Mosquitos And 24 Hour Daylight / Solo Overland Adventure Documentary

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video covers my solo two week trip up through South Lappland into the Northern part of Sweden in my Jeep Cherokee XJ. The summer is short in the north and the mosquitoes, flies and daylight hours can make for an interesting experience if you don't mined getting bitten.
This video is about 2.5 hours long in a documentary format so you can have it on in the background while you pack your own gear for a trip.

    I originally posted this video on my other outdoor channel in a series of four videos but thought it would be relevant on here for those of you who are only subscribed to this channel. I have combined all four episodes into one. I spent the winter making some changes to the Jeep XJ and simplifying the overland setup. I spend ten days camping, fishing and touring Northern Scandinavia using Gaia GPS to navigate forest and terrain roads and I cover total of approximately 1500 kilometres. Thanks for watching!

    @@WorkshoptoWilderness All good, subbed to the channel too. Great stuffs. HAH! The XJ is going great inside of my head, I just haven't bought one yet LOL, it's due anytime now, I'm literally just waiting for the right XJ or WJ to hit the market at this point. Yeah, I'm for sure super excited to get one and start building on it. Åsele, that's awesome, I actually wanted to move far up north - Gällivare. However my girlfriend backed out of it and didn't want to, so that's how we ended up here. It's all good tho, epic fishing in Kolbäcksån and nature reserves everywhere, and fairly close to pretty remote places. Definitely a goal for me to do some exploring in the future up around your area in the north, with my fishing gear anc cameras. Keep the good content coming!

    @@jacobh9283 Ah nice, I think your in a good place. I drove up near Gällivare last year, its beautiful but the winter is long enough here in Åsele. Its started to warm up now so it's great to be out. Good to wait for the right car to come along. Better to get one in decent condition. My wife has a 96 zj in good condition but its a 5.2l v8 so not the best overlander given how much it drinks. Its super cheap to tax though hahaha! Crazy how my little diesel costs four times more. Patrols and land cruisers are definitely solid choices 👌I will keep my eyes open for you.

    @@WorkshoptoWilderness Cheers! Yeah, the winter is very long.. For sure! My gf is a doctor and applied for a job at the hospital in Gällivare, I'm super happy afterwards we didn't do it, given the Covid outbreak that happened up there. It's on my bucket list of places to visit! But before that, I really wanna explore Jämtland - supposed to be a lot of great fishing there. Yeah it's bonkers innit... Damn it! How are you guys liking it in Sweden this far? How come you chose Sweden? I'm a native swede, but lived in Poland for 7 years running my business and so on, moved back home when covid hit... Made it out of Poland on the last ferry before borders shut down. It's INSANE how much I missed Sweden for nature alone, just being able to fish wherever I want and not the mention the peace and quiet.. My dogs loves it too.

There are various ports in the back, 4 USB and 2 12v along with an 3 meter auxiliary line for the diesel heater and mattress inflator. I'm fairly sure they never offered this engine commercially in the states. Perhaps there are some here and there, but it wasn't rolled out like it was here. If it was, then they would exist in greater numbers. It wasn't legally allowed to be soled in the USA for very long as its emissions are off the chart by US standards. VM attempted to design another engine for the Liberty, a 2.8CRD, and even that isn't up to regulation.

    The older style cylinder heads on the engine were prone to cracking. I have newer ones on there now and they are fine but when it was first released 30 odd years ago it was a problem. Been looking on line and some of them are crazy money. I know you get what you pay for but some companies I feel are just hyping up the brand name and I’m sure the leds themselves come from the same factory in China. Thanks 🙏 can’t wait for the next video sir.

  • @WorkshoptoWilderness

    @WorkshoptoWilderness

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi, they are great inexpensive vehicles for this kind of thing. I think there are two ways to go. Find one bone stock and as clean as possible or buy one that's already modified and correct the wear and tare it has faced from its previous excursions. If you choose the bone stock rout then check for corrosion under the jeep around the frame rails and floor pans. Its normal to see some rust but holes mean its just the beginning and it will need some work. Also be prepared that it will probably need its suspension replaced if you want to run a larger tire and get some lift. If you buy one already lifted or modified then its good to always look under the jeep. Under the jeep is where the work is as they can look washed and clean but be bad underneath. Check the shocks for oil leaks around the seals where the piston goes in, look for differential leaks at the pinion seals. Dont worry about a little oil around the diff plug. Check the ball joints and tie rods at the end and see if the rubber boots have split. If they have and they look old the joint will have most likely been exposed to water and need replacing. Look at the u joints on all the drive shafts and just move the shaft with your hand while looking at the joint. If it clicks and moves a little its most likely worn and will need replacing. You can do the same with the u joints on the axle shaft at the front tries. Move the tire like your pushing the jeep back and forth and see if you have excessive play. Also what you can do is open the doors and hold them at the top and bottom and try to move them up and down. This is to check the wear on the hinges. If there is a lot of play they new hinge pins must be installed. Its a hell of a job as I did all four doors. This sounds like a lot and there is more but its things like this you are better off knowing before you buy it and you can come across more knowledgeable to the seller and bring them down on price

Thanks again

    @@martinnairn8091 I knew nothing until I started working on my own cars. It will save you a lot of money in the long run and you will also get great enjoyment out of it so I would say its definitely a good thing to get into. It will obviously cost money the more tools, parts and things you do but tools tent to keep there value and build up over time. The LR 2 is also a great vehicle. Its advantages will be internal space as the back is much more roomy than the xj. Its also more comfortable inside. The xj is a great vehicle also, simple, robust and excellent offroad when equipped. It is a un vehicle which makes it lightweight but if you intend to put 35x12.50r15 tires on and a big lift you will need to strengthen that frame with a stifferner kit from the USA. Its not actually a hard job if you can weld but this would not be necessary on the lr2 as its a tub on frame design and ultimately stronger off the shelf in terms of its frame. There is a lot to consider and both are good choices for cost and cuztomisability.

    @@martinnairn8091 I think it depends on where you live. If your UK based then then lr2 will be cheaper to modify and parts should be readily available. If your in the USA then the xj is probably the choice for aftermarket part support. You will have everything available to you and the prices are pretty good. Personally the xj is easier to modify than the lr2 as it has a leaf sprung rear and its very simple underneath. The axles are Dana so you pull the covers without having to remove the prop shaft. I think the lr2 is a fantastic 4x4 and also great to work on. I have more experience on XJs so my knowledge is better on them but all older 4x4s are similar really with solid axles and mostly mechanical parts so whichever one you go for im sure it will be great
