Hi Gary, the heart wants what the heart wants! 3 of my bikes are aprilia's, and my next bike will probably be another aprilia. We all favour a particular brand or style. You go get a griso and enjoy it buddy 👍🙂

since having had a ducati monster with a snapped cylinder stud, ive never used stainless fasteners again, when they seize and snap its spark erosion at a machine shop not a BnD 2 speed drill

I was really shocked to see a automotive style clutch in a motorcycle! I would think that a clutch that size would be able to take a lot of abuse. Thanks for making this video because I was wondering what it would take to do a clutch on a Guzzi 85TT ... I'm looking at getting one.

Holy cow that is a huge flywheel for the size of the engine. I've seen 1600cc cars with flywheels that size and they weigh much more.

Really interesting, and really well narrated. Quick question, I notice you are using battery powered tools instead of air fed. Are air tools now a thing of the past in a modern garage, especially with how battery tools have so much torque now ?

Hi James, Cordless technology has paved the way through most trades and industries. I still have all my air tools. years ago air tools paved a way for safety & convenience in the motor trade, for one there were no traipsed electrical cables strewn across a workshop floor plus all electric power tools at the time had brushed motors. Brushed motors created small electric discharge out of the back of the tool with the potential risk of igniting oily rags, petrol fumes, etc. Thus air tools were much safer, plus the use of 'one' universal air line connector which fitted all your tools. Modern power tools are generally brushless with that added safety of no risk of that electric discharge, plus brushless motors out perform most 240v plug in and air tools. Cordless tools are made primarily out of plastic thus making them lighter than metal cased air tools. There is still a place for air, I have a compressor which runs everyday, we need air for adjusting tyre pressures, for an air blow gun, we use air chisels and impactors, an air de-scaler for when we weld, air for the plasma cutter, air die grinders, one of my bike ramps uses an air safety lock, we use air for our fuel/oil drainers, we use air to empty our oil drainers, our tyre machine is air driven, etc. It's used less but it's still there. Thanks for watching James and for your question

Did you measure the old clutch thickness? It looked OK, probably didn’t need replacing.

I did it this way as I felt holding the bike up somehow would be riskier than this way. I believe the tech data says remove the rear! Try it and video it for others if you can 👍

I'm in the middle of replacing my gearbox, how did you find fitting the circular plate that you originally left out. Kudos for admitting it by the way. Did you use the special tool?

  • @melsmotors

Hi Terry, thanks for watching. No real special tools were used on this job. Like I said in the video this clutch is very similar to an old 80s early 90s golf, I've done so many over the years that I just do what needs to be done without thinking much about it. We repair around 3500 vehicles per year and keeping up with what I've done is a challenge, I'll have to watch the video again to refresh my memory. 🤔

@@melsmotors Thanks Mel, I've just replaced the gearbox on my 1200 Sport. I'd tried fitting the circular plate the wrong way round, ie with the dome outwards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your video came up and I was able to rectify it with no issues. Doh. Many thanks for the effort you put into this, and I've watched Pt 3 with the sump studs nightmare!

What region are you in? I can't believe how much corrosion there is on all these bolts. Is that something normal with Moto Guzzi or is this odd. If Guzzi uses steel then that sure is a concern for someone like me looking to get one. This sure did turn into a snowball rolling down a hill project. Man, what a PITA! Could be worse.....could be water cooled. I thought my BMW K1200RS clutch/rear main seal was a booger.....YIKES!

It seemed pointless to decide to replace the clutch. Don't know what lead the customer to ask to replace the clutch, when it was unnecessary. Seems customer was facing some problem and he ( mistakenly ) thought it was the clutch that needed replacement. On Moto Guzzis, sometimes it can be clutch cable that needs adjustment or the throwout bearing that needs to be serviced/replaced..and not the clutch itself.

  • @melsmotors

This customer was going on a European trip, his dad's clutch had packed up previously on his Guzzi and he didn't want to have the same outcome. It's not for you or I to question or judge what a customer wants. He had his reasons and they were justified in his case. Plus if you'd worked on one of these, you'd realise that the clutch is hydraulic and not cable operated! Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂👍

@@melsmotors Totally makes sense why customer would have wanted it replaced. Agree, my bad for forgetting it is hydraulic on Grisso. Also, I am a bit surprised/curious about seized studs/bolts. Was this abnormal on this bike, since so many of them seized. Or is this something regular for this age on all bikes? Just curious. Thanks.
