Most Epic Maui Whale Watch EVER - part 2

Filmed off of the coast of west Maui’s Lahaina Town, this video was captured from a 10 foot zodiac boat on an iPhone and a GoPro and is one of the closest encounters we’ve ever seen on film!
If you plan to travel to Maui, Hawaii, from the period of mid December to mid May, you’re just in time to witness the Aloha State’s favorite time of year: whale season. The 5th largest species of whale in the world, these majestic humpbacks make their annual journey from the shores of Alaska to Hawaii each year in order to mate, give birth and nurse their young in the warm, shallow waters surrounding Hawaii. On Maui in particular, humpback whales particularly seem to love the shallow and protected Au’au Channel, which lies conveniently between west Maui and our neighbor island of Lanai.
While chasing after humpbacks is strictly prohibited, it’s a truly memorable experience when they take the time to approach you instead! You can see these stunning creatures during whale season on Maui on one of many popular whale watching tours, whether by boat with Kai Kanani and Redline Rafting or by outrigger canoe, stand up paddleboard or kayak with Hawaiian Paddle Sports and Maui Kayak Adventures. Additionally, you’re often even lucky enough to spot them from shore while lounging at the beach! Just remember to always pull over, park and get out of your car if the sudden urge to whale watch while driving hits.
When viewing them from the water, you may even get lucky enough to hear the males as they sing, and witness the many playful behaviors they exhibit on the surface of the water, including fluke up and down dives, blowing, pec and tail slapping, spy hopping, head slapping and breaching.

Ive whale watched in Hawaii 3 or 4x. It was the most remarkable experience ive ever had. I love it. I think they know theyre being watched and put on a show, one came so close I touched it. So awesome
A group of us were watching with binoculars from I think it is MacGreggor or Mackenna point out of Ma'alae'a on the way to Lahaina. The whale bus hangs out there. Anyway, not much to see until a mom and baby came close in to the cliff. Baby came up & showed its baleen. Mom came up, turned sideways and there was her big eye looking right at us. That's the best I've ever seen, but this was really something. Consider yourself lucky.
7 years ago, my husband and I were vacationing on Maui. We also took the whale watching tour. We were on a 50 foot boat with 5 other watchers and the captain. I leaned over the side of the boat and I was able to touch the whale just as you experienced. The whale was just as curious as we were. It was awesome to be so close to the whale. So few people have experienced what you two and myself went through.

Grade A contact man. I spent three years on Maui and I used to watch that on a regular basis sitting on the beach lot of us take it for granted it's a pretty amazing thing to see.

Gods beautiful creatures so beautiful and graceful. We went on a whale watch in Maui , most amazing trip I've ever taken and i have a recording of them talking to one another, the girl on the boat put the microphone in the water so we could hear them. I was in amazement with my beautiful whales. 😍 😊
He was saying "Hey could you give me a hand and pull off these barnacles?" I would have reached out and tried to get a full of them off of him.
That was AMAZING!! This is definitely on my bucket list !!

Don't expect to see whales that close! It can happen, but it's rare!
Man I hate that those barnacles grow on the whales like that. I'd like to spend the rest of my life scraping them off.

I read on another KZread viedo that whales sometimes get that close because they want us humans to scrape off the barnacles. Almost like they are asking for a back scratch. 😀

That was definitely epic! It was almost like being on the boat. I've always wanted to see them up close, and thought I'd finally gotten my chance last January, on a trip to visit family in Maui who were living there at the time. Got off the plane, went to bed, and the next morning was making arrangements to fly back to Oregon with the whole family after finding out my brother's baby had stage 4 cancer. I never got the chance to set my feet on the sand. :( Unfortunately, I don't know when I'll be able to afford Hawaii without the free stay. At least I know who I'll hire for whale watching if I do!
Every time I see a whale video like this I am like "If I were there, I'd be in that water. No way I am letting this experience pass me by! Swim with the whale!" :)

When the whale was extending his pectoral fin to you ~ I wish you would have had your gloved hand ready to pet him. It's hard to balance: taking pictures - vs. video- vs. being in the moment & interacting- moments. Looks like an awesome whale watching experience overall.

Unless you’re involved in legitimate scientific research, you shouldn’t attempt to touch a whale (or any marine mammal). In many waters, human-whale interactions are regulated by law. You can’t prevent a whale from approaching you, but you can control your own behavior. www.fisheries.noaa.gov/topic/marine-life-viewing-guidelines

Beautiful. I hope you didn't purposefully ride up to it I'm sure you know that is not allowed. But of course if a whale swims up to you that's different.
Were you allowed to get close to the whales? I read that you shouldn't be within 100 yards of the Humpback whale.
