Moog Mavis is a brand new semi analog synth voice built with inspiration from classic circuits from Moog's legacy. Mavis comes as an easy to build DIY kit and instantly gives you nice phatty rich bass. Mavis features a wave folder that can blur the lines between east coast and west coast sounds, and can be dropped right into any Eurorack modular compatible rack!

    When all the Mavis demos popped up on my Subs page, I watched this one first. And will probably watch it 50 times just like I did when I got my Softpops. Fun on a bun!

    Nice to see you mess with it beyond just the "preset" patches that come with it like a lot of other KZreadrs stuck with. Honestly, this thing seems amazing. I'm a huge fan of the Mother 32, in fact I just bought a second one about a month ago. Had I known this was coming out, I probably would have just bought a 104hp skiff and put this next to my M32 instead. Definitely going to get one of these, maybe even two at some point.

    I think they should have called it the “Granddaughter”, personally! Just sold my werkstat and honestly it feels like Mavis is what Moog wanted that to be… amazing patchbay, usable keyboard, and waaaaay more possibilities! Also I feel like this would pair really well with the O-Coast or even the Pico system?🤔

    I think the Mavis is a cute name. It's a reference to the 70s cartoon Willo the Wisp, where the main character was named Mavis and there was a dog named The Moog.

    I wonder if Mavis is the actual name of Bob's grandmother...? Florence Moog; Bob's aunt did research on enzymes in the stomach that ended up helping premature infants develop normal lung functioning. We all know so little about the actual Moog matriarchs.

    I'd go with this and a Mother 32, put them both in a 104hp skiff and you'd have yourself an extremely powerful mono synth

    Hi dude, I want to enter in the world of analog synthesis and I was looking for this litte Moog in combination with the Korg SQ1. Some people recommended to me to move on an Arturia Minibrute 2s, what is the difference between the setup that I mentioned before? What’s your reccomendation about my first synth? I am a totally noob...

  • @soffter

    @soffter

    I think both of those choices are great intro points for analog synthesis & sequencing. Personally, I think the Moog + sq1 will be a little bit more approachable from a learning standpoint, but what’s important is that you get what’s gonna make you happy! The minibrute is very fun, and is gonna afford you more patching options and a larger interface to interact with, which is def a factor to consider tho. I try to think about how I would see myself using the devices, like if the small pots on the korg and Moog might be frustrating compared to the big sliders and actual knobs on the minibrute. You’ll also need cabling and an audio interface if you don’t already have them tho, so saving money and using it for that is another consideration! Both are excellent options, choose what’s gonna be best for you, not what other people THINK is best for you ❤️

    I am very disappointed with the Mavis, specifically the cheap plastic enclosure. A big step down for Moog.

    Bought a Crave and sold it. However that’s a great talking point. The Crave is $220 and a solid build, unlike the Mavis. Disappointed in Moog on this one.

  • @SomeOne-pd6vm

    @@spdycar13 I don't think it's really fair to compare the two. The Crave is entirely copied from the Mother 32s circuitry in every way except for the oscillator chip (which sounds 99% identical). The Crave is also mass produced in a factory in China. So of course with minimal R&D costs and access to mass factories the Crave is going to come out cheaper than any Moog could hope to be. The end product as far as value goes is always going to favour Behringer. That said I also don't think the case matters so much as this is more so meant to me mounted in a Eurorack case. This is about as budget as Moog could realistically go and for that it's a pretty good value.

  • @spdycar13

    @@SomeOne-pd6vm True, they are not comparative as synths. My point is more about the quality of the materials used. A metal case would not have cost that much more to produce, especially if they skipped the cover. If they intended for it to be a racked module then they should not have included an enclosure and cover at all. The cover is useless if you mount it in a rack. I might be ok with plastic on a Moog but the plastic they used is just cheap junk. It will crack easily especially if you carry it in a bag as they demonstrated when touting portability. It seems like they had two different visions for the Mavis and couldn’t make up their minds so they tried to do both and in the process compromised quality. Their other rack mountable modules have always had nice enclosures. I’ve never seen Moog use plastic so it just seems like a big step down for them.
