Many international friendly's are taken seriously. They keep track of stats if it is sanctioned by fifa. (Many are) Players try they're hardest since they are playing for they're country. Doesn't matter who the opponent is. They're friendly's in name only.

Here in SA it goes like this: Brasil and Uruguay is the second rivalry, and the first rivalry is literally anyone against Argentina. Haha

@vor 11 Monaten because that's how things worked out. It's the tradition of these nations in regard to this particular sport. It's like the all blacks and the springboks, everyone recognizes brasil as the best footballers (of course the last 15 years were rough) the only ones to question this are the argentinians. Also have a bit of an attitude towards other south american countries because they are predominantly white, oops, I mean, their culture is closer to european culture.

@vor 11 Monaten german is a common language in some parts of paraná, santa catarina and rio grande do sul. But I really think this data is outdated because the japanese and chinese colonies in são paulo and paraná are huge and show no sign of slowing down. I feel very happy because of the diversity of my country! Of course each region has it's predominat ethnicities, but you can find pretty much anyone anywhere. :D

A rivalry is much deeper than that, often determined by politics, history and much more. What about Italy v Croatia. That's a rivalry, much like Belgium v France is.
