I love these kinds of videos so much. I remember fixing an old Socket 7 motherboard back in the day when I was a kid, by resoldering a 5 volt converter to the board that I ripped off an older 486 board. I didn't even know what the parts were at the time. I just knew it was broken/burnt and I had a part on another board with a similar number on it. It ended up working and I used it for a few years. Videos like this bring me back to those days.

you should look for an IR reflow machine instead of a heat gun there cheap now. Got mine in 2009 and paid $3000 for it. there like $500 now for a decent one. you dont need the BGA reballer just the IR to reflow.

I'm glad at least one of the three boards managed to spring back to life. I'm very gracious about that to be openly honest. The other two I really wanted to see suddenly wake up, but there's only so much that can be done tbh. Also I don't have cats! I have dogs! Your suspicion is right though, I think it's because I had so much dog fur from my recently passed away Australian Shepherds that it ended up; unfortunately short circuiting the Maximus VIII Formula motherboard. As for the OMEN it sounds like it is dead dead, and at least it lived a good three months haha. I think the lesson here is to on-occasion take out all of your computer parts and give them a good clean. Dust blower, cue tips, Isopropyl Alcohol, all that stuff if done once a year can hopefully keep your components alive for a little longer. Great Video! Keep up the Tech Yes Fixin' :)

That P6T Deluxe was the same motherboard I managed to "revive" with a good socket pin scrub, the two middle RAM slots weren't being recognized, so I gave them a bath in isoprophyl alcohol and scrub the socket with one of those antistatic brushes. Also, that board has the worst CMOS battery placement I've ever seen, vertically on a corner... I had to solder it back in place since the middle pin broke and the battery wasn't making proper contact and resetting every single reboot.

Picked up an Asus p9x79 Pro with i73820, 8x4GB of DDR3 1600 HyperXFury RAM, and a CoolerMaster Hyper 412S; this bundle was purchased almost three years ago for ~US$220. I've been running the motherboard as a daily driver since, although I did upgrade to E5-1680v2 (4.3Ghz OC) and a PCCooler (GI-D66A w/230W TDP). After selling off the CPU and Cooler, I basically got the motherboard for about ~US20.

Generally motherboard refused to turn on is usually points toward vrm power delivery having a faulty MOSFET or shorting to ground. And second thing is the CPU socket have a short life cycle if you constantly put in and take out the CPU too many times you will put the pins out of place and can short out something on the board resulting no post. Now the GPU with no post is a whole different situation as fault finding the board is tricky as you need thermal camera, voltage injection, digital multi meter with fine tips, knowledge and replacement parts

It’s not easy to fly anywhere these days. We have tried twice to fly to Brazil to meet my wife’s family but the flight got cancelled each time. The first flight we booked before covid was even a thing and the date was right after the first lockdowns started. The second we booked after the first wave was over and we thought it would be ok in 2021. My wife hasn’t seen her family in 5 years since it is too expensive to fly from Sweden each year. Our plan was to go every 3 years but now it will be much longer. So while I personally have my family here I can still feel for you because I know what she is going through.

I sold a Motherboard, CPU, RAM bundle and 2 days later the buyer messaged me saying it wasn't working and could I take a look at it for them. So they bought it over installed in the case and straight away I saw the problem..... they had used a 6+2 PIN PCIE connector on the motherboard EPS connection. I found the 4+4 PIN connector tucked away in the back plugged it in and away it went..... kind of a novice mistake but everyone has to learn.... I didn't charge them a penny extra and also tidied up their cable management for them too :)

Am I really the only one who noticed a corrosive looking point under the top left VRAM Chip @5:13 ? Maybe John tried to clean the GPU as well and didn't let it dry long enough, causing it to stop outputting an image. After he put them aside and later sent them to you, the water caused the corrosion. So either way, I think the VRAM Chip is now faulty and 2 blame.

I have an old GPU who has similar issues but worse and only when some sort of 3D acceleration is happening which is really a mess you can't do anything with it, but i have found a use for it, i have it on NAS OMV-based server and since the server runs at 2D graphics when you boot it and the mobo won't boot without a GPU because it doesn't even have an internal one, the GPU being broken for 3D doesn't matter there cause terminal GUI (and even at BIOS) have no issue whatsoever. I have placed a fan beside it because it really needs it since it only has a passive cooling and it works wonders, but this is probably what damaged it in the first place from whoever had the card before me.

Regarding the SSD question at the end, I only use my pc for gaming, browsing and light office work (and I imagine a lot of people do), and I don't notice the difference between SATA SSDs and NVMEs at all. I went from a standard SATA SSD in my last build to a 980 Pro in my newest build. Does that game load 2 seconds faster now? Maybe, but I won't notice wether a game takes 8 or 10 seconds to boot up. Both is incredibly fast. Does Windows boot up faster? I wouldn't know, it was almost instantly there before, and it's almost instantly there now. I also rarely feel a difference when working with other PCs (except when they still have an HDD as a boot drive). And when flipping PCs, I usually choose a standard SATA SSD to save money.

In most cases you won't feel the difference but if you watched Linus' videos especially in very niche use cases (IE storing some to be edited RAW footage via NVME you can see the difference in how Premier or After Effects is able to stream the data from the Server to the PC) since the decoding and encoding is done on the server side and the main PC is just "parsing" that data

Due to architecture of SSD, it has better performance when get larger capacity like RAM has more channel memory does. so if u have money, try to get a larger SSD if u can, especially u choosing NVME SSD for your new PC after 2022, at least 500/512 GB or up but it is limit in 2TB due to the bandwidth of Bus(Pci-e GEN 3 or GEN4 or just using SATA), more over, more meaningful testing figure for SSD is to look the actual 4K Random/IOPS of the test/official number from manufacturer. For my opinion, Kingston A2000 series is better for value, reliability & performance.

@@edwardtan1354 exactly my point, and also the main takeaway of that video for me. Yes the NVME is theoretically better and there are niche use cases were they legitimately make sense to get.

the rampage IV ex is a motherboard I have once lived with, it has a notorious cold start fault and warming the board up with a hairdyer for a bit will get it booting, worth a try just get it all setup with and ready to go, then just wave hot air around the board to bring it up to temp should fire it up right away, should also start in warm enviroments over 33c or there abouts, I really do hope you see this because this was a common fault with Rampage IV Exteme owners, the best solution keep it running, and keep a hair dryer handy to warm it up in the case of cold start fault. the cold start fault started showing up on these boards around 2014 as the came out at the end of 2011 most just lived with it after learning how to make them boot.

When mine don't boot I warm them up with a hairdryer (max heat from about 20cm) and they turn on after 10-20 seconds of heat, maybe 30 if stubborne. (I also live here in QLD and they still have this issue in summer) Might be worth a shot.

I've had several motherboards that either wouldn't come up at all or would fail in the POST process somewhere and hang on boot. No fireworks or nasty abrupt shutdown, just one day wouldn't come up. Like an old person dying in their sleep, that's how most of your electronic devices are going to fail. Asus good with pilot and POST LEDs but my old Crosshair V indicator for CPU was lit red so I bought a compatible Sempron on Amazon dirt cheap and it still wouldn't boot. The old CPU would boot in a different AM3+ board and so would the Sempron. Most of the boards that I had crap out this way had already gotten a lot of use and no new BIOS updates were being written so I ended up chucking them. Probably an upset failure that picked that particular time to give up the ghost.

hi, 26:35 it depends on the IO, some have use a part of the bios, to work. the 3 boards , dead normaly have some power rails down 3.3v. 5v, 1v... is need to check first, best way is to compare to a working one :

Oh I murdered many DFi Lanparty's back in the day as the big thing was overclocking single core Bartons and Mobile AMD chips to run stable 3ghz and I got my name up in the list over on Overclockers quite late in the day as I found a lovely Mobile that with a peltier setup I could run at the magic 3ghz stable but the vmodding was insane... it lasted a month before the Lanparty melted finally but had scored :D

The Maximus sound like a dead short. W n a board powers up and then quickly powers right down it’s probably the power supply shutting off due to that short.

Brian, your statement regarding Bios flashing a dead motherboard being futile is incorrect. I have recently resurrected a ASROCK Z170 Pro4 after a failed bios update(It hung due to a faulty USB Flash drive). Only the power supply fan would spin and a brief flash from the CPU fans led upon powering off. I reflashed the bios using an Ch341a Bios Eeprom USB Programmer and now the board is working perfectly.

Been thinking about getting one of those bigger cleaners myself. I used to run a Epson wf 3640 printer and the print heads always dry out and stop working. I gave up and went back to a HP 9025 all in one that can sit forever and the print heads never get plugged with dry ink, it just prints till it runs out of ink. What machine did you get and how much US for it? I still might get one as you can super clean about anything that will fit. Love what you do and making old stuff live again and make a few bucks as well.

I have the same X58 Asus Rampage III Extreme board you have Brian. I bought it off Facebook Marketplace, tested it, ran great. When I began putting it in my case and was on home stretch, I tried turning it on again and it wouldn't POST. Really soured me on Asus since you have a video about how great Asus boards are and feature that same X58 board in the video. Wonder if you would like a try to at reviving it because I've tried everything - Changed the RAM, CPU, PSU..etc Upon further research I found it this was a common thing with this particular board; where it's working fine then all of a sudden doesn't and does exactly what mine does. Here's what happens, when powering on, the board's LEDs come on (though not all of them) on the 4 LEDs near the CPU that cycle through CPU, RAM, HDD and GPU, it'll get stuck on RAM. With some combinations it'll give me some beeps but nothing comes on screen.

Sounds like it might be BIOS bit rot at fault. In which case you might be lucky, as this board has socketed dual BIOS chips. First of all, reseat those, as contact issues are not uncommon among socketed chips of all kinds (a bit of contact cleaner or at least isopropyl alcohol may not hurt). Next switch to the secondary BIOS chip and see how that goes. If successful, you will have to research how to properly reflash both chips. It is generally recommended to replace flash chips prone to bit rot with more dependable specimens.

  • @PrometheusOfVideos

@@PileOfEmptyTapes I do recall seeing that the BIOS chips to most likely be the culprit for this issue...I've tried switching BIOS but haven't reseated / cleaned them as you recommended. Though what was also telling was not all the normal LEDs were turning on as that board has lots of them, like the RAM LED that tells you how much power you're giving it, like 'Normal' to 'High' with red, yellow and green but those were off. Would the BIOS rot be the cause of all that? I've begun to move on from x58 to a Ryzen system which I have yet to build. As much as I love x58 the lack of AVX is preventing me from playing certain games.

@@PrometheusOfVideos I imagine a lot of the onboard indicators are ultimately software controlled directly or indirectly (there may be stuff on a serial bus like what's used for fan control and temperature readout), so would require a working BIOS. As iconic as LGA1366 is, you'll probably be thrilled with a new system. Aside from the AVX issue, X58 rigs tend to be notorious power hogs as well, with idle power sitting at 80-100 W pretty much no matter what you do. Modern systems can be remarkably efficient if you let them. Throw in 2-3 times as much computing power as a hexacore LGA1366 CPU even on a modest Ryzen 5600X, plus proper 6 GBit SATA, properly fast native USB 3, onboard M.2 and PCIe 4.0, and you can tell that things have progressed a fair bit over the last 12 years after all. I can't say I agree with every single development, notably cases dropping 5.25" drive bays almost entirely in the interest of even more airflow... that's getting a bit too single function for my tastes there. I deliberately went with an older model case for my current build for this reason... I'm not much of a gamer at all but do need to rip a CD once in a while. Went from a Xeon L3360 (basically a C2Q Q9550S) on socket 775 with DDR2 to an i7 11700... talk about a bit of a jump. ;) (I was tempted to go AMD but the long-standing USB issues and others with C-states kind of scared me off. The last thing I need is audio dropouts.)

Nvidia mats - often no picture or artefacts are from faulty memory (common problem with 10xx/20xx/30xx cards). Shows exactly what memory bank is at error. certain cases may also be dead memory controller in gpu. Also try as secondary card and look what bios it has. Seen many cards with either dead bios chip or some wierd/faulty bios flashed in ;) + test 12v, 5v and 1,8v rails to see are they there and what they are. seen cards with just a blown fuse (usualy long time miners). I learned lot from Tech Cemetery videos. Hes awesome at resurecting video cards and gives detailed describtion what and why he does.

I watched 1000s component level repairs, and the biggest thing that kills GPUs permanently is people doing the heat gun thing. If you watch repairs very few are cracked solder balls under the GPU, and if it is, and a heat gun works, there is a 80% chance it will die again latter, ie, when a balls cracks it oxides, and when it's heat gunned the inclusion/oxide ends up in the ball and it cracks again. In repairs 25% are dead cores, ie, not economical to fix, with 75% being other stuff on the PCB, ie, not the core.
