Since you asked 11 Month ago, you might already figured it out. 1x digital = 6 times optical. 3 x digital emulates 18 times optical.

The important issue to consider is the field of view of each one. In the case of 4.5x40 is 9.5 m at 100 m and in 6x50 is 6.8 m at 100. Also depends on the level of detail you need, more magnification more detail.

@@friendsofhenllyslnrchrispa3507 The NV gear usually uses a fixed magnification because zoom elements in a lense really rob light availability. That is why in photography a fixed focus 50mm lense is around F-4 while a 50-200 zoom will be at F-4 even at the 50mm setting. The digital zoom in this case is simply enalrging the pixel elements for the eye, so that 1920 pixel wide image at 3x becomes a 640 pixel wide image, but each displayed pixel is 3X larger and therefore easier for the eye to see.
