    I have YZ250 2 stroke. Its fully ported, high compression ratio, fatty pipe, bored carb, well tuned, race tech suspension valving and springs...all the best stuff. Clutch shifting is just wrong, for so many reasons, including the bike balance and traction. I also spoke to 2 former Pro Supercross racers whom I ride with, and they have never heard of using the clutch for shifting. Dirt bike transmissions are built to not use the clutch - thats how they are designed. Use the clutch for traction control, but not shifting. To shift without the clutch, just "twitch" the throttle off for a micro second. This unloads the transmission and the bike will smoothly and effortlessly click into the next gear. Downshifting is done under braking thus the transmission is already unloaded. This "use the clutch for shifting rhetoric is just bad advice.

    Coming from street to dirt I always used the clutch to shift. Recently stopped using it and it is much easier and faster without using it. And as a technician you are correct it will not harm the transmission at all.

    When I try to downshift on my DRZ400SM without the clutch, there's a ton of force keeping me from pressing the shift lever. I could blip the throttle to get rid of that force, but that means adding throttle while trying to stop AKA it's slower. I use my brakes to stop the bike, not the engine. There's literally no advantage to downshifting without the clutch. When I was a beginner on quads, I wouldn't use the clutch to shift. People act like clutchless shifting is an advanced technique but it's natural for newbies. In reality you have no control over the rear tire speed when you just dump gears without the clutch. Slipping the clutch on downshifts to control rear wheel speed, is the advanced technique.

    @@atypical_moto perhaps for stopping or slowing down fast it best to use all 3. Pull in clutch n bang down a gear, now all at same time u slowly release clutch for engine braking AND u apply both brakes smoothly

    Yeah I found its good to use the clutch even a little bit its insurance of solid shift I have raced and not used it,but if the clutch is brand new,and your budget unlimited,ok,its good to always use a little just be safe,your fingers should be there anyway,I learned eventually when I got serious about racing.Believe I could go out and ride without it but you'll be smoother with it and smoother useally means faster.track conditions will vary too making clutch use more important than when traction and the track is just perfect...but those days are not all the time,thanks Gary...

    totally disagree about using clutch for upshift. A very slight release "twitch" of the throttle unloads gearbox and enables a smooth effortless upshift & its a quicker shift then pulling and releasing clutch lever. It also gives more consistant power to rear wheel thus keeping bike balanced. Clutch should be used as a traction control device on corner exit and off starts.

    Outside of more seat time, possibly look at moving your shift lever up one spline. This will give you a tad more room to get your toe under it.

    Clutches are so light nowadays that there’s really no reason not to always clutch shift...as someone who grew up riding big 70s Laverda triples and Ducati desmos with non-hydraulic clutch mechanisms I cannot understand why people don’t always use the lever. My DRZ400E clutch is a feather weight compared to old superbike clutches.

    When Gary talks recommends using the clutch while upshifting is he just offering this recommendation to four stroke riders or is this something he's recommending across the board for both two stroke and four stroke racers?

  • @Tj1056

    @Tj1056

    I would have to think he is backwards on his shifting idea... clutchless upshifts are perfectly fine on these bikes because of the kind of transmission they have but you can get damage from clutchless downshifting...

  • @Semics5

    It's across the board for both 2 and 4 strokes, especially 2 strokes. It takes more clutch, throttle and braking finesse to go fast on a 2 stroke.

    Tj1056 Thats what I was thinking because way back when I was on a 65, clutchless downshifts (now that i think about it) felt horrible because the bike was slowing down by just stomping the shifter and not smoothly feathering the clutch.

    I think you are riding flat-footed (hence the accidental shifting down after jumps) and that's your problem. Try riding at the balls of your feet, predict which gear you are going to be in for the next stretch and try to slip the clutch when you are slightly off the optimum gearing. Go over to Ryan Hughes channel for proper tips on MX riding.

    Sure sure.. IN the old days, i had a 91' CR250. I don't used the clutch for shift. Never blowed up. Never! Never had a problem.. This thing is depend on manufacturing quality. For example Honda make better quality than other manuf. in the 90's. My friend had Suzuki, TM, Yamaha, etc.. but none was so good like Honda's.. I believe today the other companies make better quality. At least i hope..

    This bloke has got the whole clutch thing the wrong way around, the dogs on the gears don't care about the clutch, what they care about is the torque on them that is pushing the male dog against the side of the female hole. If you back off the throttle so that you are on a trailing throttle with it just cracked open as you change gear then there is no side load on the dogs and it will change gear with ease. This is much harder to do on a downshift as the engine is acting as a brake (even a 2 stroke will do this) and the engine braking is placing side load on the dogs. If you change gear with load on the dogs the sharp square edges of the dog gets rounded off so they end up slipping past each other, when this happens the selector forks get bent which means that the dogs no longer fully overlap each other so they are even more likely to slip.
