Most family doctors and hospital consultants polled by the British Medical Association in 1948 loathed and opposed the new National Health Service - the NHS. As it celebrates 75 years of existence - we find out why GPs and surgeons despised the NHS so much and refused to work inside the state run health system. If the public had not voted with their feet and registered with the NHS, then medical staff could have tanked the whole project.
