Railroad stock is excellent material for hammers and other tools, 1070 steel is more than adequate for such applications.

Rail track, in Canada is of the 1084 type steel. Good for tools......

Now that is some skill. They were taking what looked like old railroad rails, cut to a length and then pounding them into hammer head shapes. I've seen other blacksmiths hand make one or two hammer heads, but these men have a unique assembly line system that works well.

Not pounding, forging. Forging not only shapes the billet, it refines the grain structure, causing the crystal lattice of the steel to follow the shape imparted. That means a stronger, tougher part that resists deforming and breakage.

These were processes used in the US nearly 100 years ago my is my guess. Amazing!

What era de s and models did you make? Also, how did you heat treat them? Did you do it while the steel was hotter? Did you quench the whole piece instead of just face hardening them? I’d really love to know your old process!
