More Japanese Bookbinding Tutorials (finally!)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My last Japanese stab binding tutorial was in 2012... I think it's time for a new one. I'll show you 3 classic patterns: Noble, Hemp Leaf and Tortoise Shell. These methods work great for single sheets of paper, no signatures and no glue required. I like to use them for home printed pages, swatch books and thin paper.

That brings some memories. 10 years ago, I think, I made a noble binded book for my boyfriend at the time. I'm an all diy things and found a tutorial on the internet. I love to make things. The book was full of images with love quotes that I found online. I'm proud of it. It had fake leather and cardboard cover, with noble binding. Sad thing is I do not have any pictures of it.

So pleased to see you've picked up on the Japanese bindings. I've seen your original video and have been searching through KZread for videos on stab binding but none of them are as clear as your one. So you can imagine how pleased I was to get the notification of this new video with 3 styles. Thank you!

Thank you for the amazing tutorial. I just almost finished the noble binding and then realised that I needed more thread because my book is thicker than yours... I'll try now with 7 times the length instead of 5

Love the video! Glad you are updating some of the older videos. I particularly like Japanese binding because I actually find it easier than the other ones which require gluing and signatures. Those are still fun just more fiddly and time consuming 😊🌸 A tip for doing the Japanese binding with thicker paper: you can perforate the sheets about a centimeter below the holes in the spine, and this makes it easier to open and close the book. I did this when making watercolour sketchbooks for my nieces with a plain Japanese binding. The books opened easy to each new page and it had the bonus of them being able to tear out their artwork easily if they wanted to. My paper trimmer comes with a perforation blade so I was able to do it quite easily.

That's probably the only disadvantage of Japanese bookbinding, that you can't make it thick or can't use thick paper, cause it will be hard to turn the pages over. I once tried to make a writer's journal with this method and it was thicker, and the paper was 120gsm. So I had to make lines where to fold each paper. It was a bit better, but still not as good as I would want it to be 😀
