    Correction: M46, M47,M48 were not MBTs, those were heavy tanks. The first real MBT of the US were the M1 Abrams. Also T-80 has nothing to do with T-64, It's a completely new design, like later the T-90 has nothing to do with T-72. 8:50... Thats a Leo2A5 not an A7+ you can easily distinct them by looking at the gun... The A5 has the shorter L/44 while the other variants from A6 have the L/55 longer barrel. :) Also didn't see that first time, the Merkavas always had 120mm cannons, not 125mm. The 125mm caliber mostly used in eastern vehicles. Like russian, chinese etc.

    The tank I drew in elementary school had 4 main guns and so many machine guns it looked like a porcupine. And the track had spikes for running over the enemy. The only problem it had was could only fire the length of a standard sheet of notebook paper and usually in a high arc. It was still underdevelopment when I went to middle school.

    Difficult to assess tanks, as many have never seen action. It's odd to take the likes of the Chieftain and the Centurion, and rank them equally or below other tanks that use the same gun or are variants of the aforementioned, especially when those other tanks haven't seen combat. There are a lot of 'paper tigers' on this list, and hopefully the tanks and their crews will never have to prove otherwise.

    Eh. Tanks really ain't that good against ground forces. Not that hard to lay to a trap, blow the tracks off. The challenge really is getting the hatches open to get to the crew to neutralize them. If you can pop a CS or tear gas grenade down the barrel, you may have a chance of smoking them out, but being that they have a sealed breach that wouldn't work to well. But if you pop a thermite grenade down the tube, and get the hell out of the way, it should in theory "cook" the shell off, at the very least destroying the main gun and very possibly the crew. Or use it to melt through the hatch and go to work. Tanks are only a problem for entrenched guns and other vehicles and tanks.

    If your country is considering new MBTs, K2 Black Panther seems to be the best option. It is under service in S. Korea, where technically still at war with North. Highly reliable, easy maintenance, more economical then Leopard 2A7, and probably faster production and delivery. Its shoot-and-scoot is amazing, fires rapidly and accurately while on the move. Hypo pneumatic suspension provides among the best stability and greater angle..some issues with power packs but seems to have been resolved. One downside is that it doesn’t have RWS which would make it more urban battle ready.

    @@insomniacbritgaming1632 Well, actually, no. The US developed early MBTs based on their experiences with the M26, and their early MBTs influenced their newer ones. The Soviets' early MBTs were influenced by one of their less used, more experimental tanks, the T-44. The Centurion Mk. 1 was developed during WW2, and the Brits just went with it, occasionally up-gunning and -armoring it, then they somehow got to the Chieftain, then the Challies. The Chinese just copied the Soviets. The Swedish bought Centurions, then looked at a door wedge and said, "Yep, that looks like a tank.", then bought Leopard 2A4s after the former idea didn't work that well. The Italians just copied the Germans, basically, then took a liking to armored cars. The Germans, I believe, were influenced by the M48s they got from the US, to develop the Leopard 1, then upgraded the Leopard 1 to a degree that they rather just made a new tank that looked like the upgraded versions, but was better in every aspect, and named it Leopard 2. The French first copied their tanks off the Panthers, then the US, to some degree, in terms of general appearence. The Tigers basically had nothing to do with post-war tank design - honestly, they didn't even have much to do with tank design (regarding appearence) *during* the war, other than most nations wanted to develop tanks (and mainly cannons or ammunition) that could take them out -, and the T-34s' design got outdated and ill-suited for the post-war Soviet combat doctrine very fast.

    A proven formula probably. For many countries it's an issue of "bang-for-the-buck" and their tank doctrine might involve more urban or defensive warfare. It's also a good bet that say 800 Centurions/T-55's/M48's will still create serious destruction against an enemy which only fields say 70-80 tanks. Quantity is a quality onto its own. Some countries also keep their 40's and 50's era MBT's mothballed or as "support tanks" . Speaking of WWII designs. I believe the German MG3 general purpose machine gun is directly derived from the infamous MG42 used in WWII. I read somewhere that the "Yugoslavs" (collective name for the now independent republics) stockpiled a lot of these from their occupation by Nazi Germany and kept using them in their armed forces well into the 1980's. So by the time their civil wars started in the mid 90's a lot of people brought out their moth-balled MG42. From reports it appears as if the MG42 was as deadly in urban combat in 1994 at it had been in 1944. The Oerlikon 20mm cannon was designed in 1937 and it still seen in wide us today 85 years later. The famous M2 Browning heavy machine gun is still effective today almost a century after its initial design. So like I said, some "WWII-era" design still provide a good level of mobility and firepower to be a threat to an enemy - especially one which doesn't have that much modern anti-tank weapons. Oh, and from what I've heard *even* if these old wolves get knocked out by an rpg quite a few of them can be repaired and put back into action. I suppose whether or not these countries have a lot of "disposable tank crews" plays a part too. Patton certainly counted on that during WWII when he insisted on all production being focused on the Sherman tank knowing that he could afford to lose quite a few crews with repaired knocked-out Shermans.

    It's about knowing how and _where_ to use a certain tank model. The turkish army used Leopard 2A4s in Syria - in close quarter combat situations. The 2A4 is an older Leopard model but still a pretty good tank. There's one thing to know: do not get close to good old stuff like an RPG-7 or you're getting into trouble. The turkish army ignored that and... lost many tanks and their crews.

  • @davidh.6930

    @davidh.6930

    2 жыл бұрын

    well tanks are not made for close combat situations, any tank is a compromise. The top of a tank is usually not heavily protected. THe A4 can withstand frontal hits of an RPG7 several times even the sides are well protected against it but as soon as you get to the top or the back of (basically any tank) and land a hit tanks are ot of comission. In close quaters fights tanks are usually defended by an infantry team. they defend the tank against siding the Tank is a moving coversystem for the infantry team. if you deplay any tool of war outside its field you make it vounerable if you dont account for this vounerability you lose your tool

    For me its always been about real time trials and evaluation example the Israeli Arab wars gave the centurion top marks and proved that numbers never really mattered when going up against inferior tanks , more so when it comes to accurate rapid rate of fire on the move and at long range like the Gulf wars , with the added bonus of being able to fight through thick smoke and at night . and again , quality over numbers , example the battle of 73 Easting .
