Mosaic tile installation in shower by tile man mike

www.tilemanmike.com
This is a 2x2 porcelain mosaic for a shower. Smaller tiles (6x6 or less) are typically used for showers with a drain in the center. However, you can use any size tile (with correct DCOF-Dynamic Cofficent of Friction rating-slip resistance) when using a linear drain system. Linear drains are set where floor tile meets wall tile (an edge)

@@gunslinga7077 he's not crazy at all. In the video, Mike was replacing floor tile, but if he was tiling the wall too, he would have done the floor first and then lapped it with the wall tile.

@@CPT-Blacktooth Yep. I put a ledger up and stack my first row right above the skirt row. I mortar in that first row, the floor, the floor tiles on the outer edge of the curb, and the curb with one batch of thin-set. Then I let all that cure and put some plastic down on the pan and curb to protect it while I finish the rest of the wall. It's so much easier and you don't have to worry as much about dropping thin-set. The last part should always be the skirting. Cut your skirt pieces to fit, put a bead of silicone at the edge and then back butter the last final pieces. Viola.

It's also more waterproof to do floor first and then lap it with the wall tile. I always put a bead of silicone (same color as grout) at the base as well.

That's why I prefer round drains so you can adjust the height. Also a square drain can dictate your lay out. And if for some reason later you need to back out the drain you can't. It won't back out, its locked in. Just my 2 cents

You can adjust the height on the square drains as well because it sits on top of the Spud and you just turn it till it's the right height plus the cut time takes a lot less time than a round drain

@@nevinkuser9892 It's simple lapping. Think about the physics of the water. It's coming down the wall and dropping on top of the floor tile instead of on a joint. If that joint fails, water will leak under the tile and the system will fail.

That pan is going to fail. Yo want your wall tiles to sit on your floor. Let your pitch and gravity work for you. With your floor tile butting up to the wall. When the grout lines eventually crack or fail the water will run down under your floor tile.

Personally, I don’t consider 2” x 2” (12x12 mat sheets) that are mostly mono-solid color and non patterned / non imaged tile “mosaic”. In the tile world, a mosaic is defined as an inlay design pattern with tiles smaller than 2×2”. Individual mosaic patterns vary greatly, featuring a multitude of different materials, colors, and tile shapes. Popular materials include glass, natural stone, metal, and porcelain. *Google 2017*

Boy I sure love all these replies and how it gets under your skin but I've been setting tile for 40 years and in 40 years I've never ever had a leak in my showers. I'm certified by the ntca as a master tile instructor so quit with all the hating. This was a very unusual project request via a customer to have balanced tiles around the drain, so we were only able to barely move that full tile under that wall tile. Customer wanted that tile balanced around that drain And gave us those full size tiles around the edge. Pan is sloped so water is managed. there is pebble rock around the drain to keep the mud from getting into the weep holes Just quit the hating

Different strokes for different folks. The question is, Will everyone follow the TCNA guidelines and caulk around that perimeter joint which should really be seen on the wall, not the floor. Never heard of "full tile management before. What do you do when you have to tile the whole house? If you break the tile up at the doorways, I would doubt your layout abilities. Can't make all the walls happy. If you have no idea what the TCNA is, you should learn.
