More science demonstrations please | Ruben Meerman | TEDxQUT
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Ruben Meerman has spent much of his career sharing the magic and wonder of science with school students around Australia. In this talk he illustrates why having more science demonstrations in class is the best way to learn.
Ruben is a surfer with a physics degree and a passion for bringing science education to life. He is a reporter on ABC television’s Catalyst program, a regular guest on ABC3’s Studio 3 and was Play School’s first ever resident. He presented demonstrations on ABC Kids’ Roller Coaster program for five years and appeared on Sleek Geeks I & II with Dr Karl Kruszelnicki and Adam Spencer. He has written four children’s science books and publishes simple DIY experiments and demonstrations for kids, parents and teachers at ABC Science Online.
Ruben graduated from QUT in 1993 and worked in an optics laboratory manufacturing thin film coatings for lasers. He joined the Shell Questacon Science Circus for a year and started performing live science demonstrations in 1995. He hasn’t stopped since then and has now visited more than twelve hundred primary and high schools around Australia.

This is great, this new creative pedagogical way of teaching is quite effective and should be recognised and implemented by every school and learning institute, the more difficult you make the learning process, the more people run away from it... I really enjoyed this video

how to turn that sparkin to a flame is watch/read dr stone and then try to make gun powder but fail to not being able to find sulfur and then make nitroglycerin (just started working on nitroglycerin still need proper equiment(it will be made of soap)(only 12 and parents don't know and legal as long as you don't distribute it ))

Hoping to duplicate a few of these demos for an after school program I'm a part of. I'd credit Ruben of course, but I'm struggling to find thin plastic coated with metal like used in the first demo. He doesn't mention what type of metal coats it, but the cassette tapes just don't have the same flair =/

More science demonstrations and less CRT, far better use of teacher’s time.
Absolutely love what you do, Ruben Meerman. Your style, presentation and passion for the subject is clear and appealing, however, I was disappointed to hear you join the Cancerteering Conmunnity in declaring that we have no idea how to stop cancer. I'm not a physicist but I do know that research HAS got there, but it's far too profitable for the aforementioned to forego their current method of liberating families from their life savings before loosing their loved one - killed by the "cure". This is the reality and the truth is that good scientists are too scared to speak out. There is a community of dead people who found inexpensive ways to PREVENT and ERADICATE the malfunctioning cells. Don't push the over-complicated myth they feed us. Keep it simple. You probably already DO know - intellectually, anyway! (I hope they haven't got to you too.) How many types of cells are in the human body? So how many types of cancer are there? (Answer, less than you think). Also, aren't you AMAZED that they offer kids sick with cancer all the sugary treats they like? Further, did one doctor ask ever "can you tell me about your diet and nutrition?" (??) No. They never did. And in 'some countries' they'll sign you up to their 'program' of poison and radiation so fast you won't have had time to find your title deeds. Not only that, you'll have NO CHOICE but to sign up. The answers are in nature but it's not profitable. (I hope the likes of these thug corporates and their ilk are not the ones supplying your QUT liquid nitrogen.) Bless you for caring about activating the minds of the kids. We need them now more than ever.
