finally took it off and fell in love with the bike all over again. Also, on such a light bike, that big windscreen was like a sail on a hobie cat sailboat, and felt really unsafe in strong crosswinds and gusts.

I rode for decades without a WS. Got a bike with one, and WHAT A DIFFERENCE. The costs of a little affect on the steering (sometimes), the looks, (subjective), and whatever else, are far outweighed (for me) by the comfort and protection they offer. Good video.

I have come here today as I'm about to take my Heritage from Ireland to Spain and it's warm there. The only reason I'm debating leaving it at home is the buffeting in the helmet. But I've a couple of hours riding motorways and can take my team. I think I'll keep it on as the road debris is an issue with an open face helmet . Thanks. Same bike as yours and I do love it off riding around home.

I agree with all points you made, including the machismo "real biker" comments. I feel the same way. Riding for 55 years. Nothing to prove. Also, you nailed it on the speed need too. Over 60, 65mph, you really start noticing the wind resistance. At 80mph, it's a hang-on. 70 and below, not that bad.

Great topic. I completely agree. I bought a Road King because I like the ability to remove it. Most of my riding is on country backroads where the speeds rarely exceed 70 mph and even then, not for long stretches. If I am going to be on an interstate though, the windshield goes on. I have some mild arthritis in my knuckles and at interstate speeds, even doing a perpetual crunch to keep my hands as light as I can on the bars, all the joints in my fingers start aching in short order. One thing I do in hotter weather is pour a bottle of water on my tee shirt. I wear a perforated jacket and as it evaporates, I get air conditioning, regardless of the outside temp...until it dries off anyway. I just bought a new windscreen with a vent in it. My hope is that it'll flow enough air next summer that I don't even need to take it off.

i have a '79 Sportster, and 70-80mph means I have to crouch; I'm also constantly wriggling the handgrips back on, so a screen would definitely help on the motorways. The weather's invariably awful in England as well. Looks wise, one of my earliest influences was Eddie in the Rock Horror Picture Show, and his WLA had a screen, so screens are cool.

Tinnitus makes me think twice about windshields. Surprisingly I have less noise to my helmet without a windshield. So I prefer to take the wind to my body rather than helmet. I took my Triumph Long Haul Windshield off my T120 Bonneville. The last decent windshield I ever had was on a BMW R1200RT, but who wants to ride those all their life... Windshields and helmets are a personal choice, very difficult to generalise and learnt through long experience. Thanks for helping us think about some of the issues. Cheers.

So. Tx p.o.v. I just got my wind shield about 2 weeks ago. I'll tell u at 95+ degree weather wearing a mesh motorcycle jacket I found myself drenched in sweat. The lack of air flow was not good. I dislike the buffeting on the helmet. I thought it was worse than not having a windshield. Now I do recommend it for the winter months and longer (more than 60 miles) road trips. Other than that the shield came off and placed back in the box. Even though the air at 95+ degree weather is hot, when ur sweating it feels good and still cools u down as compared to no air flow with the wind shield.

Pushes on your head so bad, your exhausted by the end of a ride. A nice feature of my Indian Roadmaster and my Victory Vision, the windshields are power adjustable. Up to 60 I enjoy it without the windscreen. Beyond that I do not think its worth it. I feel like I have less control over the bike and its just uncomfortable. It is not uncommon for my rides to exceed 75 going all the way up to 100 due to traffic flow. I'd rather not feel like I'm hanging on. That's just me though. A tip that works for me, I avoid to ride/drive behind a truck (when possible), they lose up a tons of debris due to winds or vibration or bumps in the road add to that hey can transport rubbish and they end up most of the time in the construction sites, so their tires are full of all kinds of the small debris just waiting for that high speed on highway to find it is next victim... On the motorcycle, if I'm stuck behind a truck outside the city in small roads, I stop on the side (when possible) for a minute let few cars pass me and then ride behind them, cars have much more protection not the riders.

But my wife has a 48 special and it's much cleaner air. Not that I would want to ride it on a long trip? But she has done 200 mile days on it a few times and she seems ok with it! I will stick to my road glide!

I have a question! I am very tall 6’4’’ and i am getting such violent buffeting on 1 gen vstrom with the stock windscreen that it makes me think about quitting riding. Were talking headaches, blurry vision and spinniness. I read online that buying a big aftermarket windscreen does not solve the problem for some tall riders, and they are expensive as hell. I never had this problem while i was learning to ride, all school bikes were naked with no screen bikes. I started having issues as soon as i bought the vstrom. So im thinking why not just remove all that “protection”? If its wind pressure versus straight up throwing up or fainting from violent head dribbling im getting i’d go with the first one..I would be very greatful if anyone gives me some feedback on the subject! :)

I have been experimenting with a wind screen on my HD Roadster, and I'm finding that I'm simply happier without it at all. The buffeting that the wind screen causes is so uncomfortable and loud that the ride becomes unenjoyable. And the only advantage I can see is to keep the cold off my upper body, if I can stand the wind buffeting. But for now, in the summer months, I'm going with no windshield at all. In the fall, however, I'll start experimenting again to possibly extend my riding season here in north east PA.. good luck and I hope you find what works best for you.

@@GearsGadgets, The wind-blast on a Softail is outright absurd. It’s almost as though the factory went out of its way to make sure that extra wind is able to make its way upward towards your noggin, trying to take it off at speeds above 40-45mph. Speeds of 60-70-80? ...hell, it’s like Hurricane forces blasting by, seriously compromising your hearing even though ya’ got the best earplugs on the market in... Way worse than, let’s say a Yamaha Road Star. So I must conclude that aerodynamics on a motorcycle seem to be a black art. However, if you want to ride with a ¾ or even a half lid, I HIGHLY recommend installing a lower shield (or cutting down the OEM one a few inches) and then installing those so called “fangs” or lowers that Harley sells in chrome (can just powder coat them gloss black to match the ride). I did buy a pair for a Twinkie after reading volumes about them on various H-D forums to give them a try. Result? Absolutely astonishingly positive. It’s literally as though you could light a cigar or put on a baseball cap - visor forward - and ride at 70 without issues. With a half helmet (borderline “DOT” lid) there is virtually zero, and I mean ZERO lift from windblast coming up from below, which is the big culprit, as you might already know. The looks department for windshield and fangs? Major downer to be sure in my opinion. I don’t even like the aesthetic of just a shield by itself, nor the sorta’ negative connotation about the whole “real biker” deal that you touched on. There's a definite "geezer" vibe to a shield that cannot be escaped... However, that combo I’m describing above is the end-all of any wind related issues on a Softie. I’m not sure if they make ‘em yet for the M8’s but I know that guys on the forums have elongated the mounting holes, etc., to fit on the ’18 and up Softails. Hell, I had to jerry-rigg a pair to fit that friend’s 88 inch Deluxe, too. For whatever it’s worth, Ride Forever!

I think fairings and windshields allow you to ride at a higher average speed on the highway. everyone I ride with has a windshield or fairing and 80 Is about the average speed when we're on the highway usually several hundred miles a day. so, unless I wanna feel beat down when we get where were going, I'm gonna need that windscreen. like you said, 60 and below is no problem at all without wind protection. some friends I know road from VA to CA and back on Bonnevilles and a Honda shadow with zero wind protection, but, they stuck to back roads almost exclusively and took weeks to do it (lower speed) so they were completely fine. on the flip side, some guys in my club are getting ready to run to cali and back, taking 5 days to do it, including partying in cali for 2 days. for that, your gonna need some wind protection. or your ass is gonna get beat the whole way lol

That's why you need a windshield. You don't need to drive really fast to have a windshield. You need it for safety.

The only brands that had a frame mounted headlight.guage cluster were Yamaha, Triumph and KTM....Triumph did such a crappy job engineering a way to MOUNT a "touring" windshield (they utterly failed or did not bother trying) KTM 1290 I was afraid of the brand otherwise they did that right which left me with MT-10 and their accessory windscreen. BMW probably has the BEST bike but they FAILED to offer a frame mounted place to mount a windscreen which means it is fork mounted "sail" Same with Honda CB1000.....both instantly off the bus

Good video. Multiple comments I would have. Sometimes it depends on a persons age. Young people want the 'cool' factor and no windshield. I've been riding from my teens and now age 66. My first two bikes had no windshield. But I wore helmets. And they were not heavy rock states like AZ. So I rarely if ever had a rock thrown up. And if I went fast, I tended to lean into the wind. More sporty. Now I use a windshield that is removable and I highly prefer a medium size one. No windshield and I feel like a become the windshield. Living in TX for many years now, a helmet optional state, I find I mostly don't wear one unless I go touring multi state. And I wouldn't want to do that without a windshield. If a rock flew up the windshield would deflect it. I also figure if speed is what a person is after, maybe the windshield would slow the bike down some. I have to assume so since I never saw a drag bike with a windshield. Also different size windshields will affect things. I have a larger size and I actual got more buffeting with it so I didn't like it as much. So I stick with the medium one.

What BOGGELS my mind is how manufactures have arbitrarly decided (other than Harley which is its own animal comparitively?) They decided they basically sell only 4 different styles of motorcycle 1. Naked 2. Cruiser 3.Adventure Bike and 4. Sportbike .....So anyone like me that wants a sporty motorcycle with good ergos and windprotection? THEY assume they will force me to buy an adventure bike whether it is what I want or not....and I hate the marketing guys guts for this! What I and many others WANT is a Sportbike with comfortable ergos....that is the motorcycle equivilent of a luxury sports car....but noooo I cant have that! Have to buy a "naked" bike and put a windscreen on it or try to and just live with naked looks....it really is maddening. A sportbike is typically a street legal race track bike sold at premium dollars....they are gorgeous beautiful torture racks no eductated non track riding older motorcyclist really wants to endure riding. The answer is so simple but they cant do it because IF they built naked bikes with optional sportbike bodywork? Aftermarket companies would sell clones of all the pieces....so instead they basically make sure the bikes are no condusive to such upgrades period....either payup and buy an uncomfortable silly sportbike? Or else pay even more for an ADV bike or cheap out and buy our naked bike....or if you are a wanna be Harley dude with no budget? then buy our cruiser...I hate em
