MOONEYES name and design used under license.
Dean Moon was around cars and racing from his youth. Dean was involved in dry lake hot-rodding in the late 1940s. He founded MOON Equipment Company (c.1950) and worked to improve the quality and safety of speed and racing products his entire life. Dean Moon was a hot rodder and innovator of speed parts. He established a company that became an icon in the hot rodding industry. Early products were a multi-carb fuel block, spun aluminum wheel discs, aluminum gas tanks and a foot-shaped throttle pedal. Products carrying the Moon name, including the Moon disc wheel covers and Moon Tank auxiliary fuel containers, were very popular. MOON Equipment Company paused after Dean died in 1987, then stopped momentarily after Dean Moon's wife died. In the early 1990s the company restarted as MOONEYES USA which continues to carry on the traditions of Dean Moon today.
Dean Moon (May 1, 1927 - June 4, 1987), grew up in Norwalk, California. Moon was around cars and racing from his youth. His father owned "Moon Cafe" and had a go-kart track he called "Moonza", a pun on Monza.[1][full citation needed] Dean was involved in dry lakes hot-rodding in the late 1940s.[2] He founded MOON Speed Equipment (c.1950) and worked to improve the quality and safety of speed and racing products his entire life.
Moon was one of the founding members of Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association in 1963.[3]
Dean Moon was a hot rodder and innovator of speed parts. He built and raced cars from El Mirage Dry Lake and Bonneville Salt Flats to the drag strips and beyond, and established a company that became an icon in the hot rodding industry. Starting his business from modest beginnings in a garage behind his father's Moon Cafe in Norwalk, he grew it into an internationally recognized brand name. Early products were a multi-carb fuel block, spun aluminum wheel discs, aluminum gas tanks and a foot-shaped throttle pedal. Products carrying the Moon name, including the Moon disc wheel covers and Moon Tank auxiliary fuel containers, were very popular, and Moon Equipment's bright-yellow show cars and drag cars were used as prototypes for Hot Wheels toys.[1]
In 1960 Moon purchased the Potvin company from Chuck Potvin, a good friend and manufacturer of ignitions, camshafts and blower drives. In 1962, he moved the company to the Moon Equipment building in Santa Fe Springs, California, and continued producing Potvin products.
The very first A.C. Shelby Cobra to reach the United States, delivered to Carroll Shelby, was fitted with a Ford V8 engine and transmission at Dean Moon's shop in Santa Fe Springs, in February 1962. This historic location at 10820 S. Norwalk Blvd. is where MOONEYES still resides today.
Moon brought a level of showmanship to the sport of drag racing. His cars not only went fast but looked good with signature Mooneyes decals, yellow paint and chrome plating. His teams were well turned out in all white uniforms with the MOON Logo and cowboy hats. Revell made a plastic model kit of the Chevrolet-powered Dragmaster-chassied Mooneyes dragster, which they termed as a rolling testbed (driven by Gary Cagle to a win at the 1962 NHRA Winternationals[4]), then as exhibition car shows after it retired from racing.[5] The car made a comeback in England in 1963 driven by Dante Duce. In 1964 Duce won the Brighton Speed Trials in the Moonbeam, a Devin-bodied sports car equipped with a supercharged Chevrolet V-8 motor.[6]
Many Moon products are still used today and are sought after for restoring and recreating old hot rods. The “Mooneyes” logo is a well known part of the history of the sport.
Moon Speed Equipment "paused" after Dean died in 1987, then stopped momentarily after Dean Moon's wife died. In the early 1990s, Shige Suganuma, restarted the company as MOONEYES USA which continues to carry on the traditions of Dean Moon today, including the Mooneyes Hot Rod & Custom Show.

I had an "original" when they were first released. My military dad got transferred every few months (he worked the DEW line). After three moves, there was no more Moon Eyes Dragster. I always hoped some other kid found it and built it. Cast in blue for the body and engine, then medium grey frame. Front wheels were Moon Eye Hub Caps. So YOU found it and built it - GREAT JOB too. Thanks again, Chris - you've done "Moon" proud.

I have to tell ya Chris that last year when I was placed on furlough for 6 weeks because of the pandemic I was in a strange place never ever having more than 1 week off from work at a time in my entire career. Haven't had that much time off since highschool summer vacation. After all the home improvement projects and working on my truck's budding frame rust I got an inclination to perhaps return to an old favorite hobby of mine from the days of old. In the act of seeking out modern day modeling advice I stumbled across your videos. I just want you to know that for me they gave me a sense of serenity in addition to all the many things I've learned from you about the hobby and I can't thank you enough for doing what you do. I noticed that my hands shook a lot more and my vision wouldn't even allow me to read the directions let alone what color the paint bottles said they were. This was beginning to depress me. But watching you so effortlessly bang these kits out so beautifully inspired me to do something about those problems. I cut back on the coffee and that dimished the shaky hands and got myself some readers and other magnifying tools and began my journey back into what I consider an extremely rewarding hobby and pastime. I love the music you play when you're painting for one thing and am a musician and music lover myself. Your "southpaw" hand painting also inspired me to just trust myself that I could do it too and low and behold I can now. I admit that I hafta hum some of the tunes you play while doing so but whatever helps I say. So I hope you never ever get sick of it in spite of all the kits you've built. You put together a great presentation and watching your videos has helped me to relax and not sweat the small stuff. I wish you the best and I hope you have a nice holiday season this year.

i used to love building models as a kid. my craftsmanship was never great and they never looked like the "box" picture.. whenever i had the $2 it took to buy one tho... that didnt include the "testers" glue (.20c i think!) and the tiny glass bottles of testers paints ( dont recall how much they were in the late 60s) i had all the revell models .. boot hill express lil red wagon the "hawaiian" the mongoose n snake... oh!.. and the "rat fink" models 😂... this one looks top quality ( old ones were crappy!)

I reckon those extra parts come from the dual model Revell kit Sanitary Bucket which was a T bucket and Mooneyes dragster. The T bucket was a dead ringer for the Winged Express only lacking the wing. There were three dual model kits in the sixties, one featured a really neat Topolino altered. The body/chassis of the Mooneyes was originally done with yellow plastic.

Thanks Chris. My name is Chris also. I run a model club in northern California. I'm planning a build contest among our 3 Junior members using this kit. They might have a problem competing with our more senior members. To try to build skills that they can transfer to more complicated models. I'm planning to build it along with them, just as I remember seeing it as it raced. Yes, I am that old.

When I built models back in the 70s, early 80s, I would save all the left over parts, thinking I would use them on a other build, but I actually saved more than I used. Dig Mooneyes. We lived nearby , and I remember when there were oil fields and you could see from a distance the bright yellow Moon eyes building, especially at night, when it was lit up. Just down the street was a topless bar. And Dean Moon jr was my high school classmate. The Moon residence was in a neighborhood across the street from my high school.

Fantastic job! I see a lot of the parts that were used on the 1/25 Carl Casper Undertaker Dragster by Polar Lights. What made me think that was the blower set up and parts on unused frame and steering. I could be wrong though.

Great video, very helpful as I'm in the process of building this for a friend. I will say, whilst it's not an overly complicated kit, it's definitely showing its age and if you want to build it neat it will take extra time. There's extra flash on most parts requiring trimming and sanding, especially annoying on tiny details like knock off wheel nuts where they had to be drilled out as the flash had prevented them fitting properly. Some of the fitment is pretty poor and the instructions aren't great. For example the cover over the steering and back of the transmission (the two halves) hangs over the edges when placed on top but sits flush on the real car. As mentioned in the video the supercharger pipes need to be trimmed as they don't line up properly and most parts are plated in chrome even when not required like the engine block. The motor mount also sits well below the engine when mounted per the instructions which looks a bit silly on closer inspection. Again, it's not a bad kit, but if you're wanting perfection just know it won't build up as neatly as a more modern Revell or Tamiya kit.

It may look simple.......But it's very labor intensive to get the parts to fit together. It requires a LOT of sanding, filing, and fitting to get this thing to fit together. Instructions......might as well have them, most of it will be intuition and trial and error. But it can be made look good. I take my hat off to the builder, he did a great job on a really bad kit. He always does.

Ironically, the dropped front axle included with the kit makes an even more realistic model than the straight axle does. The real Mooneyes dragster used a dropped front axle! I went a step further by making my front and rear axles out of aluminum rod and aluminum tubing because I like my wheels to roll freely and they do!
