Yooo fancy seeing you here! I love your vids Ricky!
This instrument looks really cool, and I appreciate the way that Andrew is engaging with it - treating it as something that can be played but also almost like a collaborator sometimes. Approaching automation and abstraction with nuance is difficult, and I think this video does it really well.
moog always makes stuff that feels like a must have staple in any setup. love it!
This is crazy to see. I used to build Moog semi modular synths (Mother-32, DFAM, etc.) before they sold overseas (technically the modular is still made stateside but not many of us kept our jobs). Moog was releasing miss after miss due to some pretty incompetent management decisions and the company was nosediving. It's nice to see them release something good again even if they're still charging "Made int he USA" prices for products that aren't.
@henryhill92
25 күн бұрын
What were those misses? I know there were problems with the One, but the the Grandmother, DFAM and Matriarch were all pretty successful right? So there's what... the Subharmonicon and the software?
@andycook7220
25 күн бұрын
@@henryhill92 Even then I'd say the Subharmonicon is one of the most interesting, unique synths in the past decade. It's difficult to understand and use, and tricky to get really good results, but when you do get something it's unlike anything else out there, and for that reason alone I'd say its a really good synth. I can't think of any "misses" really either. Pricing is rough, but it always has been with MOOG.

The Moog One was a pretty big mess up. Lots of problems for something so expensive.
@manweilermusic
25 күн бұрын
@@andycook7220 I 100% agree that the Subharmonicon is a STELLAR synth... and actually think the basic to medium Subharmonicon patching is pretty easy to understand... I think it is much more intuitive with everything visible than modules like Stages .. or marbles with a lot of hidden functions and color coded leds needed to open up the module.. (and those are not that bad) .... especially if you learn one block of it at a time. It gets very powerful when you pair it with external gear or patch bay.........I think a lot of people who burn out on it in confusion try to do everything at once, and get nothing past a four note sequencer. I have been patching for 20 years, so this is a bit like a native language to me at this point, someone newer to the space may very much hit brick walls much quicker. but- the DEPTH that the subQ can hit. WOWOWOW!
@andycook7220

@@mikegeary8056 Definitely a fair point. Not sure I'ld call it a miss - sounds amazing when it works, but it's a fair criticism. I know one person with a One, and it's been to the shop for repairs twice in 5 years.
thanks andrew, nice demo of a synth that brings old and new aesthetics together is a great way.

I usually don't listen to all of Andrew's releases, but the snippets in this video clicked with me instantly and I just had to look it up and listen to it. Also very happy for a new gear video, one of my favorite genres on this channel!
Super neat! It will go on my wishlist as a possibility one day. Love the quick little overview while showcasing what you created.
I’m so glad wavefolding is now part of the new Moog standard. Moog and Andrew both dropped another banger(s)!
The intro alone was so cool
Nice video Andrew and great music stuff. Well done!
Ep is awesome been watching your videos a long time but never actually heard something this is fire ❤🔥
I like the drum like and percussion sounds you’re getting out of this
Thanks for your review... this is exactly what i was looking for about this synth...
I didn’t see a Moog Turing Machine coming, but it’s cool.. love their take on it.
Get Warp Records on that EP stat!
Hey Andrew! I've been watching your videos for years, and I've gotta say, you've become one of my favorite, and most inspiring musicians of all time. Your natural interest, and talent in music is something that I've been yearning for ever since I found your channel. The way that you can pick up almost any instrument, and make it sound like you've spent all your life mastering it, is something that only a handful of people are able to do. You've been inspiring me to learn about and explore more and more instruments ever since I first saw your 26 genre song challenge videos with Dave😁 I'm also very much looking forward to the next First Of October, Love from Hungary!❤🤘🇭🇺
I know REEEAAALLLLYYYYY want a Labyrinth!! Love the new EP too by the way, perfect music to work to!

woah the camerawork during the intro is sick! love the EP too
Finally a synth that actually uses probability in a cool and different way. Love it. I've done a bunch of VCV modules, including sequencers and they uses probability a lot, for all kinds of semi random stuff.
Popped the EP in the queue to listen to- sounds awesome!
Great collaboration! It sounds beautiful!
Listening to the EP a second time and I love it! Congrats! Might compete with Monolith for my #1 ✨
Tasty tunes Andrew. Nice work. Will definitely check out your music.
Moog lifted the embargo..
I am buying this album! Great work through!
The sequncer what makes this device very special is based on stochastic inspiration generator ( stochastic instruments and melodicer ( Vermona) they borrowed huge from those eurorack modules.
Best labyrinth “demo” Always with the best content. Congrats on the EP
Get lost... in the labyrinth! This sounds like a unit that inspires a lot and really get you in other parallel universes over and over again! Thanks for the vid and great sounding EP as well.

The snippet from the EP sounds very Skee Mask-esque, awesome stuff! Moog really hit it out the park with this one!

I’m not sure if this is what you guys were going for but the Labyrinth EP sounds inspired by Aphex Twin's Drukqs. You two did a really great job of capturing the mood of that albums Drill N Bass tracks while bringing in new unique components, and I'm ALL for it.

7:50 - wow this part is amazing! Would be perfect for like a 2D video game fight scene.
The Labyrinth seems to be a perfect companion to the DFAM, was really hoping to see that duo in this video. Alas, I might have to make my own review with those devices since I can’t seem to find a single video with both. Otherwise, really enjoyed this exploration of the newest Moog!

Thank you! So stoked to hear that!
Funny how the first moog I might actually buy is nothing like a moog. Lol. Great video.
The sequencer is a Turing Machine. If you want to try that style of sequencer without spending 600 bucks; 2hp makes a Turing Machine module. I use the 2hp TM with an Erica Synths Pico Quant. I think I need a second TM for controlling filter cutoff.
@KNHSynths
25 күн бұрын
That's right. IMHO the best is an Ornament & Crime with Phazerville firmware. You can use at the same time a TM with quantization and VCO, LFO or even mini drumkit on the other side. And there are lots of Shift Registers applets you can chose, or Euclidean rhythm generators. But for people who are not in the modular game, this Moog can seem fantastic (but it just seems).
@snorrevonflake
25 күн бұрын
Yea i thought i could do most of that with my eurorack stuff. But much more expensive if you ad modules for everything in there, filter, oscillators, wavefolder, some random gate thing, mixers....
Loved the EP! I didnt even know it was out until I saw it suggested to me on Spotify. I didn't even know this video was an album announcement. I would have never watched this (bc its yet another review of another piece of exorbitantly expensive music gear) if I hadnt googled where the album came from. Maybe lead with the album announcement? 😅
Love the Aphex vibes
So do you just record the midi and rely on that to be able to reproduce the sequence? Because if it’s continuously generative how do you use to repeat a song you’ve created. I love generative sequences but I’ve been confused how to use for tracks to play again and again
EP is actually really good
How do you feel about this vs something like teletype for random cv sequence generation?
What effect was used to create that graphic motion behind the EP cover?
I think it's past time to recognize what an excellent IDM producer Andrew is. The last few years of releases have been excellent.

a sequencer with a mind of it's own !!. interesting
So it's kind of a Turing Machine'esque tool. Cool vid.
I realize I could google this but sometimes I feel like it's better to hear others favorites; are there any artist who implement this for actual thought out songs or is it really just for the infinite randomization. from what I have seen these things loop well enough but its never anything that is melodic or enjoyable to listen to IMO. obviously I know there are people who like really out there sounds and tracks but Im looking for more precise uses of them?
this looks rad. wish there was a screen to see the bpm but its supposed to be an oldschool style synth so I get it.
Wild. x
Love the ep, glitchy and super clean and dirty 😅 love electronoc music whice is diffrent from melodic electronic music 😊
I always see you playing around with these cool and exciting modular synths and it looks like a lot of fun but in my own personal experience which is none at all, how do I even start setting these up so that I can get to step one😭
