Motorcycle Skills | Where should I look at the roundabout?

One issue that comes up regularly in CBT and DAS bike training is where should riders look when moving through roundabouts. In this video we are going to look at well timed and effective continued observations when moving through a variety of roundabouts and learn how to adapt our observations depending on the layout.

    Thanks for the video. I've completed CBT and Theory and currently riding around on my 125. Sometimes there seems to be a lot of steps in a very short distance, especially on the smaller roundabouts. Maybe my biggest concern at the moment from a practical perspective.

    Yes, that's a very understandable comment. For small roundabouts, particularly mini roundabouts, if you set the approach up correctly with OSM-PSL for left, ahead or right then you should good - there is generally no time for further lifesavers as you have most likely got through the roundabout by the time you have done them. It's the bigger roundabouts where there is the chance of someone in your blindspot trying to occupy the same space at the same time as you.

    hi was wondering do I need to do a theory test when I get my provisional for a moped. (im 16) im very confused on what steps to take

    Hi, no you do not require a theory certificate to apply for your licence or to complete a CBT. It is a requirement to read and understand the Highway Code.

    Hope this doesn’t confuse BUT why does most of this information go out the window when doing advanced training ie following Road Craft? that you could fail your test if you followed Road Craft rules on roundabouts. Great info and video 👍🏼

    This is a good question. We wouldn't say that when doing advanced training, that any earlier DVSA driving test skills or information goes out of the window but rather the rider is able to build upon an initial core skill set and then learn how to further adapt it as their knowledge and experience increases. As an example, on your DVSA test they like you to hold position 2 in lane for general progress down the road and not use a more extreme positioning. In the context of a new rider this is best, to keep them away from dangers near the white line (see this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/c2mf3LWrZKeaicY.html). In the context of a more experienced rider they can then appreciate and develop how to adapt this to the risk versus benefit profile of alternative positions.

    Would too much head checking be better than not enough head checking? Could you get marked down for doing too much head checking in mod 2?

    Thanks for the good question. Lifesaves need to be be effective (not just moving your head but taking information in to use) and well timed (not distracting from what is happening ahead, and not too late to be of no use). If you know why you need to lifesave then you will do them in the right situation. If you over do them you will risk getting caught out by something else happening ahead of you and that is what might result in a fault on your test.
