    Once that DFAM triangle folding kicked in, I was sold. I need this exact setup. So many timbres, so many mod possibilities, and it does drive the output very well. That moog lader filter is still such an icon too! And doubly so when folding it afterwards. Like, "New Death Grips just dropped" gritty. So good!

    I have a DFAM and a Mother 32 in my euro setup and I honestly don’t have any issues with it. I tune my oscillators basically to whatever the lowest note I want and I haven’t run into any issues. I guess you prob can’t use all the octaves but honestly how often do people need to span more than 5 octaves? Also if it is an issue Erica synths makes a +/-5 to 0-10 converter module that is relatively affordable for a euro module

But I'd be really interested to see what you could do with some cheaper gear like the Behringer crave for example or behringer td-3. What to put them to and how to enhance them. Maybe talk about why they are cheap. Behringer is like the gateway drug to many of us so I'm interested in your perspective after year's working with higher end equipment.

    Love your video style, thanks for this demo! So I have a Hydrasynth 49 key, which has two CV inputs and five CV outputs, but I have never used them before. I am also new to the world of semi-modular. Do you think I could use the Hydra keyboard to play the Mavis, and do you think it would be a worthwhile combo? I do not have a Moog sound in my synth collection yet (Korg Monologue, NTS-1, and Yamaha Reface CS). Maybe one day I'll get the Matriarch, but that's a ways down the road for me.

  • @Zepheriah

    @Zepheriah

    You can definitely use the Hydra to control a Mavis. As for whether you need one: I have the Hydra Desktop and the Moog Werkstatt, and honestly it’s impossible to hear the difference between them if I set the hydrasynth to moog-like settings. It might make most sense for you to get something fundamentally different from a hydrasynth, like a physical modelling voice, or a sampler. On the other hand, I do use both the Hydra and the Moog in my live system because I love the moog tone enough to have a dedicated unit for that, and keep the hydrasynth for other things. And there’s something fun about having a real piece of moog kit to play with. Moog and Hydrasynth have very different design philosophies, and give you two very different (and very good) playing experiences, even when they’re sounding similar.

    @@Zepheriah 🙏 Thank you for this thoughtful reply!! That second paragraph totally makes sense to me, I've encountered other situations like that. And I could see a Mavis + Hydra combo working similarly for me. On a semi related note, I was able to try a Mavis as well as an East Beast (similar product in terms of price and semi modular) in my local shop today. The Mavis's build quality felt very nicely solid, even the tiny knobs. But I'm def going to want to put bigger caps on them, ha. The East Beast was fun and packed a lot of features for the price, but I didn't vibe with its design quite the same way. I also think the panel text was too difficult to read over the background graphics...anyways, I digress. I think I'm leaning towards the Mavis. Thanks for the feedback!

    If I didn’t already have a Werkstatt, I probably would. But that is a lot to pay for a waveshaper and a bigger patch bay, and its fitting in a modular case is not a selling point if you’ve not got the hp to spare. Loved that tuner though!

    Routing the oscillator to the S+H is one of those “why didn’t I think of this myself” moments. This is gonna provide me with hours of fun on my Neutron while I save for a Mavis- which is, more or less, exactly what I’ve been looking for in a semi-modular synth.

    Neutron + Mavis looks like fun. I have the 904A VCF which works nicely with the Neutron. I use the Neutron as a sound engine for my Roland AE-30 wind synth.

    Did you have to do any extra attunement with the keystep after you assembled the Mavis or did they both play nicely (tracking etc) out the box?

    I didn’t test the tracking but it should be good out of the box

    What up size is the row you have the Mavis and DFAM in. This is one of the reasons I am really considering getting the Mavis.

    Get a powered (eg integrated power) 104HP case and it’ll take both! As it’s 44+60hp - or get a 6U 104HP case would be my recommendation so you have some space below/above for other modules
