For twice the price of a replacement visor you can get a set of goggles with 2-4 times the clarity and probably 10% of the distortion and almost none of the reflection you get off the inside of your shield. Also, the off road world appears to know that gray (smoked) is a horrible color for seeing details in shadows. Some of us live in warm climates where that extra airflow is greatly appreciated - advantage goggles. Pissed off bee or hornet - advantage shield. Thanks for your work, I'm a bit of a fan.

Excellent video again. You just reminded me why I stopped using googles years ago. Peripheral vision. In the late 1980's when I first started riding, I used to have a 3/4 Bell 500 helmet and goggles. Then I switched over to a visor and have used it ever since. Nowadays I have become very interested in riding offroad and was thinking about getting a dual sport helmet with a pair of goggles but I think I'll stay with the helmet and visor instead.

Good points but the main focus point of our peripheral vision is only on the center. Everything else will still be blurred and unnoticed. The goggles will reduce peripheral but only like 5%. Not really 20.

  • @motorcycleadventures

So a big part of this vid is the fogging up. IF you do any riding offroad (I do both), once you hit trails and you start really working the bike and the track, you will sweat and fog up the visor. This is very annoying. Goggles dont fog up and with an open helmet you get much better cooling and airflow. Thats the difference.

MX goggles are the only way to keep fine dust/sand out of your eyes, when riding in such environments. Shields won't. Glasses won't either (even the kind with gaskets around your eyes) This is why dirt riders wear MX goggles exclusively and dirt helmets are designed around them. Airflow is nice, sure, but dust is the main reason. For any other purpose, I agree that they aren't ideal. Even off-road, I don't use MX goggles if I don't need them (trail riding alone in the boonies, damp ground, etc). In those cases I use safety glasses instead. IMO, when using a shield, it's a *very* good idea to wear glasses inside your helmet (if you don't wear prescription glasses, get safety glasses). This way you always have eye protection regardless of whether you're using the shield and/or sun shade. "Flying Eyes" are the best I've found, I can wear them all day without any hot-spots or headaches. If you are going to use goggles, I highly recommend Quick Straps. They're about $20 and make goggles WAY more convenient. Just make sure your helmet's shell is compatible with the mounting pads; my LS2 Adventure, for instance, is not.

I am happy that kept me from allowing our 13 year old daughter to get a cross helmet with goggles. Yes, she looked cool with it. But sitting behind her dad or me, it would have been more boring (and dangerous) for her, because she could see less. Myself, I am a happy visor user. Due to me wearing glasses, using goggles is a bit difficult anyways. Always have to pay attention to not drop them.
