Hi everyone thanks for watching - unfortunately I realise there is an issue with the audio when we uploaded the video where it is coming out of one side (mono), I can’t see a way to fix this but if you watch on a pc you can change the settings on audio to hear it from both sides - sorry for the inconvenience and I hope you still enjoy this review

@@Justin-fk6br Hi buddy, I put in the pinned comment we had a major tech issue on this video and by the time it was released it was too late to fix. We massively apologise for this issue but recording in stereo was distorting the sound so we had to record this as a one-off in mono. Problem is now it only works through one speaker. This can be changed in settings in YT but totally understand the frustration. Fixed for next video

@@creedlionheart6250 Make no bones about it this is an incredible game. I think as value is a part of our review process, I think this is a little on the expensive side. Also if you look at games where we have scored 10s you have a game like Hollow Knight which is incredible in every way. A 50+ hour campaign for about 12 bucks is insane. It would have been great to have some audio in the voice too but these are just nitpicking. I think a 9 is a great score for this and fully recommended. Thanks for checking out our channel!

When you put your phone vertically the sound cuts out but when you have it straight up and down it’s ok!

I would say this is the best 2D platformer I have played. I have been waiting 30 years for this game to come.. a true sequel to The Dragons Trap.

I don't know if you know them but if not, I suggest you to look for Wonder boy IV (WB in Monster World) and Monster World IV, both are official sequels to WB3 Dragon's trap. But yeah, this one is a very worthy successor to the series!

I honestly just cant wait for these guys to make another Wonder Boy game. I love that the story of this game picked up off of Wonder Boy 4 and Monster World 4. I would love to see the progression of the story further into the future, also cameos would be awesome too. I would also love to see Remakes for Wonder Boy 2 Monster Land and Wonder Boy 4 Monster World. They both have aged well, but after seeing how good the remake of Wonder Boy 3 was, I would love to see the other games in the franchise get the same treatment.

Great review, gents. Been looking forward to this for a loong looong time. Absolutely love the art-style. A bit on the expensive side, though, so I might wait for a sale or something.

20 dollars on switch Eshop right now

This game totally reminds me of playing Wonder Boy on the Sega Genesis as a kid. Lots of fun, the character movement controls have a comfortable flow to them. Also the graphics are stunning, especially the hand drawn parts. Very well done game.

My all time favorite would have to be dust an Elysian tale, an amazing game with amazing combat beautiful hand done art and an interesting story

im stuck in the volcano part at the moment got two areas i can go to but one chest is locked by a gate after some lava platforms you can walk over with ice, the opposited area theres a lava fountain but i cant access it any help>

I have one question about this remake: does it feature the ability to switch back and forth between modern graphics/sound and original graphics/sound on the fly, like Lizardcube's remake of Dragon's Trap did? That small feature went a long way to help me appreciate the level of attention to detail they put into the game, and a similar function in this one would make me giddy. If not, it's not a deal-breaker; just a curiosity.

No, this is a brand new game so there's no retro style to go back to 😃

Great video ,besides the audio, and honestly the theme song alone convinced me to get this because it looked like a fun adventure. My only problem with this is when switching between the animal forms and magic you can't quick switch between them. Instead you have go to the character select and pick the animal you want. I'm a bit of a fast player when it comes to games like this so the fact that I have to go to character select and pick the animal I want is a bit annoying. But on the other hand I can just change to the animal I want instead of cycling though them so it sorta evens it out I guess. Other than that and a few gotcha moments the game is fantastic. Also favorite platformer Super Mario 3D Land. I don't know maybe it's because of the dense level design or because it controls like a dream, but I always find myself coming back to it every now and then years after I 100% it.

Thank you very much, yeah after you get a few more spells you can’t quick switch which would have been a nice little addition

right click, click on audio channels, set it to either left or right depending on what a/b audio you have on. if done properly your a and b audio will be even instead of your voice coming in through my left ear while gameplay comes through my right.

Man...i have 39 yo and i felt so nostalgic watching this! Wonder boy in Monster land 4 and 5 were one of my favourite games back in the time and this one doesn't seem to disappoint to anyone who like platform games. Great review

Nice review. I did notice the audio and thought it was the speakers on my phone at first haha the game is on sale right now for 13.99 and this convinced me to buy it.

Easy, Wonder boy in Monster world on sega Genesis. The graphics are soooo beautiful! And the scale of the game is brilliant! And the music .. o god the music!

Great review... May give this a go when the price comes down here in the UK. Got everspace on pre order and may even give smash a go first as well. Streets of rage 2, golden axe 2, revenge if shinobi and alien storm, T2 judgement day were my favs as a kid!

I picked up this game a while back but didnt play it as i was busy with luigi’s mansion 3, started this yesterday and this game has alot of depth. I really am enjoying it.

I don't really play many platform game but my favourite would be Castle of Illusion Staring Mickey Mouse because I have such fond memories of playing it way back when.

Thank you! Yes unfortunately I had a technical issue - I’ve changed audio equipment and heard the video come through in stereo but when uploading it came out in mono, sadly I can’t change it now so I’ve just pinned a comment - now that I know the issue I will fix for the next one

Voice audio is only on the left side. The rest of the audio is balanced. Great review as always. I appreciate how you guys and a few other channels dedicate this much to review indies and non-AAA titles. The switch library grows too fast, i wish i have enough money to buy what i need, and enough time to play them. :D

@@55ense5imulation4 yeah, I got it about one year ago. Fortunately I was able to find a used copy (like new) for $40. But I know today you won't find it for a fair price anymore. If i hadn't found it physical for a good price, I would surely have bought it digital

So they can be used with the loot master npc, what they do is place a marker on your map to some nice hidden loot

My absolute favorite platformer is the Hudson's Adventure Island so now I'm checking out the Wonder Boy series.

The pig looks like the shopkeeper in WB3: The Dragon's Trap.

Great video. I still have to say my favorite platformer of all time is Sonic and Knuckles 3. Second is probably Raymen Legends, and third is Shante Half-Genie Hero

If we’re talking classic, level-based platformers, then I’d have to say Shovel Knight, with DKC: Tropical Freeze in a close second place, but if metroidvanias are allowed, then Dust: An Elysian Tail.

Both great games, although Monster Boy has a lot more content and modernisation. Should get both though!

Do you recommend this IF you have already played and enjoyed Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap? I loved the Wonder Boy remake, I just wonder because this seems REALL similar. Great review. :)

This is probably better. Dragon's Trap is just as beautiful and contains many similar elements, but as it's based on a very old game (practically 1-to-1) it's more modest in what it has to offer. It's more simple and brief. Still a nice game though.

Hmm, if I remember some of the comments from the developers in the devblog correctly, this isn't just a spirital successor (however, it started that way) but an official successor with a proper license from SEGA. You can read the name SEGA on the title screen. And you can especially hear the result it in the soundtrack. Many pieces of the background music come from older Wonderboy games.

That is true, but due to the change in name, we feel it's more like a spiritual successor. Either way, doesn't really matter, just a great game 👍

The developer just announced this today "FDG Entertainment has announced that Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom will be coming to PlayStation 5. On PlayStation 5, the game will be upgraded with native 4K support while also running at 120FPS using HDMI 2.1 for some super-slick platforming action. FDG Entertainment will also confirmed they be offering the next-gen version of the game as a free upgrade for all players who have already purchased the title. With 2D games such as Monster Boy already looking great on current-gen hardware, it's good to know that there's room to upgrade further with 120FPS support, although you will need a TV or monitor that supports such high frame rates to see the results!"

This game is currently on sale on the switch for 17.99 form it’s original price of 39.99

My favourite platformer is Celeste. Such a tight, well made game with a suprisingly emmotional story and jaw dropping music and visuals.

​@@markxv2267 Im only about an hour in at the mo, but so far this isn’t a patch on Celeste. The music is god awful, I had to turn it off just a minute or two into the game. Unless the story really opens up, so far its incredibly basic an uninspiring. Mechanically it seems OK, but the general feel of it feels like a cheap phone platform rather than a £35 game. Ill stick at it, but IM having some buyers remorse at the mo and think I might have waster £35. If this was under £20 I wouldn’t feel so bad.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL game and on par with Hollow Knight in terms of art, quality and fun factor (from initial impression). I will buy it after Smash for certain. Thanks for the review. Favorite platformer: Super Metroid followed by Symphony of the Night (cliche I know, but the absolute truth)

I loved ori and the blind forest and ori and the will of the wisps I might give this one a try.

Does this game have an easy mode like Iconoclasts where you can enjoy yourself without getting frustrated like in Wonder Boy The Dragon's Tale?

This was my dream that didn’t come to fruition on the Wii U. The games of the 80s and 90s re-done with new graphics and gameplay. Now I just need Kid Icarus, Ghost n goblins, new Mario games, more Zelda and old style platformers! So glad I got a Switch, just hope it doesn’t die out like the Wii did!

Sounds great. I'll pick it up to keep me going in between sessions of Smash Bros and the never ending RDR2.

This game is a sure must have. But the physical version of this game from what I heard was delayed to next year. I wouldn’t mind getting the game digitally but alas this is one of switch’s major problem, the storage capacity. I recently bought doom & wolfenstein 2 due to the digital sale event that occurred on the eshop, both taking 21.9GB off of my 128GB. Followed afterwards that just yesterday an RPG collection of 3 games came up on the eshop which in total took up the switch’s storage and the remaining space I had on my SD card leaving me with nothing. *sigh* Nevertheless great review. I’ll wait patiently for the physical version of this wonderful well crafted indie title. Wonder boy dragons trap was excellent given the fact I never played the original.

We feel that pain every day my friend. We have huge memory cards and even then have to archive a lot of stuff. The devs did have issues with the physical release from reading their blog but that's why it was delayed to December 4th. Originally was supposed to release in November. There has not been anything further in terms of the Physical being delayed though. We would usually be notified.

SwitchWatch oh, my mistake. Yeah the physical version of the game is actually available now here in retail stores. Looking forward to getting it now. Definitely hope that if there’s ever an improved switch. One of the improvements has to be for storage capacity especially with how costly the AAA 3rd party games on switch is when it comes to the storage consumption.

Well right now the game is on sale on the Switch at $20 (50% off) so I'm gonna have to go ahead and get it. Coincidentally Wonder Boy and the Dragon's Trap is also on sale for $8 (normally $20) on PS4 so I think I might go and grab that one too.

Yeah apologies, basically I switched audio setup and didn’t get the settings right - can’t go back and change it

Sound is only left channel

Why is the mixing so uneven in this video? I'm not sure it is intentional...but it is really distracting to have narration on one channel only, and not have any at all over-top of the game's sounds on the other channel. I would suggest mixing in a little voice over the game's audio. Thanks

Honestly, I kinda liked it, but lamented having some voice in the other channel. Hah. Funny, some part in the video, a cut was made where you spoke one word in the right(?) channel. =0. Great review though. Really enjoyed it!

Bought the game a second time on Switch 😊. I enjoying it more on Switch instead of my Xbox One 😁

Great video but 0 negatives? It feels more like an ad than a review. Again fantastic video, excellent quality, extremely informative but not even any nitpicking? Even 10/10 games have flaws.

Length, roughly 15 hours. $40 so not terribly valuable. Though still it looks like its probably worth the money.

Thanks Spider Guy - as above I mentioned no replay ability and shortish length and the cost is a little high, if I was going to be super critical the other thing would be voice overs might of been nice but with the great audio in the background it didn’t bother me as it has on other games where the dialogue text becomes boring

Favorite platformer of all time, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, no question. For 2D Platformers anyway.

Not that the remake wasn't fun itself though - I do like the look of this too though.

Still the best of them all and still worth buying $29.99 no discount. They need the fundings after all.

Beautiful music and graphics. Simple but fun gameplay. Story is a little cheesy but whateve. Enjoyable. 6.75 outa 10. It ain't Hollow Knight, but it was fun enough to play to the end and find every secret. Better than most games.

Castlevania - Symphony of the Night is my #1 favorite platformer of all time. #2 is Super Metroid and #3 is Demon's Crest. The Wonder Boy games fall into my top 4-10. With Monster Boy being #4.

It's $40 though. I just got DB Fighterz for that and $15 Hollow Knight has spoiled me. I'm on the fence about this. What do u guys think?

I like it a lot better than Hollow Knight. It has so many puzzles and unique areas and mechanics. Well worth $40 imo. I also think the advertised 15 hour length is low. It's closer to 20.

@@GotNextVideo I ended up buying it. I don't regret it. For me, I would place it below Hollow Knight and Shantae 1/2. The art is the best of the three, and it's much more puzzle oriented, but I really like combat in my metroidvania games and combat is too simple for me. However, I really like the walking around and looking at the art and the whimsical and simple story is extremely likeable.

Combat gets a lot better once you unlock the fighter classes (frog and later). The pig is not much fun to fight as because he's slow and has no reach.

im impressed you mentioned the original.. at 45 yrs old , my favourite arcade machine was wonderboy, might look cute, but that game was hardcore. and to understand the winning mechanic, all i will say is grab a copy on mame, get the skateboard...and make it last through as many levels as you can (you keep the skateboard thru levels if you dont get hit). however..when the two companies split..the monsterboy side of the company became a platform rpg-lite . it split the loyal fans in two. the nearest we got to the arcade again was 'adventure island' on genesis/megadrive (there is also the wonderboy remake on ps4 but its dogshit, cant even keep the skateboard after levels.yknow...the whole game mechanic). the rpg favoured home consoles more..and here we are now with monsterboy. i will never forgive the split, im the ar ade side. but i wish it well.

Shantae is heavily inspired by Monster World II, and this game is an official sequel to that game, so it makes sense. They share a common ancestor.
