This is the best tutorial on moonwalking. I used to try it for fun (in my much younger days) but couldn’t quite figure it out. Watching this, now, I think I could have done it properly. Ironically, though, I now have only one leg so I don’t think I will be able to pull it off (the dance, not my leg - I can pull that off). Life is just full of surprises.

To call this a brilliant presentation would be an understatement. You go beyond teaching; you are a facilitator. This comes from a guy (me) who was born and will die with both feet in the same shoe. I dance like a Neanderthal on Valium, therefore I abhor the dancing scene. I never went for the girl who dances like a breeze; I went for the one who likes movies. I don't care. But seeing you explaining & describing, making it looks easy and logical to understand, well, Albert, all I can say is: YOU, YOU (as Robert De Niro says it to Billy Crystal on Analyze This) Keep on sharing, please.

Neil Armstrong died in 1997, initially he had Testicular(Balls) cancer from radiation exposure due to the Van Allen Belt he went through on his trip to the moon. The cancer SLOWLY went from his balls(Testes) to his stomach(tummy), then liver then hoped a ride to his breasts(yes men get it too) then lymph nodes(arm pit region) and finally stage IV-A cancer of the brain(the section that he needed to keep living) diagnosed in 1996. His ashes(after his body was cremated) were ejected into space by a Uganda satellite in 2002. He was a great man.

Thank you so much, Albert! I knew how to do this for approximately 15 minutes back in 1984 . I was in the Navy at the time. I'm a few years older, now, and suddenly need to learn this again (I don't think we can term this "mid-life crisis" stuff at my age-- 64. ) Always enjoyed dancing, and even now I'm still very energetic when I dance. Thirty-something women ask me to dance, sometimes (well, used to, before Covid-19). Perhaps now I can reconnect with those 15 minutes! Again, thank you, Albert-- you broke this down perfectly. (I might catch on in a month or two-- or hopefully by the time the Covid has passed or been defeated). I've probably got lots of time to practice, but I certainly see some fun in the future!

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I've been practicing for a while and what I find hard is supporting the weight of my body on the ball of the foot. Walking normally the weight is spread across the whole foot which also makes it easier to balance. I think shoes make a difference too, specifically how wide and stiff the soles are.

I have always wanted to know how it worked. MJ just made it look so effortless! And while I instinctively knew it was about transferring weight onto the wrong foot, it still didn’t make any sense to me. This video was totally awesome for that! But not only just understanding the Moonwalk, but also understanding how and why we walk naturally, plus the assumptions we make observing the action. Once we’ve learned a skill, like walking, we take it for granted and rarely take the time to fully understand the action after it’s been assimilated. Great video! Thanks!

Very helpful and thorough! I never realized so much was going into everyday walking. I think artists of all disciplines have a vigilance about seeing things more profoundly. And as we have always heard to get great at anything takes tremendous amounts of practice. I have a daughter who draws and paints, she has taught me so much about how artists are seeing the world with a more detailed focus and then practicing over and over regarding what the focus is on...this seems to be true with drawing, painting, writing, danciing playing musical instrument, singing or whatever your creative love tends to gravitate toward. Thanks for sharing!

No lie any dance u learn to do Is gonna seem rehearsed at first but as mentioned. . . . . . Practice it more and more and more . And it will become more natural . I've seen many moonwalkers , I'm in my 30s and watching this I just did my first moonwalk. May sound corny but bet I learn it well and next time I go to my hospital Christmas party and The DJ put on MJ, oh I'm going full MJ mode , thanks for the video 🎤🎶🎵🎼

Good tutorial and i'm glad someone from your generation finally understands that real breakdance is mainly about vusal effects, and not this distorted form that is just ground gymnastics nowadays... But if i may add a little input to prefect your move, there is a little thing that you do wrong. Watch you video and notice how you are bending the knee of the leg going backward. You should be carefull to keep your leg straight until you are finished going back and ready to lift your heel. And only then you bend your knee. Also you forgot to mention a common mistake. Human naturally lean forward when they walk. So you have to take this into account also and lean slightly forward (it helps with balance also since the supporting leg is in front). Finally, for the extra little touch, when you lift your heel off the ground, before starting to bring your front leg backward, to have a perfect illusion, put your foot straight, putting all your weight on the tip of your toes (I should say on your shoes but you got the idea; like a ballet dancer). Because in real life when you walk, the foot you are bringing forward travels straight, not with the toes upward...

While swinging the opposite arm to the leg that is moving is comfortable it is not more efficient than moving the same arm and leg As the terrain gets more and more pitched the typical way we walk gets exponentially less efficient The weirdness of it is the lack of practice , fighting against muscle memory and the increased torque that is exerted as the muscles work in tandem Think of it like a 12 speed bike. Starting off you use lower gears because the high torque effort of higher gears is difficult. But once in motion the momentum lowers effort and maximum distance is achieved Same with the walk, it effectively uses the weight of the upper body to propel forward and the torque is not wasted across the body Start up effort high, follow up effort low This walk/run is a part of terrain navigation perfected by the Chinese and was best utilized in Ninjitsu Developing your core is important on selling the moonwalk Most people think the push comes from the toe of the planted foot. This is the way you explained it and showed it in your video The illusion is that the weight is on the unsuspected foot But this is one of the reasons your moonwalk looks jerky You are pushing off the toes of the off foot and using the friction to then push back against the ground and sliding your other foot Doing so sets the fulcrum wrong and along with swinging your arms it shifts weight and torques in the exact same way that makes swinging the off side arm when walking the normal way, inefficient The way to do it is to tighten your core and create tension between the opposing legs at the waist, hips and thighs It’s closing the legs that creates opposition and movement not the push off the ground completely Along with keeping the arm swing relatively short and using the tensing and relaxing of the SHOULDERS and back against the tightness of the core the torque of the body is minimized as the legs shift roles and the walk becomes far more fluid Go watch MJ, he does not swing his arms like a normal walk for very long, just enough to start the torque wave opposition, after that his core is super tight and you can see his shoulders tighten and release Knowing how much tension to have when and where makes it look like effort is used in forward movement but while moving backwards because of the legs scissoring That’s a moonwalk, you are pushing off the toes in a reverse glide with the illusion of the illusion

I'm an original break dancer from the 80s, having battled Crazy Legs, the Rock Steady and lone break dancers who were good. Before MJ came out with the moonwalk we were already doing it -- we called it gliding. MJ learned a lot from break dancers. No one has to believe this, but it is true. Many break dancers didn't even pay attention to MJ and were gliding like magic, including me -- I still do it and love it. Life of the party moves. -dc

Awesome man. I learned the moonwalk a long time ago but as extensive as this is really nice. Also with the story part at the end, it was so simple and short but still very useful. I never thought about a story in my dance, I just did whatever came up to me.That way my dance is quite individual and doesn't have interaction with people. Do you have a video where you go further into that or maybe make one?

I really, really enjoy your videos, just discovered them recently! This particular video brought back an idea I had of doing a tutorial on a dance move called the "running man", albeit broken down to the finer points, like this video. Other tutorials I've seen either don't cover enough or plainly doing it wrong. I'd like to rectify this and create an insightful tutorial on it (It'll be my first) I'll post a link some time soon in a comment, check it out if you're interested! I've been branching out from the Melbourne Shuffle to more freestyle dance like the stuff you teach, keep the tutorials coming, Albert. :)
