Justin Hayward wrote this masterpiece in between classes while in college. He sat under the same tree for a total of 2 hours and during three classes and wrote this epic storyline. RIP Ray and Graeme....Enjoy these songs while you can. We are quickly losing the masters who wrote and performed them.

The band just has that effect on people. Like so many others, our parents grew up with them, liked them and then we had the privilege to hear them when we grew up. Now we are fans ourselves (privileged to have seen them perform live nd with an orchestra). Now I have the honor of introducing them to my students. They are absolutely timeless.

The best concert experience of my 74 years was in 1992 when the Moody Blues appeared at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in Houston (The Woodlands) with a 55-piece orchestra, and brought my kids with me. They had as much fun as I did, because, they grew up listening along with me, to all their albums.....an experience that will never be repeated.

Very haunting gut wrenching song for those that understand the lyrics he is expressing. "Nights in white satin never reaching the end" is reference to the satin sheets she bought him just before she broke it off. "Letters I have written never meaning to send" With 20 versions sitting in the trash he never mails his letter to try and gain her back. Why? "Just what the truth is I can't say anymore" Did she ever really love him? "Gazing at people some hand in hand" seeing others in love only brings back the pain. "Just what I'm going through you can't understand" Unless you have had a broken heart you can't understand. I cry every time I hear this song. I wonder where she is how she is doing. Damn this song all to hell its so beautifully written yet so haunting.

Justin Hayward indeed wrote and sang a masterpiece here! For more greatness from the Moody Blues please react to Tuesday Afternoon and The Question next!! And if you enjoyed hearing the flute in this song, and you certainly seemed to, I would like to recommend "Can't You See" from The Marshall Tucker Band and especially a live version from the late 190's of the band Jethro Tull doing "Locomotive Breath"!!! The song "Nights in White Satin" was originally released in 1968 by the Moody Blues. It was written by Justin Haywood who was new to the band at that time. This version was this version was performed 33 years later by The Moody Blues with Haywood as lead vocalist. It was awsome in 1968. It was awsome in 200 and it is awsome still.

Can any other singer other that Justin Hayward say the words "I Love You" with any more profound meaning than in this song.I'm 66 years old and I still tear up with this song. I've seen the MB 5 times in concert and the 2001 at the Paul Mason Winery, Ca. I considered to be not one of, but the best in my life. With late teens on one side of me and my wife and an 80 year old on the other and we were all singing every word to every song. Dancing in the Aisle were the Ushers. A purely and truly multi generational band. A fan since 1975. You seemed so moved by the Flutist Ray Thomas who wrote many of their songs, here is one that reminds me of my late wife who passed away in 2009. Such a beautiful voice, kzread.info/dash/bejne/i6maj8yDerKrp6Q.html "for my Lady" about finding your love after many trials in your life, and Justin's Hayward's (lead singer) "forever Autumn" , losing it and walking alone and missing the foot steps that used to disturbed the leaves beside you , kzread.info/dash/bejne/Yn9mxJeMY8XHlrA.html .

Justin Hayward on guitar and lead vocals, John Lodge on bass and backup vocals, the late Ray Thomas (2018) on flute and backup vocals and the late Graham Edge (2021) on drums; contributing with poetic verses as well. Early founding member, Mike Pinder played the Mellotron (an electro-mechanical type of keyboard instrument), sang backup vocals and wrote some of the group's material as well. Pinder left the Moody Blues after the band recorded their Octave project in 1978 - right before the band was to go on tour for that album. Former Yes keyboard player, Patrick Moraz joined the group to replace Pinder, and played with them until 1991. Though he never did contribute to writing any of the band's material. Since then, the group has hired accompanying musicians whenever they toured. I believe this particular video was filmed at London's Royal Albert Music Hall. If you ever have the opportunity, you should listen to their album Days of Future Passed; which is their musical story of the events of an ordinary day. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on August 13,2018, seven months after the passing of Thomas. As Graham Edge would say . . . Keep on thinking free.

Just almost as good then though a rain and windstorm at this outdoor theater messed with us and we all had to take cover for a bit. They came back of and did a great job. Then about 25 years ago, I converted all my CDs (bought them too) to MP3, and they are on my phone, PC, in my car, etc. I never get over this great music. Lovely reaction to an all time classic, thank you. I completely agree you should react to 'Forever Autumn' by Justin on his own. Also I think you would love both 'And You and I' and 'Turn of The Century' both by 'Yes'. You have to listen to the studio recordings first tho, not live for the first time 😊

"Forever Autumn" was included as part of Jeff Wayne's musical version of "The War of the Worlds" an absolute masterpiece of an album.

I strongly suggest listening to Forever Autumn by Justin Hayward. He is the same singer as in this song, just without the rest of the band. It's a very haunting and emotional song.

It so reminds me of my late wife of 30 years who passed away in 2009. The only girl I ever kissed, I married and still the only girl, for me. We loved going for very long (all day) nature walks on the coast and Redwoods in California. Her leaves lay undisturbed now.

@@MatthewPettyST1300 It reminds me of the girl I almost married. Her and I are friends now at this time, but she lives in Brazil and I live in Canada, so we see each infrequently, and because of certain things that happened, the relationship will never be the same. Not a death of a person in my case, but the death of how I saw that person, with only the memories of those leaves remain. I'm sorry for your loss, I hope the song remains a good memory for you.

I notice a lot of recommendations for "Forever Autumn" which, I concur, is a great song. I recommend you look up the album "Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the 'War of the Worlds'" on which it is included as part of the story. One of my all time favorite albums. It is a masterpiece, imho.

You need to check put Justin Hayward (the vocalist you loved) Tuesday Afternoon series on youtube. He is 75 now and still kills it. Ray Thomas the flute player you loved passed away. But Justin has found another flute player who is amazing as well. Here is a link. There several videos of his work. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oINoqaeupM-pXag.html
