I agree with your theory. I've watched quite a few videos on Soviet pop music, and this has all the markings of the kind of stuff that was coming out of the USSR in the '80s. It sounds more Russian than East German to me though.

@NAETEMUSIC. I am a new fan of the channel, and of you. I started a minor stink in an Exotica and Unusual Music fan page on facebook. I said that the spiritual successor of Exotic music is modern Lo-Fi (certain types) as well as Vaporwave and the like. I emphasized the use of this music as mood music, cocktail music, etc. I still feel that way. I inadvertently drove a wedge with that one. There is a great documentary about Exotica on KZread. It stemmed from the memories of our personnel in the Pacific Theater of WW2. Novelist James Michener pointed out how, except for the fighting (and being onboard a Navy ship for months at a time,) the whole thing was an absolute DREAM. They created Tiki culture, and the music. It reminded them of the best days of their lives. It is no wonder that culture of music didn’t last long. It is ephemeral, and rooted in memory and imagination. Conversely, Rock and Roll grew from the Delta soil with DEEP roots. I hope you read this, sir, my name is Don. I am 43 years old and live in New Orleans French Quarter. I look forward to more of your videos, and maybe hearing from you. Good day!

The band you're looking for is called Far Out Magazine. It is a punk group from East Germany. I wasn't a punk rocker when I lived in West Berlin in 1987, but I found the punks pretty fascinating. A lot of West Berlin radio stations played the song, as the punk rocker was from East Berlin and was jailed due to his music. The band had several names to keep themselves hidden. Every time a band member left, they changed their name. Dresden on Fire was another punk name they used as one of the band members was from there. The punk rock group was arrested several times in East Germany as they were very anti-communist. It is someone's belief that the band member himself was tortured or killed in an East German prison by the communist left-leaning government, and anyone caught with their tapes would face up to 10 years in jail, so that's why no one remembers the song. If you ask former East Germans who are in the punk scene, they'll tell you about the story. A lot of them had a Saxon accent; that's why it sounds a bit Russian; it's just a different dialect. Now here's the strange thing: the song is blacklisted in Germany, as the lawyer who defended the punk group banned the song from German radios. I can't figure that one out. The guy's name is Gregor Florian Gysi (German pronunciation:) You see many people were taken by the government of East Germany that didn't fit their system. It is my strongest belief that the guy who wrote the song died in prison and the government is trying to cover it up. Just remember they still have a left-leaning government in Germany, and Gregor Gysi is still a politician.

the main thing I've listened to was Pom Pom, and it was one of my favorite albums in recent years. I would still listen to it, tho not as often. But it did help influence the kinda music i got into, whether its people in a similar genre, or those who inspired him. It's hard sometimes to seperate art from the artist, Kanye especially cause he's in the genre where you have to put a lot of yourself to it. Feels too coincidental the kinda mindset he has now was there all along in his early music. I remember there was a tweet around the same time he got ridiculed for his rightwing views, responding to Fantano's on how the right wing is shit at making music, claim high and mighty that hes an example of the right making good music. Couldn't roll my eyes further if i tried. You already mentioned that this recent hit wasn't the first time he faced controversy, i would hope that he'll see to his senses, but i'm not gonna hold my breath.

Here's why T-Ride didn't make it-it wasn't grunge (plenty of hair metal and prog-metal bands managed to survive the switch in audience tastes), and it wasn't their complexity (I mean Dream Theater was only getting started in '92). It was the vocalist. As good as his range was his lyrics were almost indecipherable. On top of that the lyrics weren't all that great. Their most well-known song was 'Luxury Cruiser'...a song about getting laid in a limo. As much as I love this band and their sound the thing that both made them amazing and sank their career was the fact that the music was the best and only interesting thing about it. It was amazing and had a really great mood and vibe. Geoff Tyson is one of the best guitarists to come out of that era. He managed to do OK as far as adapting to new music styles. There's been rumors of the second albums material being put together for some kind of re-release but aside from a few rumblings over the years I really doubt we'll see anything else from this band. Kind of a shame but unless Dan's improved his enunciation and writing skills they're probably better off being known for producing a well-remembered cult classic. I say all this as someone who's been obsessed with this album since first finding a copy of the cassette at a swap meet in the early 90's. I forced my aunt to listen to it every morning all throughout my senior year in high school ('92).

When you started, I was like "okay so this guy is still learning piano". Then you started singing and I realized you were a natural singer and a great musician. The only thing I'd suggest is in your intro using a D7 chord on the "fake it" line. The D# you're playing in the arpeggio doesn't belong in there.

My solution: Statues in Motion created this song. But... this is not the version that we are listening to. Sometime in 1982-1983, Statues in Motion either recorded this to tape, or experimented with it. However, they never made a proper recording or release. This is why some of the band members vaguely remember playing/recording it. Move ahead to 1984, Statues in Motion disbanded. Former member (and lead singer) Alvin Dean moves on to other projects, but he remembers this song and wants to try it again. He get's together with some musican friends, possibly hires a studio musician for the guitar, and records THIS versio with less electronics, more guitar and.... using the DX7, which is in vogue. He sends the recording to some DJ who recognized the singer's name and gave it airplay. Stardom does not ensue. Move ahead to 1985 or later, and Alvin Dean has left Greece/Europe, left the music industry, possibly heading to South Africa. He dissapears and probably died. PS I subsequently found that another writer has the same conclusion: @johngarcia1340 has suggested that the friends who worked with Alvin Dean on this recording are "Forward Music Quintet (which included the Drummer and friend of Alvin's from his former group, Homicide, who was nicknamed 'Von Claus', and Billy Knight's former band Parthenogenesis's Bass Player, as well.) Additionally, Greek Guitarist and solo artist Yannis Beltekis recently released a small demo sample from a recording session he and Alvin had in 1984, with DX7 Syntheziser sounds that are exactly eerily similar to Forward Music Quintet's 1985 Album." Like the wind, you came here running. Take the consequence of living. There's no space, there's no tomororrow. There's no sense communicating. Check it in, Check it out, but the sun goes down outside. Paranoid anyway, in the subway of your mind. Like the wind, You're born in summer. Let a smile be your companion. There's no place, and there's no sorrow, in the young and restless dreamer. Check it in, check it out, or the sun will never shine. Paranoid anyway, in the subway of your mind. BRIDGE Check it in, check it out, but the sun will never shine. Paranoid anyway, in the subway of your mind. Check it in, check it out, its the summer blues. Tear it in, tear it out, cause I'm reading you.

I like the personal anecdote you use to frame it all. What's up with the weird audio cuts though? Am I supposed to loop the video a certain way to get a secret message? Just kidding I know it's probably those S and T sounds.

The premise is laughable. The music is enterally forgettable. It sounds like they are chasing after the Beatles. My main points: Compared to the elegant engineering/production of the George Martin Apple team, this LP is clumsy. The backing vocals are predictable and old fashioned. The 'sounds' that Wilson employ are cringe at best. It almost sounds like a comedy LP. The only good song is Good Vibrations, which was a song that was written and half-way completed during the Pet Sounds LP. The main point: Imagine the week that Sgt. Pepper was first released in 1967. Every person with ears was in possession of the LP, every person was sitting attentively at their record player in awe of the revolutionary songs and sounds on that disc. Sgt. Pepper sounded modern and cutting edge. Everyone new each song by heart. I listened to the entire Smile LP and I am seriously depressed by the rambling meanderings of each uninspired song.
