Mosquito Helicopter XET Start Up And Cockpit Flow

Become a MojoGrip MVP mojogrip.net/mvp
More on the Mosquito helicopter here www.composite-fx.com
Still at Composite FX. In this video we get a brief run-through on how to operate the Mosquito helicopter. We do a cockpit flow, run up and startup of the turbine engine.
In the aircraft, You have your control stick, also known as the cyclic which is used to control the forward, backward and left to right movements of the aircraft. Also you have your collective handle bar which is used to gain lift all descend. The collective bar is also attached to the throttle.
In the panel, this helicopter is equipped with an MGL electronic flight information system. Here you can read and get all the data for your engine. You have a master switch on the lower right hand of the pilot.

    First, this turbine Mosquito may just be the ultimate expression of flight. It's what we all dream of, but- is somewhat outside of the fixed wing focus of most beginner pilots. The concept of lifting off, hovering and controlled flight in it is straight up AWESOME. Wierd, but, practicing power off landings (auto rotate) in a $50k experimental scares the life out of me! So, as exciting, cool and great as it seems- I'll watch you, OK? Apparently, middle age and self preservation prevent me from truly considering a Mosquito, Mike. Obviously, thank you- I'll watch every minute you post up on it!

    Honestly- a personal helicopter with enough power & strength (Mosquito XEL) is incredibly tempting. Heck, it even sounds right, and, it definitely looks awesome, but, i think the glide ratio is, umm ZERO. Thanks to Mike's interest, I checked out some other videos of them in flight- very agile and capable in the right hands. I get completely stuck with the possible falling out of the air- OK- stopping descent using hard or immovable objects- i.e. the ground. Parachute? Airbag? I even watched auto- gyro vids in an effort to overcome it- I'm just too old. Sooo tempting, but... I sense that I'm gonna have to watch you & Mike post up videos, maybe even come & watch some time, but, gravity, fear of heights, an over-developed sense of self-preservation, total wimpiness prevent me from flying one- under any circumstances. Promise to cheerlead from the sidelines tho in my ground based lawn chair, OK? I DID a helicopter trip into the volcanos in Hawaii years ago... I'm out. More seat time for you tho :)

    Actually if you get the proper training and understanding how to maintain them not any more risk then owning any type of GA aircraft notice how I say GA reality is all GA has some risk try to manage it with proper training. The cost and build time is what is really good the problem I see is getting a PPL rating for helicopters according to website $15k is what they charge. If you register the thing with the FAA can land at most airports. Autorotating is safer then trying to find a place to land a Cessna. You should go take an intro flight training and have them do some auto's and explain how it works.

  • @DCGULL01

    @DCGULL01

    Thank you blastman8888- I agree wholeheartedly. I was so interested, I did a ton more research, watched a lot of auto-rotate vids (and Mosquito's specifically), so, now I 'get' the over rev clutch, inertial rotor mass concept and just how much energy gets stored. I'm a strong project starter, but, get easily distracted on long ones, so, I would have to buy used, or, mostly complete (at a steep discount either way!). I thought it was less expensive if you have your PPL (more like an added certification + training + rental)- because that's real money as well. In my research, I noted a 500 TBO, but- unsure of what's involved, or, costs. Fixed wing is an expensive hobby, even after the hump of obtaining your PPL. Buying is whole new world of cash flow, even if you are super careful. Apparently, I'm now both a wimp & to Yankee (cheap) to consider a Mosquito. But, hey- it was a ton of fun learning about it & fun to dream about. I guess I'd like to see an R22, or, a Schweitzer 300 in action- just to get a feel for noise, rotor wash, size in person...

    You should get a couple hours in a helicopter. The R-22 is probably the cheapest aircraft to learn in. Gives you a whole new perspective to aviation. Sort of like beating the air into submission. I have a little over 2000 hours in Huey's and Blackhawks. It is a very versatile aircraft but so expensive to operate.

    It feels so weird that when I watch any kind of video that involves heights in or on buildings my fear of heights kicks in and freaks me out big time. However I can watch videos about flying all day long and not feel a single ounce of fear.

    Cool! That small jet engine is an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) used to start the hydraulic system in a CH-47 Chinook helicopter. Once the engines of the Chinook are started and running, the APU is turned off.
