Moss Wall & Pond

My Wildlife Garden.
Listen to BBC Radio Sheffield's The Grow Show where I talk about bringing life back to my barren garden on BBC Sounds: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0f...
My name is George Smallwood. I am passionate about all things wildlife. I live in Sheffield. Previously I lived in a end terrace house where I had a small garden which I transformed into a wildlife oasis. Bird boxes, a stream & pond, a hedgehog house, a bug house fence and a shed that won shed of the year in 2018. I was lucky enough to appear on BBC Gardeners World in 2021. Following such a great response I decided to make a KZread channel to show all we have done and all we are going to do.
We have now moved to a house that has plastic grass and gravel for a garden and zero nature value. This is the journey of bringing it back to life
I also keep bees and decided to make lip balms using all natural ingredients. We're very proud of them and the bees continue to thrive
Thankyou for watching

Hi George, just wanted to say how brilliant i think you're gardening is. I've been wildlife gardening for a few years and i regularly check on You Tube for wildlife garden videos but until very recently none of your videos have appeared in my searches. Having found your channel, and having watched every single video, i can tell you that you are by far my favourite wildlife garden / gardener. I just wanted to encourage you to keep making the videos because you deserve way, way more views and subscribers which i'm sure will come in time. I can't tell you how amazing your garden is and it has really inspired me to take my own garden to another level. Oh, the trellis curtain across the drive was genius by the way ! All the best mate, keep up the great work. Andy, Bournemouth.

I'm on it. That's the back. Got the front which is a respectable size. Lots to do for it since we moved in and had only plastic grass

I will do soon. Not the moss but sneek peak it hasn't been a success. Just can't stop it leaking. New plan though which I think will look really good

What about the timber along the top of your fence? Won’t the constant wetness lead to rot issues? It is quite homely. I agree with your idea of putting plants on the wall to disguise this pipe. Or wrapping the pipe in moss. It is my favorite, those planting baskets one lines with coir sheets, fills with potting medium, tucks in and plants as suits the situation (I’d use moss from the sidewalks.) Sculpture is a lovely way of concealing pipes, but I get it; your project must tick your boxes. I love ❤️ the soothing sound of moving water, and the beauty of copper. Imagines copper pipe, branching several times, like cleaning in a leaf, and then, with a little bend for a minute, cook, which overflows against the wall. Would that exposure to copper discourage moss formation ?

Hi George I am glad you covered the bottom with rocks because there is no such thing as a safe pond for young toddlers, babies have a reflex that means they will relax in very cold water and can drowned if their face is in an inch.

That's ingenious. Lovely sound and a few ferns growing and moss it'll be so natural. Love it.

Will you select and place a moss, or are you just making an inviting place for moss to arrive naturally like you do for your bees?

If it's not put on the water will soak through the wall and drain the pond. Moss grows anywhere damp so should be ok
