I am an orphan and was raised and loved by my paternal grandmother. And this song is her favorite song. I remember when she was lying in a coma in the hospital, I hummed this song to her, and she gently squeezed my hand. This was played in piano on her funeral, and everytime I hear this song, it makes me cry... I love my nana, so much!😟

This is masterpice! “Moon River” was sung by Audrey Hepburn (at least nobody’s ever proven she was dubbed) in character as Holly Golightly, who came out of the rural south to become a party girl who “subsists on dates with wealthy lovers, in the hope that one of them will marry her.” (Truman Capote's heroine Holly Golightly by another name) So it’s easy to interpret the beginning of the song, “I’m crossing you in style some day,” to mean I intend to cross from my plain old world into a glamorous one. But then everything changes. The river is not only a “dream maker,” which fits well with what the beginning implies, but also a “heart breaker,” which means accepting that there can be a price. And the song says “Wherever you’re going, I’m going your way,” switching from the idea of crossing the river to the idea of following the river. She and the river are then termed “two drifters, off to see the world,” as she re-imagines the dream maker and heart breaker, which were a kind of powerful force in contrast to herself, as more of a partner. The song says there’s “such a lot of world to see” before we reach the “rainbow’s end,” so if we’ve seen all the world that we can, then I supposed the “rainbow’s end” can only be death- which has been metaphorized many times already by other writers as the place where the river ends; and it’s the place where the force that has swept her along through life is revealed as not just a partner but a friend. That is interesting. I don't see much similarity between the two. I am so partial to Audrey. Maybe only a slight softness in her voice here, but still not like Audrey. I almost heard a bit of Andy Williams in this one.
