Konami showed off a lot of Silent Hill 2 Remake recently. It has some promising stuff. Unfortunately, a lot of that promise is of bad, bad nonsense.

  • @ChristopherSadlowski

They already think the public doesn't want Silent Hill, that's why they're doing a remake. They cancelled the game that was supposed to grow out of PT for...reasons. Some MBA chud probably did some "focus group" bullshit, most likely mandated to find any reason to not spend the money on a new game in the franchise, because shunting a remake of an already existing game to a third party was cheaper. So if this flops they could say, "see, we were right!" Or if it does well they could say, "see, no one wanted PT, they just wanted remakes!" This constant churn of making things that already exist and that, in many cases, I already played and don't want to play again with better graphics, has pushed me to largely not buy anything anymore. Gamers™️ are killing the medium for me because they're not very smart and they don't know how to articulate what they actually want. There's also the racism, misogyny, and homophobia that's poisoning the groundwater too...

Everything I have mentioned and more would be carved out and sold separately now. There was a video I watched a while back where the is a growing trend reemerging of people playing older games, really anything before 2010ish? the BLUF was the simplicity of it all. If anyone can find a way to frame abusers as sympathetic (like Abstract Daddy) and blame a victim of sexual abuse (like Angela), it's Bloober Team. I looked on Ebay for the PAL version of Silent Hill 2 and the first result is €99.99 (plus €15.99 shipping from Portugal). Until the OG PC version comes to GOG (which you can add the Enhanced Edition mod), piracy IS the only ethical option people have. If Konami can bring back musician Akira Yamaoka and monster artist Masahiro Ito but not the original game's director Masashi Tsuboyama, character designer Hiroyuki Owaku or writer Takayoshi Sato on board to tell off Bloober Team's top brass and staff whenever they do something stupid, then why should we support the official release?

I mean, at the time Silent Hill was DARK and touched on things that were considered completely inappropriate for the medium. Like all new artistic mediums it eventually matured to the point that really traumatic subject matter is fine to portray and more people are more aware of mental health stuff now, but back then this game was subversive. It could also just be that Japanese sense of humor I don't get. Either way there was most likely a point to the NG+ silliness in the original Silent Hill.

The scene when James finds Angela in the cementery presented at the 2024 Sony showcase was devoid of any of the artistic merits the original SH2 had: the carefully picked camera angles for each part of the scene, the eerie way they moved and expressed with their bodies, the strange way they talk and the nuances of the acting that allowed you to know something was wrong with both Angela and James, all these elements combined created were carefully mix in the original to give the player a message. Even the facial expressions expressions are missing... The cinematic artistry (borrowed from films like Jacob's Ladder) has been thrown into the trash in the remake... And sadly I expect the review outlets who are easily impressed by shiny graphics to give glowing reviews to the game without taking into account how much of the artistry and what made the original SH2 a masterpiece was thrown into the trash... And with RNGesus as my witness I will prophetize that SH2 will be in Fortnite because corpos don't care about context .

Given that it was always "the review outlets" who championed SH2 and 3, while they both sold poorly, I doubt they're the ones who will give this positive reviews just because the graphics have a lot of polygons. The first SH was the only game to be both a critical and commercial success; 2, 3, and 4 all reviewed well with publications, but the general public didn't care. It's the 'influencer'-types, who rush to pre-order deluxe editions and stream everything based on how many hairs can be counted on a character's head, that will be the ones missing the point.

The guns don't have enough punch, melee attacks don't have any impact, the combat looks very mashy, and the character models look like they belong on a ps3 game at best. This is the most effort Konami has put into one of their ips in a while, and even then, it's still underwhelming. I doubt the October 8th date will be enough to get the game up to speed. I've already resolved that I'm not going to buy this game. If it's somehow good I might wait and pick it up over half off next year or something if I really want to play. They are trying to make it like this remake is for "both fans and newcomers" meanwhile the entire fan base has been pretty consistent with saying "we don't want this. Just release the original games on Steam already!" So it's definitely not for the fans.

You hit on something I appreciated with FF7 Rebirth: Not only were its alt costumes in game and not an extra purchase, but for your first playthrough they relegate the use of the costumes to just the Costa del Sol area. That way Barret isn't in a sailor suit for the Dyne stuff and Cloud isn't in beachware for Aerith's death. However, once you unlock New Game+, they then unlock the option for players to use whatever outfits they want at any point. So, it's not spoiled for your first playthrough, you don't have to spend any extra on them, but when you return to the game for future playthroughs, they give you freedom to customize it how you like.

I'm gonna go ahead and do everyone a service and tell you where the 10:35 image comes from. It's a movie called "Deathgasm" and the guy with upside down cross paint on his face actually showed up to this "date, but not a date" as a means to dress up for an important event. Also this movie has a band play a song straight out of Evil Dead which causes the town to turn into deadites.

Context does matter. Fortnite and Multiversus are prominent examples. But even going to something like Overwatch. Having these heroes who are supposed to be fighting for the fate of the future wearing bikinis and using a squirt gun takes something from the experience. Skins are cool. But it doesn't take long for the Microtransaction arms race to end up where Team Fortress 2 did with a pile of flaming hats with a giant skull orbiting them glued unceremoniously to the head of every character.

I made sure to avoid all mention of this Konami update, like I do with all announcements these days, because it's a quite simple formula - the triple A space is dogshit, and I'm not wasting time on hope when the chances of the results being shite are FAR FAR higher than good. If it's good, I'll simply wait until it comes out and people review it well. I'll find out then.

Shameless self plug - I'm working on a horror game that deals with topics of mental illness. Its make made in close collaboration with a dear friend who has the illness and I'm taking great care to represent the particularities of their experience. As I'm getting close to the end of that project, I've also begun some early work on a SH2 inspired game with psx/ps2 style graphics, a narrative about addiction, and a distinctly Aussie flavor. In short, I and many other indie devs are making psychological horror games with the care and attention they deserve, so check out what they have to offer!

The Dog Costume is what "The Desert of the Real" looks like. Multi-verses is what "The Desert of the Real" looks likes. The Droogs getting front row seats to watch Bugs Bunny is what "The Desert of the Real" looks like. I'm not quoting The Matrix. I'm reference the work they stole that phrase from, Baudrillard's "Simulacra and Simulation". Instead of being copies or parodies of the ideas they reference, they have become "Simulacra": a symbol which bares no relation to the reality they reference at all. These Simulacra replace the real & their context with a simple easily commodificable & reproducible product which only exist to generate profit for their owners. The Desert of the Real is where every grain of sand is something that meant something to someone once, ground down to nothing in the pursuit of profit over art and meaning. We can pickup a handful of sand and recognize what the grains were as they slip through our fingers, everything that made them real already lost in the wind.

You're right. It is hopeless. It's not getting better. There's no coming back. It's not going to go away, and Lord knows it can't be defeated... There's nothing left... no reason to stay, to try, to continue to fight... it was over before it began. We're only prolonging the inevitable... Maybe death IS the only way out... Maybe that's the real "psychological horror": the realization that art is dead while business gleefully flails around its rotting corpse, calling it "better art"? But that's giving them too much credit.

Hey uh...do you need someone to talk to? Like no offence but you sound like you're dealing with some very heavy depression at the moment. Now I understand how you're feeling at the moment as I took am dealing with similar grief (in part) in how the state of media is in such an dire state. It sucks to see things we cherish go to pot, it really does. But I feel venting about it towards strangers via an KZread comment and considering death is not gonna help. Trust me I'm at the edge too. So may I recommend perhaps seeking group therapy? I have yet to attend one myself (as there's irl matters in the way) but a friend of mine who was also going through a depressive episode themselves went to those that did help with such emotional baggage by talking towards others dealing with similar problems and finding comfort knowing they're not alone. I dunno if will find the exact solution that problem (knowing the forces at play here), but finding kinship in those hardships can heal that pain.

Just to make sure I’m not misinformed, I thought the character and monster redesigns are based on the original concept art for Silent Hill 2. Those being done by both Masahiro Ito and Takayoshi Sato. In addition, I thought Masahiro Ito was working directly with Bloober Team to avoid any narrative issues with the intent and implementation of his monster designs. I think we should all just take a deep breath and see what happens. There are far worse things going on in the world right now. If anyone is reading this, I hope all is well with you and yours. ❤
