moomintroll greets snufkin in 20 different languages

Фильм және анимация

unlike the previous ones I've made (where the original japanese audio of the anime was placed first), they're now alphabetical!
yees sorry french has a watermark. it's the only episode 1 I could find lol.
this is not every language, unfortunately, since copyright claims make different versions harder to find these days. but it sure is a lot of them!

I'd say the voice is more calm than dull. Finnish as a language itself doesn't show much emotion in the words. If a Finnish person spoke Finnish like a native English speaker would speak English, the Finnish person would say insincere, as that's just not how the language functions. Hardly ever is emphasis placed in any part of a word specifically in Finnish, and when it is, it is typically the first part of the first word of a sentence.

It's so fun to hear all their voices, especially in the languages I can understand (Afrikaans, English and Korean)!! One thing I've noticed growing up with Korean TV is that every single children's show there has a spefic voice for young characters (Moomintroll in this case) and another for smarter/wiser, more mature characters (Snufkin). It isn't always completely the same for every single character but it stays pretty consistent throughout the shows I used to watch, and it also seems to be the case with Afrikaans. I'm wondering if this is a recurring thing in other languages too?

  • @lejeunotousier

It is recurring indeed, and in my opinion it's even more than that : every character who represents a stereotype (the mother, the male friend, female friend, the authority etc) has got the voice of its stereotype. And there, it's very interesting to listen to foreign stereotypes to see the cultural differences : the mother for english speakers has a deeper voice than for french speakers for example. This works even greater for continents I think.

I grow up with Polish version so those voices are just very nostaligic for me but I like English version too. French and Italian are cool and funny.. but from all of those my favorite are Japan version. This language is orginal to this version of Moomins so its kinda natural sounding to animaton. Plus their voices are so soft and just good for ears. XD

The Estonian and Russian versions are pretty bad, if I am going to be honest; the voices underneath are pretty distracting. The Arabic version is lacking due to how quiet the voices are. The fact that there is a Northern Sami version is interesting as the language only has a few thousand speakers (the quality is also surprisingly good). Of course, the Japanese version stands out as its voice cast is pretty seasoned, with many of the actors voicing pretty notable characters. Snufkin and Moomintroll here have the same actors as Dio Brando and Pit respectively for example (also, Moominpapa is Solid Snake and Sniff is Freeza).

the studio who made the 90s anime must have really loved moomin! i mean not only is the animation, backgrounds and especially the ost very nice (the music of this anime is like honey) but they also got these voice actors that ended up doing pretty popular characters later in their careers. When the Hungarian came I was so confused, like what is Snufkin's name there? But I listened to it many times and I think it's Szuszek which does not make any sense, just almost sound like snoring, which is really weird. And for Sniff we just translated his name, so it's Szimat. Nice. I never saw the 90's Moomin in Hungarian, but I saw the Polish one in Hungarian once when I was a kindergarten kid and from that for more than 14 years I searched for the show that caught my eyes as a kid. And when I found it I felt succed, that I actually achived something great. Edit: But later on, we changed Snufkin's name to Vándor, which means Traveller or Wanderer, and that fits him more I think. And I really want to watch the 2019 adaptation and hear the names.

It's interesting how a voice forms your perception of a character. I've started watching the 90s Moomins recently and I've been really enjoying it and I especially love the voices for pretty much the whole cast. Here in particular, Moomin and Snufkin sound animated and excited and I feel their voices suit them. Moomin is recognisably a young male and an absolute sweetheart and Snufkin is just perfect. (And hilariously... sensual at times, like here.) I know Finnish is the OG version but Moomin sounds too deep and Snufkin sounds monotone. Just my personal opinion though.
