MORRISON v RUDDOCK (TKO 6) JUNE 10TH 1995

From this fight can see that Morrison's biggest weakness at this point seemed to be very poor stamina. His tiredness at the end meant he looked almost as dazed as Ruddock who had just took a big knock down.

Two of the most dangerous heavyweight punchers of the 90s and my two faves outside of Bowe. Morrison left hook and Rudduck’s “upper cross”.

The "Smash"! That punch was lethal- the Michael Dokes fight proved that. Ruddock put him out COLD and motionlessness for several mins face down. And holy shit did Morrison have a left hook- only a notch below Smokin' Joe Frazier's who I still believe had the best left hook in boxing history. These two guys were monsters in the 90's though. Man I miss boxing from those days.

Ruddick was in his prime and looked exactly the same in his fights following Tyson and leading up to Lewis, and most people were picking him to win the title. He simply got KO'd cleanly by Lewis. Even if He had KO's Tyson in the fist fight the Lewis fight would have ended the same way. IT was simply a clean KO by one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time.

Ron Lipton, the referee, used to spar all the time with Hurricane Carter back in the 60s or 70s. There's a news story out there of him taking on 50 men with a shotgun and his fists. (I don't know if he had another gun. From what I remember, it had something to do with Lipton being Jewish and the guys not liking that. Lipton was a cop back then, just going by memory.) Lipton was a regular on The Cyber Boxing Zone message board, probably the greatest boxing community ever. (Alexis Arguello and other fighters, and others in the know, used to post there all the time before they shut it down.) Anyhow, Lipton was asked why he stopped this fight. He said something to the extent that the hit by Ruddock when he went down was especially hard. (I think he said he saw Ruddock's head bounce off the canvas and may have sometime during this round seen the eyes roll back. Its been years since I read that threat on CBZ board.) A former fighter who didn't want Ruddock to die, that's why he said he stopped it. This is one of the true HW gems of the 90s, and it shows why it was such a golden era for that division.

@@BoxingFightsByGaryWilson He had been taking quite a few clean shots after the knock down, and I think the way his head rocked back violently with a shot persuaded the referee. That said, I think Ruddock could have been alright to go on, but he was tired, not throwing and not stopping much of what Morrison was throwing. The referee was trying to protect Ruddock, and if he hadn't been stringent with standing 8 counts on Ruddock then he would have taken extended periods of punishment from Morrison, so perhaps if the referee hadn't taken that line then Ruddock might have gone down again in that final round.
