Very nice images! One cannot change, the way one shoots! It's fixed! Sure another lens, camera, another local.. But your images will look similar! Enjoy! The phone a darn wonderful way. Snapseed, portability, extra power pack, needed, we in Toronto into sub zero temps! I one of few who don't like the Q series! Pleased you mentioned cheaper lens. Truth new Leica lenses require back to factory! Units glued! I still use film.. M3! 50mm Collapsible Summicron. and small compact digitals.. Bravo! happy New Year!

Thanks so much for watching. A very interesting perspective on how you see that the way we shoot is fixed. There are many things that can change the way we see the world. If we start to see the world differently we will shoot differently. It’s not just a different lens that can cause this but sometimes an experience in life. A bereavement, falling in Love, anger, empathy. Or just a new appreciation for tones, shadows and texture. We can walk around blinkered to many things that aren’t apparent because we just don’t see them. Sometimes a different lens or camera can spark the inspiration to shoot things we never thought about. Wonderful that you still shoot film. I do too! The M3 is a wonderful well made camera that is hard to beat. Thanks again for your comments! I really appreciate it.

How refreshing to hear about focal length rather than brand X camera or brand y lens. I’ve actually added to my 28mm (Leica Q) with an 85mm (f/f equiv) on an old Fuji X-T2 I love the concept of two small cameras in my bag with very different focal lengths. It keeps my brain challenged but I’m getting used to switching them around a couple of times during a day on the street.

Dear Paul, thank you very much for all the inspiration, all the good tips and thoughts, and your wonderful photography in 2023! The timeless, sometimes grainy photos really appeal to me. What I like are Kevin Mullins' photos. I configured my FUJI accordingly to end up with this image look. Some of your photographs remind me of that, too. Your best of selection is incredibly great! I like photos with at least some story telling. My favorites are: The man with the newspaper, and also the reflection of the man with a hat and a bandaged hand. Very first class... I wish you a perfect, happy new year and a successful + soulful photography! Best regards, Dirk

Seeing Your work I am NOW interested in getting back to My Roots.... I started shooting about 60 yrs ago I would bulk load Tri-X, because I felt that I had control of the process all of the way to prints, and I could afford to shoot as much as I wanted (I recently looked at thousands of old prints I am Stunned at their Imagery)... I did not realize that I learned to SEE in B&W!! BUT I DID!!! When digital came I shot in colour, BUT I feel that I have not really been as successful as I was in B&W (not Great, but not Bad) I think that I am going to try to just turn My viewfinder to Monochrome and DO IT :) :) :) ThankYou !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great photos … looking forward to more monochrom magic in 2024 ta very much! I’ve only been snapping for a year or so at 35 mm equivalent FOV with my X100V (monochrome JPEG’s natch) and quite like the change from the 28 mm FOV on my trusty iPhone 8. Thanks so much for watching the video and yeah the Q3 does rival the Q2M at those lower ISO’s and with a 1.7 aperture you can shoot pretty low. The Q2M really comes into its own from 800iso! But let’s face it, who really cares about noise in black and white images? Leica has a nice noise structure.

Happy new year Paul! Thanks as always for your suggestions and speaking from experience - and your work continues to amaze. I think I've been doing the opposite as I have the 28mm with Q3 and then 28, 50mm and 75mm with M11. I started in 1978 and was a 50mm guy all through until digital, but now hard to say I have a favorite, more for whatever the occasion calls for. I do like your end of year assessment of your work and how to improve for the next year. On another subject, I would love to see a future episode on how you convert and edit your color from the Q3 to monochrome in Lightroom. I enjoyed the one you did for the Q2M images, but there are more things in play and you have a real knack for bringing out the best in your subjects.

Thanks so much for watching. I agree it’s good to have more than one focal length depending on a shoot you do. My thing is more what do you carry as an everyday focal length. I think it’s good to stick with one for long enough for you to simply pick the camera up and know immediately what you will see through the viewfinder. I was a 50mm guy for many many years. I shoot 28mm as my every day but enjoy using a 50 still for some shoots.

Very nice photography, Paul. Variety is the spice of life. Years ago, I decided against buying a Fuji X100 simply for the reason that I could not live with a fixed lens camera. I went for an Olympus EM5 MKII ( well used ), and I still have it. The same philosophy has prevented me dishing out for a Q2, as fine a camera that it is, I need lenses in the 28mm~80mm range, same as my Leica M film and digital cameras. Perhaps one day an M Monochrome, but god almighty, those prices!

  • @paulreidphotography

It’s certainly a big commitment to buy a fixed lens camera. Let alone a one that only shoots in black and white! Added to that the price of a Leica and even I think I’m crazy for doing that 3 years ago

@@paulreidphotography Hey Paul, you really got the point. I shoot b&w film since beginning 80’s so guess there did start my journey as monochrome junkie!! Funny that Leica can give images a special ‘Leica’ vibe using the same sensors as other manufacturers do. Sure, the M8’s Kodak CCD and original M9 and M9M sensor are a breed apart. I am trying to get a M9M to replace my M8, I really love the M8, but the FF Monochrome sensor of the M9M will suit my work even more!

Paul : the Q-2 and Q-3 use different sensor sciences , what is the best one ? a color sensor that is doing Monochrome ( Q-3 ) or the earlier sensor in the Q-2 , I am concerned about dynamic range in shots as I live in a very dark area of the Northern West Coast of America. I also love to do Vignette and Night Street photography in Asia. Thanks ... Chris My favorite : girl in coat on beach , pointing. Sweet . Nice to have a partner that supports your work Paul ..

Really, M10M is a pretty good choice: extraordinary sensor and the ability to choose any lens, and think about the stability of that plattform across these years. Another way is the medium fuji format in a controlled light and low iso. It offers you another dimension of textures and edit monochrom choosing the color channels. I use many leica M mount lenses in my GFX camera. In dark scenes I prefer my monochrom sensor by far. I liked your retrospective of this 2023. Congrats! I will see your next steps in instagram.
