Moray Eel Attacks Diver..A terrifying moment in an otherwise peaceful recreational activity.

A true Moray Eel attack. I have always been comfortable with these creatures until this! Now if an eel is free swimming I stay way away. The courageous diver finished the dive although later had to go get 22 stitches and a two week antibiotic regime. Please be very, very wary if you happen along a free swimming eel and stay away from it. #eelattack #MorayEel #ActualEelAttack

You know that you have to be treated with antibiotics and tetanus shot after getting bit by moray ? And its teath are backwards so it destroyes your skin completly . This looked harmless but in reality you can read what the author wrote that the diver needed 22 stitches and 2 weeks of antibiotics .

Back in the 1990's while working as a Commercial Diver in the virgin islands I was bit by one of these guys. Latched onto my finger. At that time the general rule was don't attempt to extricate yourself from the eels teeth as the damage to you could be worse, hold still and let the eel release its grip on its own. Well I'd like to meet the person who could hold still and wait. Me I pulled my finger out of its mouth, went topside to assess the damage, grabbed a bottle of rum from a liquor store on the boardwalk close by, doused my finger with rum, bandaged it and got back to work. All in a day of Commercial Diving.

This is an example of how fish behavior changes when they are fed. Neither grouper nor eels typically swim right up to a diver and virtually anytime you see a free swimming green moray eel it has been fed and is habituated to human feeding, therefore associating a diver with hand feeding. Anyone that feeds wild animals does them a huge disservice as it changes their behavior and likely shortens their lives. And as documented here it creates a hazard for other divers.

I once saw a diver get his neck bitten by a moray eel. The diver was feeding groupers (and teasing morays!) with fish carried in a proper plastic food bin. But the diver also had a couple of extra fish hidden in his BC pocket, and there was an invisible cloud of fish juice around his head. The moray smelled the fish juice, and gently tested the diver's neck to see if it was the source of the aroma. When the eel realized his mistake, he let go... if he had bitten the diver's neck in earnest, the guy would have bled to death. He was lucky to only need a few stitches. I'll bet that diver never carried fish in his BC pocket again!

my wife and I tried to feed a grouper in Florida with no success. We left the food floating in the water. The fish went over to it and suddenly INHAILED the food. If I had been holding the food my arm would have been well inside the mouth of the grouper. I learned my lesson.

They do not attack divers on anything resembling a regular basis. They do, however, have very poor eyesight and thus are prone to mistaken identity.

i feel like the diver’s watch may have confused the eel into thinking it was prey - it’s common for aquatic predators to instinctively go after shiny/reflective things.

They once brought one up on the fish boat I was on. Caught him on a hook, deck hands screamed don't let him on the boat! Once he was on the deck he was like pac man, going for everybodies toes.

Did it even bite him? Didn't look like it, how the hell he have to get 22 stitches when it barely put its mouth on him and he didn't seem to even react like he got bit, he was wagging his finger at it like a joke I mean what is this? Not even any blood. So 22 stitches huh? And he finished the dive even with that apparently horrific injury? Not worried about attracting sharks? So much stupid going on I can't...

I mean in all reality that could have been a lot worse, i think the eel was just trying to test him ... Let ya know who's running the place lol, lovely creature though they get so huge and to be honest the look of moray eels is just menacing but they seem to be quite curious when around people, I've seen a lot of great interactions with them and humans in the water, fun fact the creator of aliens took some biological notes on the moray eel to create the classic xenomorph fantasy species ...
