Probably the best pick of the last decade, late-round steals excepted. Not just because of how good he is, but because it was a supposed "reach" that hit. Lots of people (me included) want to freak out when teams take players high, but they generally know a lot more about a player's makeup and ability to improve than the public sphere. Add in that fact that Detroit's system/structure has completely changed since the pick, and it's clear there was a level of foresight when making that decision. They picked the perfect player for a style of hockey they weren't playing yet, but we're planning on it. Awesome stuff.

Nah, Detroit's down late in the game (i.e., time to try stuff). If he stops inside the pass reception, he loses the advantage that he created by building speed before getting the puck. If he just keeps the puck on the forehand/hip pocket after reception, the forechecker can just reach out and dispossess him. By playing the puck like that, he turns a pass that's behind him into a forehand puck at speed with almost zero risk. It's flashy and it's also the best play he can make in that moment.

That fact that he can do all this with ddk just makes me so excited for what he's able to do with a decent partner.

@@maciejczernia7490 Cale’s defense relies on him having the puck on his stick and keeping it out of their zone. McAvoy does it all. Elite from his blue line in, really good first pass, really good offensively, and incredibly physical and impossible to win puck battles against. He doesn’t put up the numbers, but he’s a better all-around defenseman than Makar. Again, nothing against Makar. God-tier offensive play, but gets exposed in his zone - especially when people send bodies in against them. Really all of the Avs blue line shares that flaw. And I think Seider is like a bigger, stronger McAvoy with more chance to jump into the play.

Of course he wouldn't be exclusively taking over half wall duties. Half walls and points tend to switch off often on good powerplays, having two pp qbs on one pp switching off and garnering new looks would be deadly. I think it could be something that could be used here and there to generate some good offense. But for now I still have Mo as pp qb #1 for the forseeable future. He's just too good at it.

  • @Marces993

There is a simple reason why his breakout has changed so much. Because in his early years he was taught to play the puck out over the boards if he is pressured. Young guys in pro leagues are taught to rather play it safe than making mistakes in their own zone. Especially if you play for very successful teams were every win matters. It took time to change that mindset.

I wished he would have fallen to #10 for the Canucks (but I still think Podkolzin will be a good player). Seider was already playing against in the pro against men in the DEL during his draft year and was apparently a go-to defender for his team. If he wasn't German and was maybe playing in the SEL or CHL, he probably would have went #1 overall.
