Striving for perfect arrow flight is what I have taken away from this series as Aaron mentioned. That will be my main objective and what Ive noticed through all of this is, with great arrow flight comes better penetration as well. Incorporating the other points into my setup as well, THANKS THP !

Its funny because I thought you guys were exaggerating about the way bow shops react when you try to switch to high foc arrows, but I saw it first hand this week. They don't want you switching because it doesn't sell bows, and it doesn't sell packs of mechanical broadheads. Their focus is higher fps so that you can shoot a more level shot. Basically make up for people not knowing how to shoot. You guys are just more confirmation for me to go to this. 42lb draw,27 inch length.

I think people believe lighter, faster arrows are simply the result of archery evolution. But for 100’s of years, traditional archers instinctively gravitated toward heavier high FOC arrows. That was back before money was involved and effectiveness was the only parameter. The big bow companies know if people buy into the speed craze, they’ll constantly upgrade for the latest and greatest model bow. You’ve gotta ask yourself, what motivation led to the development of lighter faster arrows? Was it lethality, or profitability?

I've been watching the Ranch Fairy for more than a year, now. Everything that he has laid out on high mass/high FOC has made complete sense. Yet, my hunting arrows are 455g including the 125g Montecs with an FOC of around 12% (27.5"DL, 55# DW). I've been watching THP easily as long, perhaps longer. Your interest in TRF and work with him have made me question my current set up. Still, "I will be good with my equipment" has been my attitude. Until, that is, I watched a 2016 MWWT where Zach puts a great shot on a deer that runs 200+ yards with a "porcupine quill" sticking out of its side. The shot was a good shot! But the outcome was less than ideal. Stripped my arrows bare. Just ordered 125gr inserts from Ethics Archery (and yes, I mentioned the Ranch Fairy). I will be bare shaft/nock tuning and searching for another broadhead to shoot. As Jake essentially said: I don't want the mistake to be the equipment that I choose to use. Absolutely agree! I have an ethical responsibility to the animal I hunt, to the hunting community, to the non-hunting community and to myself to shoot the most lethal arrow I can. I've been hunting for 2 years thus far and have passed up 5 opportunities because "the shot was not there." When the shot finally presents, I want to trust that the equipment I use is more than capable of working for "Plan B." Thanks to THP, TRF and the members of the Ashby Foundation for the great discussion of this critical topic.

I started thinking about going heavy after trying out my dad's 145gr fixed heads that he keeps as backups for his crossbow. I was impressed at how deep they penetrated on a block target, but I hunted with 100gr mechs last year and had two fail IN THE QUIVER. Made the call right then and there that I was going fixed. While I was looking at broadhead reviews, the THP hog hunt with Ranch Fairy came up. I knew I was on to something with those 145s, but now I know I'm headed down the right track. I'm too crippled to track a deer more than 100 yards. The closer to my blind I can anchor that whitetail to the ground, the better.

1st step-perfect arrow flight achieved, 2nd step an arrow/insert/ broadhead trio with integrity, 3rd step your setup is quiet & your mindset is about what happens on contact with the target for a lethal & humane kill. We have months to prepare & an obligation to fulfill. Where I'm @ there is more deer per square mile than 25 years ago but shot opportunities have decreased due to more roadkill animals than ever. I sure was glad to see a buck I passed on in 2018 last Sunday bedded as I scouted from the road. With the best days still ahead I know that this 5 year old buck is #1 on the list & my setup is better than it was the 1st time around when his antlers didn't match his body like they do now.

Technology came a long way but simple still works just fine.

THP and Ranch Fairy my 2 favorite KZreadr's, wish this great wealth of knowledge was around 40 years ago when I first started bowhunting, it would have saved me some heartaches. Arrow length has an important part in achieving perfect arrow flight, surprised I haven't heard much said about it. I'm wanting to shoot a 315 grain single bevel broadhead this season, so I started testing with a full length (31" 300spine)arrow yesterday.(27.5" DL and 57# DW) 31" was to weak, cut down to 30" still to weak, testing 29" today and getting close, probably only cut 1/4" off if 29" doesn't get the results. Final adjustments can be made by turning bow poundage up or down few pounds. Point is; there is a correct length of arrow for every tip weight, picking the right spine keeps it usable for my draw length. I know it's stupid way to tune, but it works for me. Goal: 650 grain total arrow weight and 25% FOC

My system now favors shooting a deer that is close quartering towards me. Going in high but well under the spine through the thoracic cavity & exiting through a much easier low ribs hole right behind the opposite shoulder. I've had the last couple go down feet not yards away. Both 11 yards away & I'm up in a 🌳, Always. Watched another video on TV this morning of a late season hunt & the guy gave the deer 14 hours. Why? Cuz the entrance & exit r nowhere near the thoracic cavity. Everywhere I hunt I can hear coyotes late in the season. 14 hours is not an option which means I have to be both lethal & ethical as posdible.

I just don’t have the spare funds to completely switch over. But you best believe I will begin the changeover to adult arrows in the future once I can afford to do so. Can’t say enough good about THP. I really feel like they do the best with learning and explaining what they learn compared to any other video hunting platform. Thanks to all of the folks that keep learning and sharing their knowledge!

Hey Guys , This is all great and I am currently shooting a 635 grain arrow / broadhead at 250ish.. I can squeeze a little more speed, but the issue become trajectory. 250FPS vs 275FPS is considerable on the flight path.. A missed animal has the same outcome recovery wise !

Good discussion. Thanks. What isn’t being brought up is we aren’t all shooting critters at a bait pile. We are shooting animals that can show up anywhere. A “target archer” realizes sometimes plan b is that you got the distance wrong. Is a 650g arrow in the back straps better than a 450 grain arrow in the top of the lungs? If you only shoot to 30 yards no big deal. If you shoot longer range some compromise might be a good idea.

Hey, I am as well. Still struggling to find the right arrows. I'm thinking Easton Hexx FOC's w/.260 spines, tuned knocks, 2"fletching at 29" w/70lb draw and of course, 150 grain Stinger Killer Bee broadheads plus brass insert, making 240ish grains up front. My goal is to have a clean as a kill as i've had with a .270 rifle. Hope all goes well for you!

I shot a 515 grain micro that performed well with a high quality head. This year I'm shooting the Valkyrie system with thd 570 grain micro setup. Very interesting results in the backyard so far. I won't be shooting 267 feet per second @ 62 lbs. but the testing is going very well. 🤩

Wow Great video. Ashby has so much undeniable data. So good to finally get the word out. Hope people latch on n steer the industry in a positive path instead of all the junk out there. There’s a bunch. Looks great in the package and is ok in a perfect shot but what happens when the shot isn’t perfect? So much out there industry driven that is seriously just garbage.

26:35 This is where I have been, and I think MOST bowhunters have been since the introduction to mechanical "broadheads" and newer fast bows. I always equated speed with penetration, which works in the rifle world, but doesn't necessarily cross over to the bowhunting world. I'm glad I found Ranch Fairy and THP and I'm excited to move over to the before BC crowd and start shooting heavy arrows. The research is there, its just breaking through the powerful propaganda of the commercial bowhunting community that sometimes just wants to sell you something new. Time to go get the adult arrows and hunt.

Yes, lethality is everything. Large wound channel is everything. Being able to re-use a broadhead after cleaning, sanitizing the arrow & touching it up in a couple of minutes with a good duo of DMT diamond sharpener.

Great video. Thanks for covering the practical application for us hunting whitetails and thin skinned game. You don't need a 1000gr meat hammer and RF does not preach that, just bump it up. Get over 500gr and flying perfect with quality components. Like he said, you owe it to the animal and hunting season for most folks is short, make it count when you send it.

G5 Carbon steel fixed blade this year. They cut on contact. Every time I touch one I bleed. 430 grains through a new Morrell Crossbow foam target with the G5 3 blade practice heads. Done with expendables, bounced one off a turkeys back this year, 2 3/8" NAP. They come dull and they don't sharpen. It was a perfect shot, went in his back, took out the lungs and heart, he only took one step, but it bounced out. I think the feathers are layered so heavy at the angle it's like hitting a pillow and the blades don't cut. No way would I use one on a deer.

  • @timbow50
    @timbow502 жыл бұрын

I've been arrow killing deer for over 35 years. I've always used two blade double bevel edged heads of one brand or another. I remember hitting the front leg bone a couple times and not getting a pass thru, but usually there were pass through. Way back we didn't weigh fricking arrows we just shot them. After many years now of understanding arrow builds I use a 425-450 grain arrow. I get pass through hits on deer very easily. Hogs are mostly not 100% in that arrow is sticking in the ground but mostly hanging out thefar side. But I only drawing around 55-57#'s @ 27 1/2" too.

I shot whatever dad gave me because I figured he knew best. Lost my first archery deer...a 10 pointer at that, with a rage mechanical. Yes, it was quartering to and I should have waited a few steps. But watching about heavier arrows makes me think about switching. We think my broadhead got stuck in his shoulder blade bc it snapped off inside the deer, which shows me that its some cheap metal. I bought some g5 monetecs and definately going to sharpen them after the out of the box paper test🤦‍♀️kranked the bow up to 60lbs and now trying to learn about heavier arrows! And of course binge watching The Hunting Public! Great content!
