I honestly read the majority of Murakami's books, and it always idk surprises me that the ones that get the most hype (or attention in general) are Norwegian Wood and Kafka on The Shore. Especially Norwegian Wood. If you end up reading any of them and have mixed feelings, I highly recommend giving a try to A Wild Sheep Chase or Dance Dance Dance. To me, they stand out the most and I would consider them my favorite one out of all his books. Read it years ago and they still have a special place in my heart, and it really is kind of sad that people don't mention them too often

I hadn't read any Murakami, so I read Kafka on the Shore last year and was so underwhelmed. It's not that it was bad, but also definitely didn't live up to the hype for me, and there were some weird elements in there that I didn't really see the point of in relation to the plot (and I don't mean the literal 'weird' elements; I like magical realism and generally weird books). It kind of put me off reading other Murakami books. But maybe I should give his work another try then, and just go with less 'popular' works.

@@meikusje I think I know exactly what you mean by the "weird elements".. Hm... Obviously, I can speak only from my experience but if you ever still feel like giving a try to Murakami's books, based on this experience alone, I would recommend maybe avoiding Norwegian Wood. Don't get me wrong - Kafka on the Shore and Norwegian are /completely/ different but if you didn't 100% vibe with Kafka you may find it hard to get into (and enjoy) Norwegian Wood. I would still recommend either A Wild Sheep Case or Dance, Dance, Dance. There's also After Dark - it's one of his shorter novels (I think it's less than 200 pages) but I would recommend checking out the summary first to make sure you vibe with the general theme :) (obviously that's just my opinion and thoughts)

I have such a long list of new releases I want to read this year, I already know I won't get round to reading all of them 😂 I preordered T Kingfisher's What Feasts at Night, and Stephen Graham Jones's The Angel of Indian Lake (Indian Lake trilogy #3) though. Aside from those two, I'm also most looking forward to - the new Stephen King story collection (You Like It Darker) - Midnight on Beacon Street by Emily Ruth Verona - The Parliament by Aimee Pakwatka - The Swans of Harlem by Karen Valby

I have so many new releases I'm looking forward to but leigh bardugo's is definitely one of them! I also started reading robin hobb's books this year. I read jade city last year but it sadly wasn't for me, I think I'm just not into this urban fantasy mafia thing :( but it was written really well, I can see why it's popular

the green bone saga has been on my tbr list for at least 3 years now so i decided to make it a priority to finally crack those books. i gotta admit i was a bit intimidated by how highly praised they are (literally never heard anyone say a bad thing about this series) but i'm 200 pages into jade city now and I Get It. i just get it. it's *really* good. i also have the lies of locke lamora on my tbr too. it's gonna be fun to read these in the same year so i can see what your opinion would be like compared to mine. your most anticipated list also sounds fun, gonna check some books out from it, thanks!

Imho good choice to start Murakami with Norwegian Wood! It was the first one I read from him too and I love it, and although a lot of people prefer Kafka on the Shore, it's personally quite low on my list of Murakami books I've read. I much more enjoyed Dance Dance Dance and even his first novels. I love his style of writing but he admittably is very very problematic with depictions of his female characters... It's a long time since I read Norwegian Wood but at least back then I didn't feel as iffy with it.

Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the Rain Wilds chronicles! Also, I'm curious why you only read Mistborn book 1 (or is it also because of the reading order? I thought Warbreaker is only directly relevant to the Stormlight Archive series)?
