Mora Robust, after modifications

In this video I revisit the Mora Robust (tradesmans knife) after sharpening it to a true zero and putting a 90 on the spine,
will the fine edge last a few wood processing tests?
I also use my Bacho laplander, a saw that fell out of favour with me when I discovered silky saws.

    The Mora Robust (modified) and the Hultafors OK4 (standard) are two of the best budget blades ever...near indestructible and easy to look after. I love my OK4. Great review mate...agreed Silky saws are just in a different league than the Bacho saws.

    I wear 2xl gloves in the states(we don't have the more precise sizes in gloves anymore). The mora 511 and robust are ok for food and very light carving or for batoning, but it can get painful to use for any extended time as the ends will hurt my delicate fingers. I still keep them in emergency kits in the family cars because they are an excellent value and the guard is a good thing with family of varying levels of experience. For me I use one with the nub at the end ground off and polished or a one of several blades that i make my own handles for. All that is a long winded way of saying these are great for a lot of purposes even if they aren't perfect.

    I love your humor, and that is about as smart of a comment I have for you right now. Zero edge scandi grind can be finicky. Blade stock thickness, how hard the steel is, grind angle, maybe blade profile(concave vs convex [kukri knife recurve]) these can affect Zero grind scandi.

    Thanks for the follow up review. I agree, Mora make good knives for a fair price (except maybe the Garberg, good, but too expensive). I've owned used and retired several mora knives. Retired not because they don't work, but because I find other knives aesthetically more pleasing!

    I have both Silky and Laplander saws. The Silkys may be better/faster saws in contest, but I still love my Laplanders. If you're just out for a wander round in the woods and aren't likely to need to cut thicker stuff (< 3 inch dia.), the Laplander is still a great little tool and the overall design is much more 'pocket-friendly' than the Silkys. You are allowed to replace the blades if they get dull, BTW!

    For common uses, I prefer having a microbevel to having an edge of "true zero" The true zero edge might be the better carver of wood, but it's not as durable. It's a special purpose edge. And it's more difficult to resharpen.

  • @RobEvansWoodsman

    @RobEvansWoodsman

    Totally agree on a utility knife like this one but I just don't like micro bevels, I have compromised the edge strength on this knife but my own zero bevels are steeper therefore stronger.

    I love this knife, yes you have to modify it if you want to strike a ferro rod, and the sheath is shit. Take your time and create a proper leather sheath for it, take good care of the sheath (and your knife) and you can always get a new good knife for very little money if you need to replace it. I have several of them spred throughout the house, it's a great utility
