Most Canadians ignorant of Air India bombings, nation’s deadliest terror attack: poll

June 23, 2023 marked the 38th anniversary of the deadliest terror attack on Canadian citizens in the country’s history.
But a new poll has revealed Canadians know little about the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism and the Air India bombings it was created to honour.
On June 23, 1985, 329 passengers and crew, 268 of them Canadians, were killed when a bomb went off on Air India Flight 182. A second bomb killed two baggage handlers in Japan. Both attacks were tied to a B.C.-based terrorist group seeking an independent Sikh state in India.
As Global's Paul Johnson reports, a new poll suggests people are woefully ignorant about the worst mass murder in our country's history.

Brian Mulroney (Conservative) was the prime minister at the time and it was he who offered condolances to India, when most of the people on that plane were Canadian citizens. Many levels of police dropped the ball. This has nothing to do with Liberals or Global. It has to do with a bomb being placed in an Air India 747, flight 182, which exploded off the coast of Ireland on June 23 1985, killing 329 people. Let us never forget them.

Majority of Sikhs living in Punjab migrated to India from Pakistan in 1947 because, after partition, Muslims started killing them, raping their women, and looting their properties. India welcomed the Sikh refugees coming from Pakistan. In the article of partition signed by leaders of both countries with Britishers, it was promised that both countries would protect the minorities and allow them to live in their homes. They were given agricultural land to start their new lives without any discrimination. After establishing themselves in India, they asked for a Sikh majority state from Punjab by dividing the Hindu majority state. A new state was formed in 1966. Their political leaders started an armed struggle in the 1970s with India to establish a Sikh homeland afterward. They killed more than 30,000 innocent Hindus in Punjab by hijacking buses in rural areas or by bomb blasts in busy markets and asked Hindus to leave Punjab or be ready to die. In turn security agencies killed the same numbers of armed Khalistani Sikhs to establish peace in Punjab. This is a warning for Canada and its political leadership that Khalistani will be the same in Canada. The most unsafe city in Canada is now Surrey, the Khalistani epicenter, thanks to the Khalistan drug cartels.

Even back then, the reception from the government and the people were luke warm. The RCMP botched the investigation, only one man served time and most Canadians just brushed it off as some political scuffle that got nothing to do with them, Indian government agencies warned Canada about the chance of an attack and asked to tighten security which all went to deaf ears, it took almost 20 years for Harper to acknowledge how this was not given the importance it deserved, end of the day people like me who are proud Canadians would always be seen as second hand citizens in this country unfortunately so I am not surprised that no one knows about the biggest terrorist attack in Canadian history that killed a few hundred Canadians.

@CW-rx2js I don't make the media silly. Of course ppl know about 911 because it was all over the news, and was used as an excuse to literally invade another country that had nothing to do with it for over a decade, which our country also got dragged into. It also happened on your soil, not off the coast of Ireland. WW2? Was a literal war. The India Air flight, on the other hand, was probably buried in the back of the paper as a foreign news story few read. And I was 2 years old when it happened. So of course I didn't hear about it. Until now. Not sure what point you're trying to make about Canadians here. I'm sure you don't hear about all kinds of things either, I'm not out here attacking you for it.

It's been 40 years. Most Canadians weren't even born or of adolescent age back then. And on top of that, as sad as it sounds, these Canadians killed were all Indian emigres on an Indian jetliner off the Irish coast. It's not really something that concerns most Canadians.

not to criticize but I remember the event but it was so long ago its not really something Id even think about today thats not to down play it in anyway just so much has happened between then and now and the media drives what is the latest thing over and over like the sub on the titanic dont wish they had died but you beat it to death why would people remember a trauma in later years there has been 9/11, lockerbie bombing just off the top but their details are faiding to, sorry just cant remember every thing because you think we should. to be honest dont really like thinking of those things so I dont. I do find it discussing that you try and imply this was about race Indians and their descendants are widely accepted by all Canadians I know they are now fully integrated into our culture . Those most affected will remember for generations and that is how most things survive may they rest in piece

The reason it's being highlighted is because Trudeau supports these terrorists and Canadians need to know that. There's a reason these people are called terrorists.

Most Canadians are also ignorant about the Godhra communal riots in which over 2500 people were brutally ethnically cleansed in Gujarat. Perhaps a report on that would also do justice to its victims.

That's not something that Canadians should be concerned with. But to bring some basic common sense, awareness, and history back into the classroom instead of gender ideology and other crap wouldn't be too much to ask.

𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲? The still, vegetative and animate levels of nature are the only ones in a state of balance, because they have no free choice. They make no decisions as to whether they should behave one way or another, but they behave according to their inborn nature. We people, however, act according to our decisions that are higher than our inborn nature. We thus use these levels of nature-still, vegetative and animate, which are below our human level-egoistically, bending them however we wish for personal benefit. We thus destroy and empty the planet, plant life, animals, and eventually also people, due to the egoistic way we relate to each other and nature. The system we live in was set up so that we reach a state of mutual consideration, encouragement and support. That is the key to entering into a state of balance with nature. By acting contrarily, with calculations of self-benefit overriding those of benefiting each other and nature, we then knock ourselves out of balance with nature. Then, we experience this imbalance as suffering on personal, social and economic scales, and also as ecological blows, whether it be earthquakes, floods, wildfires, pandemics and several other phenomena that we call “natural disasters.” The more we head into the future without transforming our attitudes to each other and nature-from egoistic to altruistic-then the more we will experience our tightening interdependence negatively. However, if we start relating in a considerate, supportive and encouraging way to each other, then we will see how nature also relates positively to us. Accordingly, we will unlock a new balanced, harmonious and peaceful existence.
