I love how Azagthoth pressures himself to be inventive, avoiding tropes whenever possible, and relying on often atonal, off-tempo, avant-garde patterns, techniques, and effects. This album is really a panache of metal styles: thrash, death, and sludge, that adds up to be more than the sum of its parts. Affinity for this band is a taste inevitably acquired by metal aficionados. I watched their latest incarnation play this whole album live, and it's really a lot more impressive in person. You gotta hear those harmonics coming offa big-ass stacks that shake the whole venue.

Cool Arno. I'm a 100% metalhead because I love music and passionate energy in the first place. I also find that in funk, jazz, world music, country, 70's disco or Vivaldi's 'four seasons', just to name a few genre's. Death Metal can make me feel like Zeus while Neil Young can bring tears to my eyes...music is god's gift, even to the devil! 😉👍

This album was pretty much my introduction to death metal when I was young and it was the first death metal album I ever bought. I bought it right after it was released, loved it, and I dove head first into my death metal phase for at least a couple years. Back then there was no internet, so I had to find death metal bands through magazines, record shops, word of mouth, and bootleg trading. Ahh, the good old days.

I love death metal. I love Deicide, Cannibal Corpse, Death, Suffocation, Gorguts, Entombed, Autopsy, Morgoth, Morbid Angel, Nocturnus, etc. You’re a fool if you think Morbid Angel is a lagging band. They might not have been as fast as bands like Deicide or Cannibal Corpse, but they’re the band that perfected death metal. Possessed started it, Death gave it the sound and attitude, but Morbid Angel perfected it.

This opening riff is very Carcass-like. Loved (and still love) the one Carcass album (Necrotism) back in the early 90's but never got into Morbid Angel. For some reason the drumming reminded me of rapid type-writing(???). What can I say: I'm older and wiser: Alters, Blessed, Convent are incredible albums.

In my experience Morbid Angel are a band that requires you to really delve into the riffs, lyrics, concepts to fully appreciate. For some reason out of the main OSDM bands they were the one that took me longest to properly get into, even though I had Altars and Covenant for many years, but for some reason it was getting Blessed where the obsessed started, I just loved the murky, strange atmosphere and weird interludes. It made me listen to them more carefully and realise how unique their approach was to death metal. Before that I just wanted the ugliest, rawest most extreme DM, which is great 'n all, but Morbid Angel have something else on top of that.
