Moose Pit Behavior Caught On Camera

Incredible Moose Pit Behavior Caught On Camera
Big Alaska bull moose digs a rut pit and then the action begins. Lucky for us, friend Michael Mauro, Rick and I were able to scramble on top of a big boulder for this front row center show. Just amazing behavior to witness from the safety of 8 feet up. I'd not want to have been on the ground for this one!Watch as the cows go nuts over his pit. Oh, and btw...I'd cut twenty (20!) seconds of him peeing out of this video! Fun and crazy stuff with the Alaska moose! Enjoy and if you like, please subscribe!
Thanks for watching our channel, we are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part time Alaska.) It is our passion to document wildlife of any kind, but moose are at the top. In New Hampshire we spend a lot of our spring/summer hours in kayaks photographing loons and moose in the waters of New Hampshire. And hike many miles in Alaska seeking all manner of wildlife in the fall.

Thank you for the explanation in the description! Amazing footage, was wondering how on earth you could be standing so close and all this going on! Granted I’ve never hunted moose and maybe this behavior is well known, but I’ve never heard of it nor seen it til now. Awesome.

Thank you, Kathy. We would never get this footage if these animals were hunted here; this is a state park and they are protected, so they tend to not be as afraid of humans. Still, it's tough to get this footage as we do have to hike in for it. Thanks so much for your kind comment, and for watching!

Not ONLY did he pee, the cows just LOVE the intoxicating perfume of it with his love pheromones. Weird, but that's how many ungulates telegraph their readiness to mate. Funny part is? the cows fight each other over the pit, to wallow in that perfume. They're not fighting over the bull himself! Funny to watch. And now not only have you seen it all, you're heard it all. Thanks for commenting/watching!

Actually we were farther away when the cows started coming around and there was a huge boulder so we climbed on top of it. Otherwise we'd never have gotten this; too dangerous with the cows darting around. These moose are rather used to seeing humans, so they don't run off at the first sight of us. Aggression is always something we watch for; reading their body language. It's the cows and the younger bulls one has to really be wary of!

Male moose pisses on a spot on the ground and female moose are diving right on into the spot and rolling in it once he's done. I guess that's the moose equivalent to putting on his hoodie.

It's the moose equivalent of perfume. It's weird, isn't it? Yet the cows don't givva $#it about the bull, they just want to wallow in that pit. The rest comes a bit later. 😁

The cows are drawn to the chemicals in the bull's pee, they find it irresistible and roll in it, and rub themselves on the bull where he has laid in it. This is believed to bring them into estrus in order for the bull to mate with them.
