I left about 5 yrs ago, never explained to my husband but he found his own way out anyway. He’s going through it now. There should be a group that helps Mormons through the transition out of the church and into society. I was born and raised, it’s hard to leave. Again I wish I had help, I go to a therapist and that is helpful. But former members really understand.

I just want to say I appreciate your podcast John D. and everyone else behind the Mormon stories Podcasts. Also thank you Hannah and Jake for taking time to discuss your experiences.

Thank you. Remembering the elders of the Gothard cult supported bible chapel that called my father and I into a 'disciplinary council' in 1970 over a minor dress code 'violation' event. It was, sadly, a brutally humiliating condemnation for him. For me it was another confirmation of a rising understanding of the toxic nature of the 'church', adding to my determination to give an honest, fact and scripturally based, rational answer and defense of personal choices of what and how I arrived at what I believed to be true and to distance myself from my extremely dysfunction family and any organized religious movements.

You guys are so very brave. To be welling to accept and admit the truth you found about this silly church. It amazes me that people still believe this stuff. They are so afraid to find out information. The church has to be very worried right about now. Information is available for the taking. Don't be afraid to find the truth.

This couple is awesome. I am glad they had a fairly quick transition out of Mormonism. My transition took over 5 years, with at least the first 2 years pretending to be Mormon.

I chose, as a 6 years old, to follow the path that Santa Clause set for me--to be a good boy so I could get some cool gifts. Then I matured and left Santa behind and chose to follow Mormonism---even tho I was BIC! I matured further some many years later and left Mormonism, as I did Santa. Mormons might call that "Eternal Progression"---but ONLY if I had grown up Catholic!!

Robert. everyone gets. to tell their own story. This is theirs. We all react to circumstances differently. Tell us your story Robert I am just as interested in you journey with or without the church.

I really like their tact of simply saying facts/the truth which INFER that the BOM and LDS church is wrong without saying it outright...yet anyone who WANTS to use logic would gather that. To me, if someone isn't willing to use reason, they aren't worth speaking to anyway, so this is always the best tact as opposed to saying "Joseph Smith was a fraud!" for the sake of being argumentative.

Oh that is so funny that you guys got married in the Logan Temple I used to live not even 500 ft away from there. I got in trouble once because I had told someone. That is LDS which I'm not. That the Temple look like a Gothic Castle hahaha. You can probably imagine what I was told LOL

so... I can't figure out if you want to leave the church or you want them to keep begging you to stay. What is it you want? You don't like the church, you don't agree with it, but you want them to apologize to you...for what? For having doctrine or beliefs you don't agree with? Was it originally set up to accommodate you personally? Like the interviewer says at the end: "if you don't believe it anymore, don't plan on attending anymore, what does it mean to leave room for you if you're kind of checked out?..why shouldn't you just disappear and leave it alone, not be a member because you don't believe it and you don't go?"

The point is members are to blindly follow, with strict restrictions and obedience. It is also about the lies members have been indoctrinated to for years. The LDS church is a cult, they will be shamed and shunned by all the good "christians". No judgement there!🤯🤦‍♀️

This really is a GOOD n great couple and shouldn’t be handled like they are by the LDS Church!

If you have decided to never go back to the faith, why put yourself through this disciplinary council? I have never been a Mormon, so I am curious. Why not just ignore the Bishop and go on with your life?

You just hit the nail on the head. These people no doubt have a testimony, love the gospel and then due to their choices go their own way, do not repent/make changes needed to get back on track. So what some used to love they now hate. If they didn't or it was "no big deal" they would do exactly what you just said above. Here is a scripture that talks about this in D&C 121:37-38 specifically 38. 37 ....but when we undertake to cover our sins, or to gratify our pride, our vain ambition, or to exercise control or dominion or compulsion upon the souls of the children of men, in any degree of unrighteousness, behold, the heavens withdraw themselves; the Spirit of the Lord is grieved; and when it is withdrawn, Amen to the priesthood or the authority of that man. 38 Behold, ere he is aware, he is left unto himself, to kick against the pricks, to persecute the saints, and to fight against God..

MEDIABOYZ....So incorrect. Is that how you'd explain the JWs who put themselves thru the comparable meetings with their elders when they're ousted from their organization? You've got your head in the sand sadly seeing as how you cling to Mormon teaching. U/stand though, that in *JOHN 12* , that should you continue to reject Truth, regardless how much truth you hear, you may not be able to accept it. Key in on verses 35-40. I'll pray for you as your pour over the scriptures.

I am not nor ever have been Mormon. Kati Boykin, I would most likely "wave a finger of goodbye" and go my merry way. But I am not everybody. I am sure there are some that hope to not be ex-communicated in order to stay on good terms with their families and friends. The Mormon Church controls everything, including your social life. I am sure there are others that want the bishops and other church leaders to know that they, too, have something to say. These people may need to let the entire church know that everyone has a voice and threats of condemnation can not mute that voice. More than likely there are reasons I have no idea about and can not fathom. I can't say I totally understand but it's not my place to condemn them. But I do support their apostasy as I see no evidence for any deity.

Well, guys, they may be excommunicate you, but at least they won't slit your throats!

The process of a disciplinary council is not secret. What is secret is who is involved. The reason for this is for your protection and privacy. If you want your situation to be public that is your right, but as a Bishop I would never talk about a private matter without permission. I’m so sorry you guys are going through this. The church is true! The people who are leaders in the church are not. I could really care less if you go to church or not. If I went to church for other people or for my leaders I would have left the church long ago. I go to be a better person and to repent of my own sins. However my heart does go out to you guys because you are allowing the adversary to get into hearts and minds. You are missing out on all of the blessings of the gospel. I have been involved in these councils and everyone has been an amazing spiritual experience. Every person has come back to the church.

I don’t think I understand why someone who doesn’t believe in the church anymore wants to continue to be a member. I don’t see a problem with this “disciplinary” action. You have demonstrated you no longer believe and you are attempting to influence others. The question isn’t why are you being disciplined, but why do you want to retain membership in a religion you don’t believe in. I really want to understand this. You are entitled to your own beliefs and doubts, but why do you feel entitled to retain membership in a church you think is false? And why would you want to? I no longer believe in the Catholic faith. Do you think I care if they excommunicate me? It would be ridiculous for me to care. And it’s ridiculous for you to care. It’s not like you can’t get your membership back if you some day have a change of heart. What does membership in a “false religion” mean to you? It’s not as if you can no longer attend church or have LDS friends. What on earth are you clinging to anyway?

Who the hell passes around a can of coke haha, it’s not even against the word of wisdom. I can understand passing around a joint.

Anything with caffeine in it was banned in my family including Coke/Pepsi. My former mother-in-law even considered chocolate to be against the WoW because of the small amount of caffeine that is in it. Some Mormons just take things way further than necessary, I guess because they think it makes them more righteous/obedient or something.

Nobody is really slamming you.

It's sad to see members who are disgruntled with the church. It's not perfect , but that's one thing that astonishes me with lifelong members who discover that, get hurt, get mad, and try to get even. Try getting over it. The church to me is the best way. I take the best from the church and cherish it. if there's something that bothers me I don't make a big deal over it I just leave it behind and consider that God will work it out in its own time. if there something you're unhappy with within the church then why not try to become the very best member that you can be in order to help others who may struggle. I just don't see any good coming from the podcast. I try to remember that every word I say and you say has a ripple effect and this will affect others. and in the end will this really be the answer? will it make you happy? if you think so then it must be... For you. God bless you in all the ways that you go.

D Tuckeroo I was a bit disrespectful in my characterization of an organization you love, but I'm going through my own transition and still have plenty of hurt and anger. it's not easy for any person, whether in or out. Good luck to you though.

As a former member who served a mission, that was pretty stupid of you to knowingly bring a hitman to church and associate with him and their gang. You must like to stir contention. Religious or not I feel it's common sense that there are some people you don't associate with for reasons of survival and safety. Now is the turn for someone to respond with but prophets of old went into enemy lands to teach..

Some people see the church as not 100% true, and feel shame and guilt and depression because they are blaming themselves and feel very alone, this might just be the help they need to strengthen their will to live on. I hope you're not considering this a slam.

People are telling their story. There is nothing wrong with that. If you are not interested in it, don't watch them. For a lot of people hearing these stories has significant value.

These videos do serve a very important purpose. In the church people are expected to all think and act according to the church's teachings ("Group Think"). Many people feel great discomfort as they open their minds up to new ways of thinking and as their thinking and studying leads them to conclusions that the church does not approve of. John Dehlin provides a safe place for people to voice their differences with the church. If you are uncomfortable with it, why do you watch it?

To help others that are going through a situation in which they feel alone. It can feel deeply isolating in the culture so it's nice to have validation

1 John 5:9 "If we receive the witness of men (the Book of Mormon), the witness of God (the Bible) is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son." The witness of God is His Bible that He keeps reliable...the witness of men is the Book of Mormon, not sanctioned by John or God but makes "claims" to be "another testimony of Jesus Christ". God has already spoken through John in the Bible, no second false witness need insert itself over the Word of God. You are asking to be burned in hell-fire for eternity.

Your membership has nothing to do with your heritage. Is there a heritage litmus test for membership? Toward the end you keep saying “I feel like” this and that. There is nothing factual about that. You have rejected your faith and now you want to cling to your membership because of heritage and culture and community. I’m sorry but your membership is not about those things. Look over the baptismal interview questions. That is all it is about. The community is a side benefit for people of faith. I’m starting to question that you ever understood what your membership was about. It’s not a fun club for people with mormon heritage. You still have your heritage. You can still have Mormon friends. You can still attend church, but if you think you have a right to spread seeds of doubt within the church community think again. There are no churches or clubs that allow you to do things like that. Personally I don’t think you understand what church membership really means and this almost 2 hour long interview demonstrates that pretty clearly. I’m not trying to be critical because you left the church and I’m not an apologist. I can admit the Church has issues and it’s critics have some valid points. I didn’t hear many valid points here and you had almost 2 hours to make them. Here’s your point: “I don’t believe the church is true and I believe the church is doing bad things, but I want to retain my membership because I FEEL like it’s my connection to my heritage and community and I have freedom of speech so I should be able to spread doubt within that community all I want”. Super flawed thinking.
