Motorcycle Tire Blowout On The Highway

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Well, it was bound to happen sometime, if you ride enough. First time ever, I had a hole bad enough that I couldn't at least get back home. This time is was a sudden 5-10 seconds-to-flat situation, on the freeway at speed. I knew what was happening and made it to the shoulder, then did everything I could do to at least get out of harms way. $400 later my day was shot, but got back on the road.

Good video. I was a highway patrol officer for over 30 years. We learned to never turn your back to traffic for good reason. It creeped me out watching. You have all kinds of traffic passing by you at high speed 20 ft away, and you have no idea which one might swerve SLIGHTLY right and take you out. At 70 mph those vehicles are travelling at over 100 ft/second. A driver's average perception/reaction time is 1.25 seconds. An impact would scatter you into a million pieces. Be safe out there!

Riding 15yrs now had my 1st blowout on 7/22/23 riding from from Philly to bear Delaware. It happen at 830pm. If you get a blowout on your bike 🏍️ unless you have a buddy with a pick up truck your screwed. I called roadside assistance for a tow 4am waited still no tow truck. So it seems like you said know one wants to tow motorcycles. The only way I got home was my buddy had to get a work truck and come pick me up 6am. What a night. Glad you got everything resolved.

You're actually pretty lucky! I had a front tire blowout 5 miles south of Douglas, Wyoming on Sunday, 9/11/22 while on a road trip coming out of Houston, Texas. It literally blew a chunk of rubber out that was 2" long by 1" wide. It sounded like a shotgun blast when the tire failed. I sat on the side of I-25 for 3 hours until a truck with trailer showed up. He then hauled me and my bike to Casper, Wyoming because there isn't a motorcycle shop in Douglas that works on metric motorcycles. Casper Mountain Motorsports picked up the bike 2 days later at the hotel and changed both front and back tires. Both tires were new and there was a defect in the front tire that caused the blowout. That one flaw could have easily killed me, as I was going 85mph on a 80 mph interstate. Thankfully, Continental Tires paid for everything (hotel, tow, replacement tires F & R, and replacement front fender that was destroyed as well) which came out to roughly $921.00.

Oh, man, I feel your pain! Similar thing happened to me once. One mid-August Sunday afternoon I had a rear tire exploded on the Florida Turnpike in Miami within 6 miles from home. Luckily to me I was riding in the rightmost lane and was able to hold the bike from going down. Had to wait for over an hour until a tow truck arrived to take me and my bike home for $120. In addition to the tube and tire I had to replace the rear fender that was destroyed by the tire shreds. Good luck and ride safe!

Started in Cleveland, Ohio and had a blowout (rear tire) in the absolute middle of nowhere in West Virginia (of all places). Broke down in a town of 100 people. Long story short - 6 hour process to get the new tire (closest dealer 2 hours away). Huge expense and never made my destination. I also carry a repair kit and compressor w/no luck. Riding 30 years this was the first time it happened to me as well. Glad you're back on the road !

That sucks man, but you walked away with no harm to the bike or you, which is main priority. Like you said, all you can do is be prepared best you can with supplies, and be cognizant of your surroundings like when your tire is losing air and your escape plan to get to the side of the road safely. I had a one axle trailer I borrowed from a friend not long ago on a trip to Big Bend Texas and blew a tire on the way down, on the freeway. Set me back 3 hours after changing spare, and getting to tire shop to find out tires were 10 years old. Replaced both and the spare. On the way back, 9pm at night, pitch black, my steering wheel all of sudden started to vibrate, I knew what just happened, another blow out. Thankfully I immediately pulled over, even though I couldn't see what was happening back there, that could of been a disaster had I been tuned out, and lost control of trailer. Come to find out, bearing seized, destroyed hub, etc, all from lack of maintenance and grease on bearings. Cost me an extra day, for indy shop to replace hub, wheel, hotel room etc. 600 in shop and hotel fees. I'll never borrow crap from anybody again, lol. But I walked away okay, and my bike on the trailer, miraculously wasn't destroyed. My gf told me to dump the trailer and go to Uhaul to rent one, right when first tire blew 10 minutes from house. Shoulda listened to her.

Happened to me at speed last year and sounded like a gun went off behind me. Yes, the day changes to lots of obstacles to overcome and the need for a few hundred in your pocket and on a solo trip from east coast to Cali caused me to spend the night in Amarillo. I couldn’t find a 24 hr motorcycle shop lol. That non hungry thing on Keto really helps out when things go wrong and you have long hours to wait for help to be available.

Had this happen to me once - caught a roofing nail in my rear tire on a highway off-ramp, but unlike your situation the nail stuck in the tire so it was easy to locate and repair with one sticky string and a foot-pump (highly recommended instead of a 12V pump). As much at these situations suck, it's good to see that modern motorcycle tires will stay on the rims during rapid deflation so the bikes can be steered safely to the side of the road. I've never heard of a true blowout happening with a modern tubeless motorcycle tire where the whole thing just comes off the rim and literally "blows up" like the old thin-walled tubed tires on Harley knuckleheads/panheads. Not to say it hasn't happened, I've just never heard of such a thing happening outside of a race track.

One week after I bought my R1, I was railing through the canyons going from bright sunlight to shade when I hit a small rock which split the front tire. As I slowed to a stop with the rear brake, steering became very difficult. What to do? 20 miles from home. No phone reception until the last 5 miles. If I leave the bike and hitch a ride, there's a good chance it will be gone before I get back. The bead had not come off the rim, so I started the bike and gingerly pulled away. At 15 mph the steering was controllable, so I decided to try it. It took over an hour, but the bead held. One of my nine lives?

Next morning called the only M/C Shop in this little town in North Carolina that was open until noon on Saturday. They said they had a tire for $158 but when I arrived it had jumped up to $ 258! But I had no choice. Then add another $ 100 for the install I was rolling again for $ 358 plus tax! So Now I will Never Leave on a Road trip without New Rubber!

This happened to me today on I-35 in Oklahoma, going about 75mph. I don't know if Oklahoma is the South but Fort Thunder Harley was about 5miles away. They sent a truck out to get me. Took about 15mins for them to arrive. They didn't charge me to haul it to the dealership and had a tire in stock. But I have spoked wheels so a tire tube and wheel wrap cost 358 dollars. The really suck ass thing is that flat Dunlop only had 780 miles on it. It was my first flat on a motorcycle. It wasn't as bad as I had previously thought it might be but it was the rear tire. I am certain a front tire flat at 80mph would have been a quite different experience.

At least you were on the highway Bryan, my last fast flat occurred on a road 300+km from home in the twisties with no phone reception for miles. Came out of a corner hard and the rear squatted too much I knew there was an issue, pulled up. I had an in-and-out puncture too, luckily two plugs on the tool did the trick enough to get me going again after 4 co2 canisters. I carry a pump now too. That same day a mate broke down with a dead stator after we got out of the forested areas. Long day. It's something that happens to anyone at any time, sure you missed out on a meet up but you kept it shiny side up and just a little lighter in the wallet. Thank goodness for small mercies.

Bad luck. Had a similar flat in North Palm Springs and was able to limp into the local powersports dealer for a new tire for the FJR. They were wonderful. However, a few days after returning home, I noticed a 1" x 4" vertical hole in the inner rear wheel fender. wth is that? Upon shining a flashlight on it, I could see something with threads. It was the offending debris, a 3" x 3/8" toggle bolt of some kind. ...heavy, with bent wire prongs. The tire had picked it up and thrown it through that inner fender. I, unknowingly, brought it home to be discovered later.

Oh my, I feel your pain brother! As a long term ADV rider, I have also had some... Entertaining... experiences in the South and so steer clear of it as of the last 12 years... One thing that I do with EVERY set of tires I put on my R1200GSA, after mount and balance, I let out the air and put the necessary amount of MultiSeal FlatOut (Sportsman Formula $15 on Amzn) front and rear and then seat the sealant in with an hour ride with twisties! I've tested this stuff in the last 4 sets of tires I've tested (Metzeler Karoo Streets, Karoo 3, Michelin Anakee Adventures, Shinko 805 and a Kenda Big Block Paver rear - Karoo Streets & Anakee Adventures, both were amazing on-road and OK off-road! BTW) - in every one of these tiress I ran this sealant that also hyper-balanced my tires, so smooth, even tested to buck-thirty the Karoo Streets and Anakee Adventures, the rest just shy of a buck... I ran about 11oz in rear and 8oz upfront - seemed about right - in the last 100k miles I picked up screws, thorns, nails and other - in every instance I had to inspect the tires in order to see the puncture because in all but one, I lost NO pressure - My GSA comes with tire pressure sensor so I saw a very slow pressure loss in the front in the middle of Nowhere - had plenty of time to get to my stop and plug with DynaPlug kit - officially, MultiSeal says not certified for cars or motorcycles but I can attest to the safe function of this Kevlar fiber-based sealant which I ALSO use in my van to reduce any possibility of puncture / blowout on the road... I used to use "Ride-On" but the stuff is stupidly expensive and, I think, not as good as FlatOut - you will only need ONE bottle per set of tires!... Here's the exact link on Amzn if you are interested: www.amazon.com/MULTI-SEAL-20130-Sportsman-Off-Road-Only/dp/B071QWCW42?ref_=ast_sto_dp - In any case, Safe Travels and Thanks for all you do!

The word taco comes from the Nahuatl word 'tlahco' which means "half or in the middle", referring to the way it is shaped. The true origin of the taco is not known but it is believed that it was created in pre-Hispanic Mexico.

I don't understand how the make of the bike's manufacturer (Harley makes all kinds of bikes and tires too) has anything to do with servicing your flat tire issue.
