Such a beautiful tradition! This was always a favorite in our classrooms. It was especially wonderful when parents could come in and participate, but even when they just sent in pictures and stories, the kiddos felt so special that day. And their classmates really enjoyed getting to know them more. We often even had the other classrooms join in to really build that community. I hope we get the world back to a safe normal soon so Kylie can experience this in her school. I'm looking forward to incorporating this at home as well.

I did not go to a Montessori preschool, but I have vivid memories of my preschool teacher doing a version of the sun ceremony in our class. I don't remember anything on the floor to represent seasons/months, but the birthday kid held a blue or green ball and got to pick a friend to stand and hold a yellow ball for the sun. The teacher sang the song to the Farmer in the Dell tune as well :) I had no idea it was Montessori related, so fun since it made a big impression on me but I only had that teacher for a short while

This celebration is something I remember from when I attended a Montessori school about 20 years ago lol I remember holding a small globe and walking around a circular rug while the teacher read something about the earth making it’s way around the sun. I so can’t wait to do this with my own daughter in May!

I teach a straight Montessori Kindergarten class virtually. Still being able to help celebrate student birthdays has been so much fun! We still sing the songs and I request parents to send me pictures and then I make a slideshow to display. We follow that with a dance party of course! The first song is the childs favorite song!

Thank you so much for sharing this... It's a wonderful way to celebrate and make them understand what there is to really appreciate about their special day. Birthdays have a whole new meaning once you become parents. It reminds me of the moment that my son was born, when i first saw him, when i first held him and how tears just started rolling down out of nowhere. As if it happened just yesterday. I don't think that memory is going to fade anytime in this lifetime. God bless your little girls 😘

Ashley and Mike, Its so apparent that your patience and love [and hard work] is reflected in your girls respectfulness and I notice their patience too. I love how you incorporate learning as a fun Birthday tradition, it helps the girls better understand their life as well as time and our universe. I rewatched your August fire-works vlog and Kyley is so up on planets esp ''Pluto no longer a planet planet''. Adorable. Mia got the walking around the sun down pat, LOL. As they get older, I envision both girls getting creative with you, making different symbols for their yearly walk around, maybe using calendars or holiday pictures, etc. Its esp celebratory talking about their 'firsts'. Happy Birthday no.4 to Kylie and Happy Birthday no.2 to Mia, two of my very favorite little youtube stars.

I still can't believe you have a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old. Didn't you just have a two-year-old and a newborn? And of course Mia is traveling around the sun by herself. I mean, you're trying to keep her to going around twice and, didn't you hear, she's three? Hahaha. Is there any kind of president to making the child's Birthday month/season a different color or marking it in some way as a visual reminder to start/stop at that point?

My daughters story from the heven to the earth went like - There was a pikler triangle. And when they climb on it, it represented their death from their previous life. Then when they were up represented the heven. When they came down ,it represented their going to my womb. When they came down The slide came on a matress full of pillows and comfy thins giving the feeling of the womb, then they had to go through their crawling tunnel to reach their gifts which were really minimal It was on the end to represent thier coming on the land. It did not have a lot of information about her after born life. So we also did the previous thing. She and even her friends LOVED it My mother told this was the key to have a meaningfull birthday.

You could do together if they insist on it, but since it is the celebration of each child's life, we typically celebrated each child separately in our school. Parents would present seperate fun stories about each one, to really highlight that they're individuals. But again, if they really want to participate together, follow the child and do that!

The months are placed around the Sun counterclockwise, which is the direction of the Earth when turning around the Sun. As what is celebrated is the life of the child, her travel around the sun begins from his birth (in Kylie's case, from March to March) As many turns around the sun as years of life have the girl. 😉

There isn’t any one link, I just watched a bunch of KZread videos and tried to copy a photo we saw on Pinterest. What specifically would you like a link to, so I can try to find it and share it?

Why not call it a "celebration of the self" or "celebration of the flesh"?

Montessori does not have a religious affiliation-this celebration is not worshiping the sun but demonstrating the concept of "a year" in a concrete way to children. The Earth rotating around the sun is an abstract concept that children cannot grasp, so this is a way for them to see it played out-not a worshipping of anything.

I second exactly what @Maria and Montessori said - there is no “worshipping” of any kind.

This ceremony is totally secular, only serving to help a young child understand the scientific fact that our chronological age correlates to the revolution of our planet around the sun.
