Mordred's Lullaby | Animatic

Фильм және анимация

At last, I've got another one done! This one took a while, as this past month has been incredibly busy for me, and there was a stretch of time when I was without Internet access (and my art supplies, nooo!). Anyway...
In certain adaptations of the Arthurian legend, Mordred is the illegitimate son of King Arthur and his half-sister, Morgana. I've done a little interpretation of my own here.

Now I’m inspired to make a homebrew legendary item. The Bastard’s Blade: Clarent Classified a long sword This sword if found is often mistaken as a flame tounge much to the wielder’s dismay. Those who are aware of the sword’s existence know of it’s troubled and dark history. Once a coronation sword wielded by the greatest of kings the strongest hero of the luck blade, this sword was given its name when Mordred the bastard son of Arthur killed his own father with this very blade. It was enchanted so that any cut made by this weapon would eternally bleed til one’s death. However this blade’s cursed past goes deeper. When Mordred was tried and condemned for the death of his father he was executed with the same blade and Merlin the Wise had sealed Mordred’s soul to the black iron blade. This blade is cursed by his eternal stay seeking the blood of kin and friend along with foe with no difference.

Let's be honest, her hatred for Arthur stems from her hatred for his father Uther, who had her father killed, had Merlin disguise him as her father, slept with her mother, married her mother, and had Arthur(before Merlin decided to abscond with the infant as the price for helping Uther commit rape by fraud).

The Arthurian mythology is so muddled at this point that it's only one writers version. In the original Morgan le fay (the origin of Morgana) just gave up on being evil and ended up becoming good and helping Arthur.

I came back to re-watch this after refreshing myself on some Arthurian Lore and watching Overly Sarcastic Production's summary of the King Arthur Legend as it's changed throughout time. I kind of crack up hearing of Guinevere’s "loyalty" being broken in the song now. I think your depiction of Mordred's youth and how he grew up is amazing and adds a great level of depth to his character still though. :) The design you gave him is probably one of my favourites.

Oh no, this comment is a year late, but Guinevere is only mentioned in the verse ‘your spirit will hate her, the flower who married my brother the traitor’. When she says ‘for you are the proof of how he betrayed her’, she may be talking about herself being the one who was betrayed, since Arthur raped Morgana.

Dumb dumb The song mentions “you are the proof of how he betrayed her loyalty”, it’s a reference to Guinevere, not Morgan. Also Arthur never had sex with Morgan Le Fay in the mythos (she was the lover of Merlin), as it was Morgeuse who was the mother of Mordred, and the sex was consensual to boot as well. The whole idea of Morgan being Mordred’s mother was created for the movie Excalibur so that they wouldn’t have to have both Morgan and Morgeuse. Personally I hate the idea of Morgan being portrayed as Mordred’s mother, because it makes her even more villainous than she actually was in the mythos, and erases the redemption arc she went through in the Arthurian lore; moreover once Mordred starts causing strife with Arthur, Morgan is well and truly back on good terms with her brother, and rescues him from dying by taking him to Avalon to be healed.

J Double C Correction: Mordred was felled by his own lust for power, as Morgan Le Fay was most certainly not his mother (that was an invention for the movie Excalibur). Moreover, Morgan was well and truly back on good terms with Arthur by the time that Mordred was causing trouble, and saved him (Arthur) from dying by taking him to the Isle of Avalon to be healed.

This kinda reminds me of the story of Cu Culain (or however you spell his name). Cu Culain battled and beat his mentor's twin sister, but said he would spare her life if she had his kid (do not ask me why). Aife, the twin sister of Cu Culain's mentor, forbade her son from telling Cu Culain his name, and Cu Culain unknowingly killed his son because of that.

Mordred's always been portrayed as the villain who killed King Arthur, but this gives some insight into why he is the way he is. He was raised by a mother who only saw him a ticket to the throne; he sensed his lack of love from a young age; he was probably tortured knowing where he came from; he was born of incest, so he was probably fragile to mental illness in the first place; Mordred led a short, very sick life. He was probably a much more complex human than he is made out to be.

Yeah, allow me to explain: Mordred was the bastard son of King Arthur and his half-sister Morgana. In some versions, she was raped, in others, she tricked him. Anyhow, she had a son and raised him to despise his father and told him it was his birthright to the throne when really SHE wanted the throne. However, the ending is always the same: King Arthur and his son Mordred die on each others blade.

Okay so why does she say Arthur is a traitor? Also she says he, Mordred, is the proof Arthur betrayed Guenevere's "loyalty" (haha). So first off Arthur slept with Morgan before he was with his wife, as far as I know, and second she slept with Lancelot, and didn't even bear Author an hare, Or did she I don't know? And when she says her son will die returning the birthright Arthur "stole" what birth right did he steal from who. Is she saying because she, Morgan, didn't get the kingdom from their mother? Or is she saying he stole Mordred's birthright? Morgan never had the birth right for the thrown so why is she complaining? Also does this song imply she doesn't even love her son? It's really hard to tell, is she really just okay with him dying after all? At her age it's not like she can realistically have another child by the time Mordred dies. Also why does she say Mordred won't understand the cause of his grief, is she talking about the insect with Arthur and his mother, or is the cause something else? And okay I'm done with all the questions, and just going to say at the end, when her son was dyeing I thought she was going to put the crown on him, in a touching moment, but when she put it on her own head that was a twist and a shock. And made it seem all a whole lot sader. It just seems like in that moment no one loved him and he was just being used. And it's so sad... No one wanted him. He wasn't loved, his father hated him and his mother used him. (sad face) The whole myth and story seems sad in retrospect.

This song is told by Morgana, half sister to King Arthur. Her hatred for Arthur derives from the previous generation, where Arthur’s father killed Morgana’s father, robbing her of her parent. Arthur, later, while married to Guinevere, was attracted to the wife of King Lot sexually, and deceived her into believing that he was her husband, later to find out that she was actually Morgana. She became pregnant with Mordred, and resented him for a long time, because of the fact that he’s a result of incest between half-siblings. Mordred was an antagonist, who hated his father for his sin of adultery and incest, and wanted to seize the throne.

There are multiple interpretations of the tale of mordred, Morgan, and King Arthur just as there are *waaaaay* to many interpretations of the mythos in general. This one evolves around Mordred being a sympathetic antagonist and just a device his mother can use to get to the thrown. Which is kind of weird to me since all the interpretations I’ve heard always have Mordred claiming the thrown while Arthur leaves to get healed by Morgan. But like I said, there are *many* versions. And I don’t think Mordred was upset about him being the result of incest because later, when he’s taken over Camelot, he forcefully marries Guinevere who is Arthur’s wife. So, incest???

Viridian depending on what iteration of the legend this is, this song is more convoluted since in one version, Morgana tricked Arthur into sleeping with her by disguising herself as his wife

I'd say it was because Morgana and Arthur were half-siblings that had Mordred out of Wedlock, which means Mordred is a bastard child and has no claim to the throne. of course this resulted in a lot of problems, so, so, so many problems and Morgana cultivated/raised her son to hate/murder his own father. (which was actually prophesized! and came true!!!! cause Mordred killed Arthur while in return Arthur killed Mordred...they killed each other at the same time!!!)

This makes me think that Morgana really loved Arthur more than a sister should. Then after Mordred was born he married another woman. It's pretty disgusting considering they are siblings. I haven't read the story but that is what I'm getting from this song. If any one knows more please comment.

That's the Merlin version and you find out later that she and Arthur really are Half Siblings in the show. Merlin played fast and loose because they couldn't make up their minds on where they wanted the legends to fall in terms of their show. That's why Mordred is just a druid boy in that version.
