most functional adventure camera backpack

Ойын-сауық

As a traveling creator, my camera bag system is very important to me. The more fluent it is - the better the chances of a good creative flow.
I tried many camera bags over the years, did a lot of research and I am not really attached to one system or another. I just want the best camera bag that would take care of most my traveling and creating needs.
And this is how I found Shimoda Design.
Shimoda creates travel camera backpacks that are built for adventure. And I know it sounds like an ad, but I was not paid by Shimoda, nor do they know what I was going to say in this video. They just wanted a woman perspective on their backpacks, so they sent me one for free.
And I am happy to say that, by far, the best option for women, with most customization, comfort, functionality - is Shimoda backpacks.
So I might sound a little like a fan girl in this video. Thats because I am hehe

Absolutely agree with you! I have a Shimoda 30l Explore V2, I love it. Yet I'm looking for around 15l lightweight daypack for just one camera body and 1-2 lenses with space for action camera, other personal items, water bottle pocket, which can attach small travel tripods outside, and still has removable or hidable hipbelt... Haven't found a perfect solution yet. Do I ask for too much? LOL

Haha I feel like we do!! But I believe Shimoda can bring at least some of these request into reality! Idk about a hip belt though. If it’s this small 15-20L and you are going to just put a couple things in there, we don’t really need hip support? I used to own explore 25L and I literally never used the hip belt, just because of how light it was even fully packed. But you are right, we need something more casual for every day. That is partially why I’ve been rocking my Explore v2 30L for the last year as well. It is a bit more casual then Action X series. But I love action x for what it’s made for - action!

I was thinking about the Brevite before the Shimoda Urban Explorer was announced. I grabbed that instead and I’m guessing you backed the 20L version? I may get one of the women’s bag for my spouse

I didn’t back anything this time! I have more than enough of Shimodas bags and they are amazing! 😅 And it really depends on two criteria’s: 1. How big of a human is your spouse? A lot of women find 30L too big, but to me it’s just right. I am 6’ tall though, so I’m obnoxiously taller then most women 😅 And 2. What is the purpose of the backpack? If it’s excursions and your spouse needs something rugged and super functional - then Shimoda will be your best bet! The only reason I use Brevite for every day carry is because it’s a lot more “chill” and I can use it as a normal backpack, whether I have my camera in it or not!

Nice vid! I’m trying to pick between the x25 or x30 to go on a plane as my personal item. Would both of these work or would I have to go for the smaller bag? Thanks!

  • @LanaOkeaness

Omg I literally made that my mission 😅 It depends where you are traveling! 25l will for sure work as a personal item. I also never had a problem with the 30L, although you might encounter some stubborn airline somewhere in Asia that would ask you to strictly follow their rules 🙄 However, if you were to utilize that trick with removing the frame, I think you would be fine. Or if not, every one of their camera cubes comes with a carrying bag, so if they are SUPER insistent then you can check the bag and carry the camera cube in your hands as a little purse separately. Or, what I personally did is I have a few collapsible reusable nano bags, that are stuffed in all my travel bags. They carry more volume then the camera cubes. So you can put your gear + some accessories there. It would not be a comfy flight, but you will still have all your gear with you 😅 But I also know that Ian (the founder of Shimoda) lives in Japan, and I did ask him about 30l vs 25l difference on that side of the world, he said he never had an issue! So it is really up to you. I used to own the 25L, but not all of my gear fit, and it was quite little for my 6’ tall self 😅

@@LanaOkeaness thanks so much! Your answer was super informative for me; I may be tempted to get the x30 then as I want to fit the Sony FX6 and FX3 in there with 2 lenses for flights . Do you know if it is possible to fit a DJI RS3 Gimbal in the front zipper instead of the laptop? Kind of like how they do on the PGYTech One Mo 2? Sorry for all the Q’s. Thank you 🙏🏻

@@danieloflaherty2154 Of course! I've been nerding out over that issue for years, so I'm happy to help 😅 Yea if you got 2 chinky bodies like those you'll need a decent camera cube! I'm more worried about the FX6. 25L would definitely be too small, and I am kind of questioning the 30L. The thing is, you can buy the 30L backpack only and separately buy a bigger core unit. But not every core unit fits a 30L backpack. Like there are some Mediuma dn Large DSLR core units that are deeper and larger, but it might not fit the 30L in depth. The 30L starter kit comes with Medium Mirrorless unit, but I don't know if FX6 would fit there! And if it does, it would take most of the space in width. If I was you, I'd reach out to Shimoda and ask them directly. If you send them an email, I'm sure they will help. Tell them what setup you are planning to fit into your backpack and they should be able to guide you from there. With the FX6 you might have to get a bigger bag and have it as a carry-on, not a personal item. You can have another little day bag as a personal item, but would have to carry a lot on your back! I don't own a gimbal, so I never tried to fit it in, but if you are packing your backpack to the brim (which you will with that FX6 LOL), I would be more concerned about damaging the gimbal if you were to put it in front? And if you are planning to shove the backpack under the front seat on the airplane, most practical way to do it is shoulder straps up. Which means, the front pocket will be at the bottom and in contact with the floor and also carrying the weight of the camera cube with gear on top of it. If I was you, I'd just put the gimbal into one of the side pockets maybe? Is that an option?

@@LanaOkeaness good idea! I’ll drop them an email and hopefully will get some good suggestions. In my heart I kind of knew I was gonna need the x40 but I was really hoping I could get away with the x30 😂. I actually don’t mind the x40 my only thing is then I can’t use a small little roller as my carry on; perhaps I’ll just have to accept that depending on what they say. Yeah the side pocket would be fine to be fair and is probably how I would carry it majority of the time. I’m just thinking of times where I may want it in me but also want it incognito mode 🥷. Thanks Lana!

@@danieloflaherty2154 there is no incognito mode, when you got a gimbal LOL. Unless you can find a long sock and cover it up? 😅 anything goes at this point lol And yes in your heart you are right lol. The only other mind-bending option I see is if you already have the roller, or planning to buy it anyways, you can get the x30 and put clothes there? While putting all he gear into the roller (will save your back as well). And when on location, just pick the gear you need for that one day and put that into your x30, while leaving some stuff behind (thats what usually happens to me anyways lol). That way you get best of both worlds? And if they ask you to check one or the other, get everything precious out the the roller into some nano-baggy like I've mentioned before... Damn, if normal people only knew our struggles LOL
