Moondog | The Viking Composer of 6th Street
linktr.ee/n8te4u
Moondog is one of the greatest and most important composers of all time. Full Stop. He created entirely new forms of music and revolutionized the fusion of jazz harmony with the thematic organization of classical music. He was also a singular counter-cultural figure in American history independent of his musical achievements. His compositions were admired by everyone from Igor Stravinsky, to Charlie Parker, to Leonard Bernstein, Arturo Toscanini and beyond. Janis Joplin covered one of his songs as well. His sight may have been robbed from him at a young age, but this no way took away his ability to foresee, and create the future of classical music, by fusing it together with the ethos of the Album Era. He also loved vikings and norse/germanic culture and spent his days anonymously standing on the streets, with most people not realizing he was such a revolutionary musical figure. And this is why, he will be featured today. Moondog's genius needs to be shouted about from the rooftops and let his name no longer be lost to history! He is one of the greatest composers who ever lived!!!! Let his legend be known!!!

I used to talk with Moondog on my lunch hours in 1971 in NYC. I am pleased that he is still celebrated and remembered after so many years. He was a truly amazing, talented, and gifted artist, and a great man..
Jeff Bridges once showed interest in playing Moondog in a film. I think he would be perfect

I’d love to see just that especially if directed by Terry Gilliam. Possibly a fantasy combining Moondog with Zatoichi in which no one is hurt. Music is used to diffuse all tensions. I play a very small banjo mandolin and get smiles from most everyone - excepting bluegrass mandolin players. I recommend all people start their day with Moondog’s ‘Rabbit Hop’.

Another great video! the Native American percussion gives me a bit of an exotica vibe, and he does share some similar lifestyle and fashion sense with eden ahbez.

Your welcome!!
Please post as many videos on the space age as you see fit. I have the appetite for them
I used to listen to that album a lot in my teens
You can't fool me. That's Tim the Enchanter!
chapeau
Well produced video on excellent content with a soothing voice. Subbed.
I didn't know that much about Moondog. I'll have to check him out. He was like the Varg Vikernes of 20th century classical lol. I don't agree with his opinions on Christianity but he had an original style. I wonder if he was an influence on dungeon synth. You should do some Lost music on Sun Ra, Harry Partch or Jim Kirkwood next.
Is the album picture (6:20, 7:23 etc) perhaps oriented 90° out? My version of this album has 'MOONDOG' written downwards and his portrait tilted on its nose. Although I see spotify and discogs also have this orientation. hmm, i wonder what moondog would say...
Um Sixth Avenue . . . sheesh
I love Moondog's music. But there's something surprising : many people think the Vikings did wear helmets with horns. But this is absolutly wrong. The origin of this mistake has a name : Richard Wagner. In his operas, Vikings appear wearing helmet with Horns. He was wrong.
ASK GLASS AND REICH WHO BORN "THEIR" MUSIC - The only honest answer is... MOONDOG!

Glass said he learned from Moondog when he slept on his couch, than he did when studying at Juliard
Shame about his absolute bigotry
