Most Amazing Pilot DC-10 Tanker 911 at the Powerhouse Wildfire Fire

The 10 Tanker Air Carrier DC-10 "Tanker 911" in action at the Powerhouse brush fire on June 2, 2013. Tanker 911 makes four consecutive Phoschek drops on one tank, painting a line of fire retardant ahead of the fire. Oh, and TURN UP YOUR VOLUME!
Don't forget to give this video a THUMBS UP!
The DC-10 Air Tanker is an American wide-body jet air tanker, which has been in service as an aerial firefighting unit since 2006.[1] The aircraft, operated by the joint technical venture 10 Tanker Air Carrier, is a converted McDonnell Douglas DC-10 airliner, and is primarily used to fight wildfires, typically in rural areas. The turbofan-powered aircraft carries up to 12,000 US gallons (45,000 liters) of water or fire retardant in an exterior belly-mounted tank, the contents of which can be released in eight seconds. Two air tankers are currently in operation, with the call-signs Tanker 910 and Tanker 911.

Not necessarily. I worked wildand fire for a federal engine and worked around the local air field 10 min from our station. Approximately 50% of the pilots are just experienced commercial pilots. Almost all of the single engine planes are commercial crop duster pilots, a few of which were ex-military (but not necessarily pilots in the military). Slightly higher number of large and massive tanker pilots were military pilots, but still nowhere near the majority suggested. The largest group of ex-mil pilots seems to be helicopter pilots.

I'm seeing a lot of comments on how he "missed the fire." This is because he's not aiming for it. They're soaking the grass and other flammable material ahead of where the fire's expected to go to create a barrier and prevent it's spread. Pretty much all wildland firefighting is this to my understanding, they almost never target the fire where it is, they just pre-emptively douse or slash, or in a few cases even burn (in a very controlled manner) ahead of it to keep it contained, then let it burn out. Once it's seemingly burned out then they "mop up" the burn area and put out any lingering "hot spots." These dumps are exactly where they're supposed to be, I imagine according to some sort of master plan devised by expert firefighters to best contain the fire. It's sort of like war strategy in a way, you don't just go in guns blazing and fight against the enemy in their strongholds, you plan ahead on how to cut them off, create defenses, block their advance, stop their supplies. The fire is on the offense, firefighters are on the defense knowing that if choked off it will burn out on it's own quite quickly - it's own hunger is it's biggest enemy.

Quill Maurer this plane is dropping retardant which is mostly dropped ahead of the fire as it is used to slow a fires progression, but it can at time be dropped directly on to the fire. They do drop water directly on to fire thought, which is usually done with helicopters and sometimes with planes.

Would love to see like a dramatized movie showing the firefighting planning process, we see war movies showing the generals' scheeming all the time, would be cool to see a movie showing, dramatized but realistically, the "war" against a fire from many perspectives, both the action on the ground and in the air, plus the experts analyzing and planning, explaining why they're doing what to contain and stop the fire. What their tactics and strategies are.

Two years later Chuck made history in a jet as the first person to break the sound barrier. Then in 1948 is when Orville died. Wilbur sadly didn't make it past 1912 due to typhoid.

What everyone seems to miss is, in all air tanker operations, right in front of every tanker is a very fast smaller airplane with the Air Attack Boss telling the air tanker pilot where to drop the retardant. All air tankers are stacked at different altitudes and follow the commands of this person for air operations in that area.

You pull so many Gs of Force turning and climbing out away from these large are tankers, you barf every time until you get used to it. That job is really one of a flying air controller. You have to keep track of sometime dozens of aircraft including helicopters. Thanks for commenting. Regards a retired firefighter.

Deena Kingery yes, the dc 10 and the 747 both experience high g force. A 747 drops about 20,000 gallons at a time, retardant weighs 8 pound per gallon that’s 160,000 pounds dropped in about 20 seconds. The plane then has such lift after dropping that much weight that it’s like an elevator going straight up a couple hundred feet in seconds. Ya! It’s a Wilde ride indeed and these pilots are the best of the best.

Why in the world would anybody give this video a thumbs down. There's just nothing there to warrant such a rating. Awesome video. The DC-10 may be gone but it is not dead. I flew in these several times years ago. Air travellers today don't even realize how awesome the DC-10 was to fly in. The cabins were incredibly roomy and comfortable. Unfortunately, the death of the DC-10 was facilitated by 3 main factors. For one, the backup hydraulic system was routed directly next to the main system which made no sense in that if there was damage to the primary system then the backup system would also likely be damaged. The second Factor leading to this aircraft's demise was the mounting of an engine in the tail section. In the event of an engine fire in the number 3 engine, the tail, rudder, and hydraulics could be damaged rendering the aircraft uncontrollable. The third factor was the discovery of a faulty slide mechanism in the hydrolic rudder control system that could Jam and suddenly reverse input to the rudder so if the pilot thought he was turning the Rudder to the left it would actually go the opposite direction. This defect was not the fault of McDonnell Douglas but rather a contractor who made the poorly designed part for McDonnell Douglas. With the exception of the tail mounted engine these problems we're easily remedied but after several accidents involving this aircraft the DC-10 was essentially labeled a dangerous aircraft in the public eye and the model was discontinued in its original form. The now defunct McDonnell Douglas Aircraft company never recovered after the FAA grounded the entire DC-10 Fleet years ago. The Boeing Aircraft Company eventually acquired the remains of the McDonnell Douglas. There are still several operational DC-10s around the world. It is good to see them still flying so many years later.

Bombs explode on their own while water and water chemicals for fire extinguishing weighs more, besides, fighter jets are very fast and maneuverable, but those aren't exactly the traits that fire planes need. They have to be presice, slow while letting the water flow. Read a bit about CL 415, it has the perfect traits of a firefighting plane - can fly so slow when other planes in such speed would crash down, can glide, gather so much water and even change its proppelers position/shape. This show was meant to show firefighter planes, not planes that we would rather like to see, too.

There's a number of reasons. 1) Fighter planes don't fly long missions. They have to refuel often. 2) Fighter planes cannot carry much at all. 3) Fighter planes generally have much higher stall speeds so you have to come in hot and thus accuracy decreases. And no, this is NOT the same as dropping bombs. 4) At the speeds fighter jets would pass when dropping, the retardant would become too dispersed and ineffective. 5) Refitting a fighter plane to do this kind of work would be pointless because of 1-4. Why use a pocket knife to cut a tree down if you have a chainsaw?

That's roughly 70,000 gallons. Or almost 7 times as much as the DC-10 carries. It could leave a hole in the ground where the fire was. In one way or another.

I live in the canyon, a few hundred yards from where this fire started. The drops that are being shown here are on the outside of the mountain range where the Antelope Valley starts. The drops that this pilot made inside the canyon where much more incredible to watch. I was on a dirt road going up one of the mountains watching the fire on the second day and this guy all of a sudden comes over the ridge opposite from me from inside the canyon, he dropped his flame retardant 50 feet off of the ridge line and was flying through smoke. He was so low that I could see the faces of the pilot and co-pilot inside the cockpit as they crested the ridge, and then pulled up and sharp to the left without stalling or being effected by the thermal updrafts. What people don't realize is that the updrafts created in a canyon fire are severe and you can see a flame flare up 200 feet away from you and feel the gust of hot wind hit you a few seconds later. It's too bad there was no footage of the drops inside the canyon.

The pink stuff your seeing is fire retardant, it’s basically fertiliser (urea) +colouring, it slows the advance of an oncoming fire. When you see them drop what looks like water it is 99% of the time a fire suppressant gel, primarily applied directly on top of the fire. I work with these guys+ pilots from Coulson and Conair they are incredibly professional and amazingly efficient, the work these planes put in daily is crazy and the engineers do well to keep each plane in perfect condition without the luxuries of extra engineers, equipment that the airlines have.
