Cheers for that, really useful, didn't realise how good the hue indoors was. I've never really compared them. I mainly use the hue + aquara ones, the hue outdoor is awesome too. I use it indoors in the office and garage because I find it the best, battery, connection (hue use good radios) , range etc. obv use it outdoors too. Aquara is awesome because you used to be able to get them for less than 5 quid a pop (around 5-6 dollars) so i've scattered them round the house and slowly replaced them with hue where I felt needed. They don't seem to like connecting to other routers that they weren't paired with though which is a big reason for swapping some to hue but the ones round the hub (phoscon/deconz) in the core of the house I have kept, depending on the model so ymmv. Cool off period on the aquara ones are a pain, I did hack some and lost one one the way due to my dodgy soldering, most of my light automations are over 2 mins tbh so it's not a massive issue but they can work, with phoscon you need to do an api call to set the cooldown below the default as every time it restarts it resets to default.

Great comparison video Travis. I have the Aqara in a spare bathroom. I know the long reset (cool down) is a pain, but it works great there with the added 2 min if needed delay in the automation. Plus no one gets stranded in there. My Iris MD'r in the garage has been there for about 6 months - no issues (eBay 2 for $17) Nobody touches the light switch so it's a BIG win!!!!

The Aqara P1 (newest version) can now adjust cooldowns, as well as adjust motion sensitivity. Pretty nice for the price.

I bought the Phillips Hue when they were on sale at Bunnings here in Australia. They work great both inside and outside (under the veranda). I mounted them high in the corners of rooms and stuck a small piece of plastic card below the lens to stop my cat triggering them. Great video by you and your little helpers (including the 4 legged one). Keem up the good work guys.

Great video. Subscribed. I really liked the demonstrations with the sensor detection overlayed. That was very helpful. I have one Philips Hue sensor and a couple of the Sonoff sensors. I noticed some weird stuff with the Sonoff but wasn't sure what was going on. Your video pointed me in the right direction so I know what to look for in the future. The Philips Hue is great, but, like you mentioned, the price... Mixing and matching depending on needs is a good recommendation. I'd suggest the Hue in "more important" areas and something cheaper in areas such as a garage or laundry room. Also, knowing the cool-down times will help when making automations such as turning lights off after motion has stopped.

I think I have 20 Phillips Hue. By 20 times and cry 20 times. 23 I guess. They work well and I can’t imagine how many times they have saved me flipping a switch. Using them with Zigbee2MQTT. Awesome combination.

I have 8 aqaras with the hardware mod done. It goes to clear after 5 sec and battery life is still very good. Almost 2 years now.

This looked to be one of your funner videos to do with your son. Just awesome. I think your next video should be about proper placement of motion sensors. I was ready to throw away some of my motion sensors just because I implemented them wrong. I've learned not to put them on the ceiling pointing down and always have an adjustable bracket to dial things in. Also not to point them at a heat vent. They trigger when the heater would come on

I am using cheap 443mhz sensors by DIGO bought from aliexpress. Detection is instant and cooldown is about 3 seconds. They are great.

Been using the Iris sensors and really like them but I'm thinking about replacing them with something that has a shorter cooldown time. Unfortunately it looks like the Hue is the only quicker one so I'll probably keep waiting for something else to come out or keep an eye out for a deal on the Hue sensors

Sorry, I don't, in Zigbee2MQTT it is just an entity and on the dashboard for the device.

The cool down time for the Aqara one can be lowered to 1 second through Zigbee2MQTT if needed. 90 sec is just the default value.

Not really. I tried that. That just makes Z2M report back quickly while the sensor is still in triggered mode. There is a new Aqara sensor with the dual batteries that allows this to be changed but it didn't do too well with my tests in the newer video.

The new P1 versions can be adjusted, as well as adjust the motion sensitivity. It’s slightly larger but has double the battery and is Zigbee 3.0 protocol.

I agree the Philips Cue is ex[pensive but it really is the best and most versatile with the the "cooldown" adjustable from just a second to hours via Zigbee/MQTT, the sensitivity is also adjustable (low, medium, high), it also does lux and temperature and the led can be enabled/disabled. I fought with other sensors and did what you suggest - use the Hue (I also use the outdoor Hue) and use cheaper ones where I don't need the additional features. IKEA do quite a good Zigbee motion sensor called the "TrRadfri" - It has time and sensitivy adjustment on little knobs hidden in the back but the "cooldown" is fixed. Hope this helps. I got a bunch of the wyse sensors, and was really frustrated when they started dying... So the timing of this video is great for me!

I use Third Reality sensors for lights and other automations and so far they work well. Great informative video.

I want to buy the third reality, i just have an alexa echo 4th gen, will it work? Or i have to buy another thing?

It's not wireless (needs 5v source) but my go-to is an 8266 + AM312 PIR. They're a mixed bag though. I have one that only works out to about 3ft 🤬 and another from the same pack that see's out past 40ft. BME280 is a nice addition to the package.

I thought about including it as I use those a LOT and battery life is great since there are no batteries. But it wouldn't have been fair as the class was different.

Thanks! I haven't seen any other than the YoLink motion sensor but that needs their hub.

i have a few aquara sensors and the sonoff sensor. the sonoff eats battery like hell, the original was dead after like 4 months and the second is showing 66% after 2 months. The Aquara ones work fine, but the temperature reporting is seriously off. may get some Lidl or Ikea sensor in the near future for comparison

I really liked the Wyze sensors that I got on your recommendation, but I think they end up being more expensive than something like Hue because I have had to replace them so often. I think I will try the Linkind sensor for motion, but what do you recommend for a reed sensor that I had hooked up to my mailbox door?

Besides the stupid branding on the side, the linkind door sensors work well and are pretty quick. These are also pretty good but have a delay sometimes by another second but for a mailbox is fine. ebay.us/P0vpgb Those Wyze sensors were so nice for the price but the whole bricking issue combined with them not made anymore kinda kills it now.

I'd love to see you mod the Aqara and do some more testing with it.

I’ve been using the IKEA Zigbee motion sensor and found it to be ok… (Conbee2 hub) Cool down period is way too long for my taste. Will probably be trying the Phillips as the cool down seemed to be the shortest one of all the ones tested here.

I have the Ikea Tradfri motion sensor set up in the garage in a test setup with ZHA. I find that the first time I walk into the garage for the day that I have to manually hit the Kasa light switch, but after that it works fine throughout the day. I haven't viewed the traces on that yet, though.

Nicely done - but your kiddo stole the show LOL I find that AGSHome one is hyper responsive when mounted on a ceiling (8'). I just use an Echo 4th Gen for a hub and it never has issues with connectivity.

Is this a new model maybe? I heard they were coming out with the cc2652 based ones but didn't see them hit the store yet.

Cool off period is essential, it's amazing that it's not a configurable setting. I started off with RF motion sensors and their cool off is sub 3 seconds; I don't like RF as my setup gets confused of more than one sensor is triggering at the same time (Hacked Sonoff hub) but none of the Zigbee sensors I've tried work for what I want. My shortest motion light I have is the overnight bathroom light that stays on only for 15 seconds unless retriggered (I use Node Red) - Does anyone know of a Zigbee motion sensor that has an adjustable one time and cool down? P.S Your son is a future superstar Travis.. 😃

He's a damn genius. I was wondering what was taking him so long and he goes I needed my sponge bob mask since we didn't have the big dog around to test it. Then I saw it didn't trigger was well with it on.

Love the review, thanks. Could you test the Shelly Motion, it looks good on paper and appears to be really flexible. I have had different motion sensors over the years and I haven't been impressed with any. The best ones I have found are the Philips Hue. My problem is with the cool down period, I always find myself in the dark! I have just started using Home Asistant so is there a way you could get round this cooldown period?

You could adjust the cooldown period, or just simply set a delay based on the first trigger and it keeps getting triggered anytime there is more movement.

I bought some Xiaomi sensors (not aqara) which are look almost the same as the aqara ones. I have the same issue with them as you had with the sonoff ones. I was working in the kitchen and suddenly it became dark even though i was moving in front of the sensor. Very annoying. Now i have to buy another sensors next to them because all of them glitches like this. Another issue with them is the effective range according to Xiaomi is about 7 meters but as far as i tested practically its about 3-4 meters at most only.

I tried using the Aqara sensor (non-LM one, without lux sensor). The cooldown is 70 seconds exactly, which is very long. The problem with it was that it was not checking for motion while triggered, and any motion within that window will not extend the cooldown. So if your motion took 69 seconds, then stopper for a couple of seconds and resumed, it will stop detecting motion immediately, and start again. Which is really bad if you are controlling your lights off of that. A hardware mod makes it check for motion even during the cooldown, extending it with every motion. So the cooldown will be 70 seconds after your motion stops. I have actually used a rule that checks if door was open 70 seconds ago and if it was possible to leave the room when motion actually stopped. One more problem that I discovered is that it still does not check the motion continuously. Looks like it checks it every 5 seconds or so, so if you entered the room, closed the door and, for example sit down to do your thing, it will like not detect those few seconds it took you to sit down. A real shame really, as the sensor is great otherwise.

@@bigdeal87 I don't think it will have any meaningful effect on battery, as it is always active during sleep anyway. It does seem to still have 5 seconds of ignorance after initial trigger, so if my motion takes 4 seconds, the whole cooldown will be 70 seconds instead of 74, as expected. This is not good, as it makes presence detection bit tricky in some corner cases.

Nice video! if I can get power to the location, I still prefer to use your DIY Multi Sensor that you showed a while back. Any chance of doing some Door/Window sensors in the future. One last thing where did you get that "Got MQTT?" shirt

Yes I love my ESP based motion sensors as well. Little different ball game there but no batteries and all MQTT. Zigbee is a great option for me where I can't get power to easily. Second.. I made it. Just one of my weird ideas to do. We were talking in my discord server(link in this video description for anyone reading going what discord?) I might do a small run for some people and make these shirts. Pricing some shirts later today to see what the cost would be.

I never trust motion sensors for "Clear", and in my automations set them to run if "Cear" for X minutes, usually 2-5 to be safe before turning lights off automatically.

Good overview. I was about to buy Sonoff as I have sonoff devices already. But the issue with continuous motion is a no go for me. Has this been resolved with updates maybe?

Definitely get what you pay for with the Hue I found. I was very surprised.

That is the exact reason why I had to build my own Wemos D1 Mini External Interrupt Wake Shield. It Works great works on 2x 18650 batteries not the cheap way of doing it but I wasnt trying to build a cheap product. I Was after Quality now I have 8 of them guarding my House at nights with MQTT Mosquitto and Home Assistant. It feels good to be in control and not in the control of Company...

Hi, Can you recomend some sensoor that I can use to detect my cats? We have a huge pack of street dogs just on the other side of my fence, they already killed one of my cats. I am looking for the solution that can be placed in 2m outdoor hallway to detect them and warn me that they escaped from the house. I need an instant notification, wifi or sim..also it has to update all the time. For example some of them have the immunity if there is a movement detected, they wont detect anything for lets say 2 minutes...5 minutes...I don't want that.. I need constant update of movement cause we have tree that can false trigger it.

Aqara sucks for me. they just keep going to sleep and never wake up. i got some ikea tradfri ones and they are much better. but havent tried any of the ones in the video so cant compare. good vid !

Do we need several zigbee hubs, or you can use one (NOT the echo DOT 4th) for all your zigbee devices?. Sorry for the ignorant question, but I'm new to the zigbee protocol.

Only one Zigbee hub/coordinator, other powered Zigbee devices such as plugs, switches, etc will repeat the signal creating a mesh if needed.

I'd be interested in your thoughts about the Shelly wireless motion sensor (wi-fi not Zigbee.) I had initial issues with it that were fixed by a couple of firmware updates and a static IP, but now it works well as a sensor. The only problem I still have is the web interface becomes inaccessible after a short time and it needs a reset to "wake it up". Curious if anyone else is having this problem.

Yes, they state it is compatible with that hub.

I'm afraid I'll be returning my Linkind sensor. I haven't had any luck with it reporting reliably. It stays on "detected" for hours at a time whereas my Aqara sensors update without fail. I also like the additional "Occupancy" and "Lux" outputs that the Aqara include. I have even removed and re-added it a couple times to no avail.

Interesting. Mine show 5.13 in Zigbee2MQTT, most of the users I do talk to use Zigbee2MQTT with Home Assistant and/or NodeRed though. I'll have to see if I can pair one up with a hub I have of theirs to see if it will take an official upgrade. Linkind has been receptive on their support channels.

Looking at your numbers that might be 5.12 where 5.13 appears to be the latest. I paired it with their little hub and there was no firmware upgrade available for the motion sensor. Not sure if support would give us the files to do the upgrade via other methods but worth a shot.

Does the Linkind need another hub? Can i just pair it with my nortek zigbee hub on home assistant?

@@digiblurDIY I bought some linkind motion sensors and they are on firware 0x51230002, there fore they have problems updating the state. Sometimes they get stuck on Detected for several hours. Do you happen to know how I could update the firmware?

@@digiblurDIY I'm just trying to kill 3 birds with 1 stone by having my bath lights come on auto & turn on the vent fan based on humidity relative to other devices tracking temp/humidity in the house. I bought several Homeseer HMS200, but they don't play nice with Home Assistant (zwave, I have 0 other zw devices) . . . which I should've researched BEFORE purchasing.

Try homeseer mini sensor, mag base, i have one in laundry room, one in the bedroom closet, on time set in homeseer, work good

Probably the Linkind or Third Reality given they both mention the compatibility with the Amazon Echo. More about size and looks

The Sonoff issue is an annoying one that I noticed after getting mine too to control lights, however I found that if you flash the Sonoff Zigbee Bridge with Tasmota and use the default Zigbee2Tasmota, the mqtt does send a Occupancy=1 tag when motion is detected, but also sends a ZoneStatusChange=1 tag. If there is still motion after around a minute another mqtt message would come with Occupancy=0 (As you've shown in the video) but the ZoneStatusChange would stay as =1, if there isn't motion anymore then it would also become =0, so I've now just created an Mqtt sensor in Home Assistant that uses the ZoneStatusChange tag instead of the Occupancy tag and now it is working very well as a motion sensor to automate my lights!

Do you happen to know if the Sonoff by default also shares that ZoneStatusChange via ZigBee? My Aqara one has both occupancy AND an ias_zone entity, when paired into ZHA (not ZigBee2MQTT). Maybe the Sonoff does too

I was trolling the Philips PR team.

I love Sonoff but the motion sensor is terrible. I have the same issue with them indicating occupied rooms are clear. I've also had more false positives then I would like. They always detect the initial motion but it's as if the threshold raises. Then whatever it detects must leave the room for a cooling down period to reset it.

I checked price history $26.99-$69.99 with a current price of $39.99. i think I may wait for a sale or find a cheaper sensor. Linkind doesn't look too bad. Thanks for the great video and if you don't mind.. What was that ZigBee dongle you recommended for plugging in the back of a HomeAssistant server? I wrote it down somewhere and forgot. EDIT: Amazon has the Linkind for $14.99 after the $3 off coupon.

I just don't get why they don't let you set the cool down period.

Hey, just wanted to say "thanks for making this". I think the Sonoff ones may have had a firmware update? I think I'm going to roll the dice on a few. They're cheap on aliexpress; about a 50% savings sometimes vs. Amazon in the US. If those don't work I like the ThirdReality ones simply because they take AAA. Question for you - are you a Home Assistant guy? I've also been considering YoLink; YoLink is supposed to have HomeAssistant integration by the end of March. The whole "LoRa" thing interests me; seems like it may be more efficient than Zigbee but so far it's basically YoLink and no one else in the space.

I'd probably wait it out if you really want that brand until the next hardware revision comes out. Yes, I do some HA stuff indeed. I've looked at YoLink before and while the range is nice, I haven't had range issues in my home or even neighbor's yard to put sensors. I even did 1500ft link with Zigbee without issues on a video. I have a lot of interference on the 900mhz hand here but maybe LoRa could deal with it given the lower bandwidth and such the way it is designed to deal stuff like that. I'll be curious to see if their integration involves enabling MQTT locally or just going cloud junk. Speakong efficiency though I'll have to say Zigbee is going to be more efficient on my time and money at this time due to many manufacturers are competing for business on Zigbee and not just one hub ecosystem.

Looks like they ALL require a HUB? Did I miss something. I currently have a bunch of wyze cameras, sensors and 9 ECHO devices and I really don't want to have to rely on another hub.

No hub just home assistant and usb coordinator to control all your different manufacturer's zigbee devices.

I can confirm Sonoff sensor does not retrigger at continuous motion. Drove me over the cliff mentally :). Too bad the size is perfect.

Great price too but the issues of it had to keep me away from getting more.

I dont have issue with snzb03 from sonoff, only that 1minute delay is just bad. Though it only works propwrly with official sonoff zigbee gateway and zha integration on home assistant via sonoff usb, it starts havibg issue once you use it to zigbee2mqtt which all the issue seen on this video are present. Tldr, dont use zigbee2mqtt with sonoff stuff.

Or quite the opposite don't use Sonoff Zigbee stuff. That sensor is a mess. So many others out there that work fine.

Aqara and Xiaomi look almost the same, but they are not the same sensors. Aqara has an extra light sensor and adjustable sensitivity.

Does anyone using 433Mhz?? I am using the sonoff rf bridge with esphome and is almost instantly responds from my doors sensors! I just order smog detectors 433Mhz also

Google AI and Phillip Hues. I currently use Google routines and voice commands (we all know how well Google likes to listen to a command and do the exact opposite)

Tried the Linkind ZS110040078 and it goes to detected and never clears. Tried two of them and they both do the same thing.

Definitely return them as that is not normal. I have a few of them around the house and know several others that use them. Could be too sensitive maybe due to heat movements or something else weird in the area. Put one under a thick cloth to blind it and see if it goes to clear.

@@digiblurDIY Home assistant with HUSBZB-1 USB hub. I also have a couple of the Philips motion detectors and they work perfectly. Those are the only zigbee devices I have.

That one is very old for sure. I'd highly recommend a CC2652 stick like the iTead Sonoff one I showed recently in the upgrade firmware video. Lots of flavors and MASSIVE difference in reliability and speed.

Have you tested Tuya PIR? It's around the same price as the Sonoff, maybe a bit higher. But I'm afraid with these Chinese brands, that they could be just be using the same sensor or even rebadge.

The Aqara has a more recent T1 version. I believe this allows you to set the cooldown period to 1-199s. I'm curious how that would compare in this lineup :)

No. I have done those in the past with AM312 and ESP chips.

Is it just me or is does every motion sensor look like they're from the 90's😂😂😂

FYI on the Sonoff Sensor - if its setup with ewelink as an automation/scene it presents the issue you show - HOWEVER if you set it up with Alexa the routine works PERFECTLY - Go figure!

WyzeSense does not require the cloud... I run mine locally, with the dongle directly into a USB port, not their camera like they say I must... They're just selling cameras... LOL That said, they are past end of life, and I'm looking for replacements for when they die entirely, but they haven't yet. Pesky things just keep working. (The one in my mailbox doesn't like cold temperatures though.) :-)

@@digiblurDIY Those were the best. Super small and had great range and reliability. All of mine ended up bricked and I've had a hard time finding a suitable replacement. I prefer to have my motion detectors more "stealthy", so the black lens on the wyze was an added bonus. I'm actually surprised nobody else makes a black pir.

The sonoff is indeed a pile of shit. It's amazing how useless the product is. It's meant to be a smart device! It constantly disconnects, and needs to be factory reset often. Shocking that it can be sold in European markets for 10 to 15 Euros.

Btw Travis, i have modded 4 of this aqara motion sensor ( 5 sec. cool down) and one of them i killed, it is always detecting motion (about 4,5 times a minute).... and i done the mod 16 months ago anda never changed the battery, not even that faulty one, i have it now in the xiaomi gateway and it stills sending triggers, and i didnt even know where it is right now 😂

So i can say that this would not change so much ( if at all) the battery life. What some folks complains about ( not hapenning to me) is that sometimes the sensors after trigger motion it retriggers a few seconds later with no motion at all.

I’m not sure what the point of doing the mod is if you’re using home assistant. You can just reset the state of the Aqara sensor to “off” with a script and it will trigger again in about 5 seconds.

@@nathanvancleave8434 very simple. You do that ( in z2m there is no need, its enought editing the occupancy time out) and then see how much time is needed to the sensor goes on again. Only that ( script or wathever) is useless, the cool down is always 1 minute for aqara. Unless you do the mod!
