@AugustoEL Not necessarily, I grew up on the other side of the country due to my parents having job opportunities, and I never had a relationship with my grandparents besides at Christmas some years. There are no guarantees, and the MIL could have done everything right and still wound up SOL. Also, OP is going to be wishing they had some support besides financial once the baby comes. I wouldn't be surprised if they walked it all back and made amends.

I hate when people act like its bad to want your inheritance when the family in question has been nothing but awful to you. You owe someone who treats you badly your whole life exactly 0, and OPs husband was right. He should get the money if nothing else than because he dealt with them so long, and I don't think it makes you materialistic to hope for the 1 good thing they could do for you.

Yeah, that part of the story rubbed me the wrong way to a degree; how obsessed they were with the inheritance. But then again given how the MIL has treated her son, OP's husband, his whole life I can also feel like he has earned that inheritance. Like compensation for the hardships he had to go through because of his nasty, unbearable mother. Of course in the end it's his parents' choice what to do with their own money, no one is entitled to their money, but it's also OP's and her husband's choice where they live and who they allow into their lives. And it seems like MIL won't be part of that unless she changes drastically. And I don't think someone that old - with rare exceptions - is capable of changing.

If you're so insufferable as a parent that your child who isn't financially well off will only tolerate you for the possibility of money after you die then it says more about you than the child. Heck, the only reason he's done so well in his job is because of his parents but not in the way that makes them look good. He's well off now because he doesn't want to rely on his parents inheritance and doesn't want to put up with them any more.

Did find op and her husband at fault as well as they would have not been in any mess if they were not materialistic. With how story goes I am pretty damn sure op's husband must have taken money from his parent for his college tuition and they further accepted the gift of the house for marriage with even we all know is expensive. Furthermore, op herself repeatedly claim her and her husband's materialistic nature. So, I do feel a doubt can op have manipulated story for it to be in her favour as people see and perceive same situations in different perspectives.

Op and her husband were also in the wrong it only happened to work out because he suddenly got a promotion, but she admitted they were planning on sticking around, aka using them for their inheritance. It would be one thing if they never cared about the money then MIL would 1000 percent be in the wrong however she admitted they stuck around and played nice for their money so what MIL did wasn't really an asshole move it was just as much of a transaction as what op and her husband were doing to them. " I know you're using me for the inheritance. However, if you want my money, I want a grandchild, " which up until he got the promotion, the first part of that statement would have been correct. How can OP expect to be given all their money but then refuse to abide by the things they want. Like "give me all your money, I'm going to be fake nice to you pretend it's out of duty qnd not abide by your wishes and refuse to be told what to do" they only stopped caring about the money at the last minute when he was rich enough for it not to matter, which she admitted to in the post. Op sounds materialistic, and so does her husband. If they were that abusive, he should have left sooner, not maintaining a fake relationship with his parents for money. Both op and the parents are the assholes here.

Yeah, I agree. OP admits in the beginning that she was worried "...I was kinda afraid that maybe I'd pissed her off really badly and we couldn't afford to do that if WE wanted to inherit ALL their [key word here , their, because it IS MIL & FIL'S money & house, to with as they wish.] Money and house. {@ 2:04 }. Then she contradicts herself when she said "We didn't have to stick around 'JUST for the inheritance anymore, because that's going to come around much later..." "So it was 'OBVIOUSLY' out of a sense of responsibility and duty that we stuck with them" 🙄🤔{@ 8:40} In my opinion, OP also throws bubby under the bus when she said "I know it 'SEEMS' shallow and selfish to want to stick around your in-laws 'JUST' for the inheritance, but they are quite well off and my husband also believes that life will be easy for us if we have that sort of money." {@2:10} OP bent herself in a pretzel to justify her and hubby's entitlement, however, MIL is all kinds of wrong thinking she has any thing other than just an opinion about their family unit. And FIL is at fault too, for sacrificing his relationship with his son and his family for the sake of 'not rocking the boat". My grandfather was and my FIL is exactly like OP's FIL. They think keeping the peace is worth it, but they don't understand the hurt and lack of security it causes to the other close people in their life. So, yeah, in my humble opinion, they are all AITA in different degrees. I am glad that OP and hubby are happy and content with his employment position and their new family unit.

You're sticking around for money than you're also terrible. Even if it's practical. Even if it's deserved. You're just as superficial as they are

Idk, MIL is annoying and clearly doesn't know how to respect boundaries BUT to me OP and her husband being so worried about the inheritance just doesn't sit right with me. Maybe it's just me but it feels so wrong to look at someone as a resource, specially regarding money. Like, they were basically just waiting for MIL to die and give them the money they think they deserve... they don't sound like good people to me

So the MIL wasn't treating her son like a resource by basically demanding he give her a grandchild to show off to her cabal of boring, nosy old bats? She went so far as to threaten cutting off his inheritance. How is that not using someone, but waiting for compensation from poor parents is? Your perspective is ALL the was fucked up. I imagine you are a similar person to MIL of you think that way. I hope you change.

Correct me if I'm wrong but OP and her husband's family is most probably Asian, Chinese to be exact. Notice how the MIL said 25 is too old to be single because in Chinese culture, it sort of is. 27, you are probably getting raised eyebrows from your Chinese relatives and by 30 and still single you are basically called a "left-over" woman. This is a common upbringing in a Chinese household. Although not all, in Chinese culture, money and having a lot of it is sort of a bragging rights and in Chinese family you are valued based on how much money you have, your job position, your properties etc. Nobody can look down on you and say anything negative to you. Your relatives will listen to you more because you are a person of high stature. This is a toxic culture but can't really blame them if they are raised that way. I'm actually impressed they prefer to be more independent. A more common daughter in law will have to suck-up until her in laws die and enjoy the money later. And so, the cycle will continue. Moving out is a good thing for them to finally break the cycle and maybe they will raise their kids to be less materialistic, away from the culture they grew up.

OP said they never asked for money. And the eventual inheritance was going to be compensation for putting up with the insults and blackmailing from MIL. MIL is just a evil mastermind that wanted to control everyone in their family. And OP/husband leaving immediatly after they became financially stable indicated they really didnt care about the inheritance if it meant they could chose how to live. Which is the way its supposted to be.

@@mynailfairy Thank you, although I'm aware of Chinese culture (regarding what you explained) I didn't know they are Chinese so that makes more sense :) However, I still feel kind of the same since I do not share the culture (I'm not from the US btw); I find that side of Chinese kind of unhealthy but I understand that's a personal thing.
