Most in depth look at a 1941-1946 Chevy AK series truck. This truck is the end of an era in a lot of ways.

I bought one of these brand new of the lot the same day my wife and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. We still have it and someday it will be my son's truck. My wife has been pregnant with him for the last 30 years so he could be here any day 🎂

I have one of these too, it’s a old 41 1 ton I guess, some one said it’s a 11/2 ton truck , 20 inch tires, 216 I think is what is in my truck, it was a navy flatbed, nice 👍 thanks BigAl California. Praise Jesus grace Christ amen 🙏.

Yeah I can only go off of what the owner told me 235 straight 6 three speed non synco... that was the first time I drove a truck with 235 and it was slow... my ad series has a 350 v8 which is the perfect engine for that truck.. it’s not over the top (thought about doing an ls swap) good for 80 and in my setup gets 16 mpg HWY.

I like the looks of the old AK trucks... I'd love to find an "unmolested" '46 1/2 ton for a decent price, but too many of them have been "hot rodded". I've never even had the pleasure of driving one of these AK's though... I've driven a couple of AD's and some Task Force trucks, but the AK's are pretty rare. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I got to drive this one it was so cold that day and this one was on modified it was very slow and geared really low I have an AD 1 ton and absolutely love it it’s got a different drive train in it but everything else is the same gauges are the same chassis is the same manual brakes that you have to pump up every so often to stop manual steering I wouldn’t have it any other way but I totally know why people do it they put it on a different chassis so they can get parts easier he uses kingpins in the front which haven’t been a big deal for me.. less to go wrong

The 216 was known as the Babbitt pounder

Some information I have seen suggests that (starting in 1941) the larger trucks like that one had a 235 engine rather than the 216. Very difficult at times to tell the difference but most of the splash oiling (vs later pressure oiled) 235s had only the lifter side cover bolted on - as opposed to the 216 which always had a full side cover that covered both lifters and spark plugs covered by the panel. There may have even been some early "splash oiling" 235s in these larger trucks that had a full side cover exactly like the 216. In either event, I believe these early 235s were all poured babbitt bearings vs. insert bearings up until about 53 or 54. Would be interested to hear if that is all consistent with your understanding or if I'm off base there.

@@What.its.like. it’s slow , tons of torque. Fun truck. It didn’t come with a brake booster from the factory but it did come with a synchronized four speed transmission. Pretty heavy truck. I rewired, reupholstered and painted it myself. When I bought it, it had a pile of rat poop on the seat. Yuck. It’s reliable but slow, 35 mph top speed. The wheels are military green on the inside which leads me to believe that it was an army truck. I put a CB radio in it.
